From The Acting Principal

Dear Parents,

I am pleased to welcome Mrs Amber Demmler to our

team, taking up a recently advertised full-time office

admin position. Welcome to Mr Steve Lydster, taking up

the position of handy-man and replacing Mr Chris Snow.

We thank Chris for a wonderful couple of terms and wish

him the very best on his retirement.

Interim Term 1 Report

On Monday you would have received a brief interim

report on your child’s progress over Term 1.

I thank staff for the preparation of these brief, useful

‘snapshots’ of student progress, as an extra

communication between Aspendale Primary School

teachers and parents in addition to the reporting

requirements set down by the Education Dept.

Reflection of our Term 1

As Term 1 concludes today it’s always a great time to

reflect on what we have already achieved this year. We

kicked off our year with introductory meetings which is

a valuable opportunity to begin to develop important

links with new families and build upon strong

partnerships already formed.

Parent information evenings followed where parents

had the opportunity to come along and hear from the

leaders in our school about our curriculum including:

PYP, Literacy and Maths implementation. Another

successful ‘Night on the Green’ which gave us another

opportunity to build connections with our families and

school community.

We all felt very grateful for having had the opportunity to

spend an evening with Michael Carr-Gregg in week 6

who discussed Building Happy Resilient Kids. He was

engaging, funny and thought-provoking.

Last week we hosted Think U Know who enlightened us

all on the positives and negatives of cyber safety.

Over the term our teachers have further developed their

understanding PYP, in particular the concept-driven

curriculum as well as Professional learning each

fortnight after school. A take-away thought in particular

for our children is: Collaboration is a skill of the

future. As the world’s problems continue to become

more complex we will need people with a range of

knowledge, skills and understandings who can work

together.

We welcomed our PYP Authorisation Consultant, Ruth

Adams, to our school. Ruth has been working closely

with our school on our journey towards PYP

authorisation. She has acted as our critical friend as we

have learnt more about the many aspects of the PYP

philosophy.

Mr Tom Pearce hosted our Kingston Numeracy

Network here at Aspendale Primary school. A highlight

for the network where Tom and Sarah B presented some

of our highly successful maths initiatives.

Harmony Day was a lovely way to celebrate the diverse

origins of some of our students and teachers.

Our annual House Athletics and district swimming

events were great opportunities for our children to strive

to do their best and display their house pride. Year 4

camp to Briars enabled our students to engage in a

wonderful adventure full of activities to build confidence,

resilience and team spirit.

Hosting Gateways is quite a privilege for Aspendale PS

where Years 1 to 6 at Aspendale as well as many students

from across schools in Victoria attended the ‘Eureka

Science Alive!’ day.

We had two events where we had students raising

money to help others: Summer Van Weekly of 3M,

participated in Be Brave and Shave. She raised over

$1800. Sienna Weare, Charlotte Curry, Bridget Lennox

and Lavinia Ford also raised money for the ‘Make a Wish

Foundation’.

Kiss & Go Zone

The implementation of our new Kiss and Go

Zone. A very BIG thank you to our school

Community for your support of this new

initiative in helping to keep our children

SAFE.

Principal’s Reflections on 2017

At the School Council Annual General Meeting held on

Tuesday 20 March I presented the Education Department

‘2017 School Performance Summary’. In addition to this

I shared a ‘Principal’s Reflections on 2017’: Both

documents can be found on the school website.

As you can see from my short summary of Term 1, this is

still not exhaustive of absolutely everything we have

done! A mere snapshot of the successful planning and

implementation from all our staff, students and parents.

It’s essential we collaborate as a community and continue

to build upon our wonderful school culture.

Best wishes to all school families and staff, for a restful

holiday, and a Happy Easter period.

Regards,

Coby Larrieu

Acting Principal

Student Wellbeing Program - Parent Session

Next term we have been fortunate to have secured a place

for our Years 1 and 2 students to participate in the

Feeling Safe Together Program run by South Eastern

CASA (Centre Against Sexual Assault and Family

Violence). This program has been delivered in many

Primary Schools since the 90's and looks at protective

behaviours such as standing up for oneself and how to

seek help from a trusted adult if feeling pressured or

coerced into something that makes you feel

uncomfortable.

All our staff will be participating in an after school

session on April 23rd, and we also have a session for

parents which will be running on Wednesday April 18th,

from 1.30pm -3.30pm. Please mark this date in your

diary if you are interested in coming along, and let your

child's teacher know if you intend coming. If you have

any queries about this program please see Leanne

Peterson.

Fish Tank Wanted

The Year 4 crew were wondering if anyone in the school

had a spare fish tank that they no longer

required.

If you think you can help us, please get in

touch with Mr Gammon in the Year 4

Classrooms.

Thanks,

Jemma Dyer, 4G

Dear Aspendale Primary School Community,

It’s been a pleasure working with your staff and School Council this term and observe such a successful start to the year.

The Department of Education and Training has briefed School Council and our staff to explain the Principal appointment process. When a principal position becomes vacant, the regional director approves the timing of the advertisement of the vacancy in consultation with the school council president. It was decided the Principal Vacancy for Aspendale Primary School will be advertised on Recruitment Online in the last week of this school term, Thursday 29th March and remain open for not less than four weeks. The new Principal will begin in their substantive position from Monday 16th July, 2018. Up until then, Coby Larrieu will continue to be your Acting Principal. A selection panel has been formed to objectively assess each applicant’s skills, knowledge and capacity and to define, articulate and reach agreement about the nature of leadership required to lead Aspendale Primary School effectively. The panel hopes to conclude this process mid next term so that the new incumbent has time to prepare for their start at the beginning of Term Three. The core task of the Principal is to lead and manage ongoing efforts to improve teaching and school staff practice, school performance and ultimately outcomes for students. They have direct and profound impact on the lives of children and thus we will be working hard to ensure the right person is Principal for Aspendale Primary School. Kind regards, Jennifer McCrabb Senior Education Improvement Leader Kingston Network, Department of Education and Training

Year 4 PYP Inquiry Unit ~ “How the world works” Over the past week in Inquiry each year 4 student completed two separate experiments as a provocation to “spark” their curiosity, prior and new knowledge on how materials can undergo changes and how these changes impact on the society and the environment in which we live.

To begin with the students focused on the properties of diary cream to understand its form. Words and descriptions such as liquid, runny, milky, smooth and thin were expressed. Following this the students were required to portion the cream into a jar, insert two marbles, shake vigorously and review carefully the result. This great experiment demonstrated that the original form (liquid) can be changed into a solid (butter). To display this understanding and in line with the process of change students then created unique flow chart posters to demonstrate that man-made materials can undergo changes.

The type of jelly. Early preparation stage with materials ready.

Mixing the contents (completed by teachers). Transformation from solid, to liquid and back to solid.

In addition to the cream and butter experiment, students also investigated through another investigation the processes of change that occurs when making jelly. In essence, how jelly begins as a solid (in the form of crystals), it undergoes changes with the addition of boiling water (which the teachers poured) and with the impact of temperature controls (the fridge) it returns to a solid like state.

The provocation experiments created great enthusiasm and a strong willingness for each student to further their understanding of how materials undergo changes and that practical applications impact on the society and environment with which they live in.
