1st Tuesday of month—no meeting; 2nd, 3rd & 4th Tuesday - 6.30pm for 7pm - no meeting on the 5th Tuesday.

WHAT DID YOU GET FOR CHRISTMAS?

Because of the Club’s efforts

over 100 families in our area re-

ceived a gift this Christmas , in

some cases the only gift they

had.

We held collections at the Co-

op, Bear Cross, and at Asda, Cas-

tlepoint and we made sure the

money raised was put to good

use. The collections themselves

provide an excellent advert for

Bournemouth North Rotary

showing the public at large our

members in action in support of

our community.

This year we provided hampers to

families nominated by Homestart

and in additional we provided gifts

that were distributed at the chari-

ties Christmas party; we continued

our support for the homeless

youngsters staying at James Mi-

chael House, and ladies with their

children in the domestic violence

refuge.

So how was the money spent. The social worker at

James Michael House told us to get the things they

need but are unlikely to buy themselves, that would

apply to any teenager. So we purchased deodor-

ants, toothpaste, shampoo, pens as well as a few

luxuries like chocolate—chocolate is not a luxury

says my wife, it is an life essential! Perhaps that is

why when the presents for the Mums were pre-

pared they included a lot more chocolate, but a few

essentials sneaked in as well. The children got cud-

dles, books, pens and pencils. A lot of hard work for

Anne and her apprentice Rotar-

ian, Graham who worked tire-

lessly in the run up to Christmas

and then wisely escaped to

Spain.

But that was not all; the Club

also supported over 90 young

carers to have a treat during the

holiday.

We sent a bus load of young-

sters from Kingsleigh Junior

School to the Panto at the Pavil-

ion, they were due to meet the

cast afterwards but the show over

-ran and the school bus was wait-

ing outside so they had to skidad-

dle, but the looks of delight on the

faces of the kids as they left made

everything worthwhile ; another

group of young carers went from

Heathlands School to see Aladdin

at the Lighthouse and the feedback

from the Headmistress was fantas-

tic, not sure who enjoyed it more

the staff or the kids? And finally we

funded a group of older young carers from Muscliff

to go to the cinema.

The Club did its bit in spreading a bit a joy to those

that needed something special to help them

through a time of celebration and fun but which can

be dreadfully lonely for some.

It was chilly and hard work raising the money but

the results should give a warm glow of satisfaction

to all of our members because this is what Rotary is

about, supporting our communities and those

clearly in need.

YOUNG CHEF 2016

It is good to be able to update the Club on an organi-

sation we helped to create. In 2007 the Club do-

nated £5000 from the Marjorie Gordon bequest in

support of the then embryonic Sail Africa, set up to

introduce young people from the Townships to sail-

ing as a sport and potential career.

Last year the Charity won the Jack Cheetham Award

in South Africa, a prestigious award recognising the

work they have done. During 2016 they launched

two new initiatives , one sponsored by Pinetown Ro-

tary, a youth sailing and water safety day, and the

second, part of an international sailing charity,

‘Buoyed Up’, to provide education, inspiration and

self confidence to young people through sailing.

They are thriv-

ing. The seed

corn provided

by us and

Marjorie has

done its job.

The future of the catering trade is in good hands if the

talents of the young people taking part in the Rotary

Young Chefs competition is anything to go by.

Twelve boys and girls from throughout the area took

part in the competition hosted by the Poole and

Bournemouth College at the Escoffier Restaurant on the

Lansdown Campus.

Our Club sponsored four entrants: Naomi Smith a Y10

pupil from Bournemouth School for Girls, she prepared

a Pasta Pepperonata and Tarte Citron—it looked gor-

geous; Molly Happe also a Y10 pupil at BSG, she cooked

an Apricot Pork Tenderloin with Raspberry Tart as pud,

my mouth is watering; Ryan Gardiner who is in Y10 at

Winton Academy, his fish pie needed to be eaten imme-

diately but they sent me away, Ryan’s pudding was an

uncooked chocolate tart and finally Yasmin Mjasini, the

baby of them all, she is in Y8 at Glenmoor Academy, her

Biryani chicken and rice was full of spice and promise,

she shunned the tarts to produce a pear and ginger

pudding. All of it had the WOW factor.

Unfortunately our youngsters did not take the top

prizes, they went to Kyran Johnson from the Leaf Acad-

emy and Abbey Brockway from Lytchett. However the

Chair of the judges, a senior lecturer at the college said

the standard was amazingly high and that anyone of the

top six could have won, our young chefs clearly occu-

pied the positions 3-6.

Shorts: ‘In politics if you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman’, Margaret Thatcher. ‘Nothing is impossible for the man who does not have to do it himself’, A Weiler. ‘Arithmetic is being able to count up to 20 without having to take off your shoes’, Mickey Mouse—just for Roger! ‘Speak when you are angry– and you will make the best speech you will ever regret’, Laurence Peter. ‘Hatred paralyses life; Love releases it. Hatred confuses life; Love harmonises it. Hatred darkens life; love illumi-nates it.’ Martin Luther King JR. ‘Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up’, Thomas Edison. ‘Life is a great big canvas; throw all the paint on it you can’, Danny Kaye.

Young carers from Kingsleigh Primary getting ready for Snow White, at the Pavilion, I think they enjoyed it, here is what Glynis Page a member of staff in charge of the trip said:

Comments from the children say it all ....... "fantastic",

"amazing" and "I loved it so much".

Their faces were a picture during the performance, sing-

ing and dancing.

This is one occasion that will last in their lives for a very

long time.

We cannot thank you enough.

the results

After the competition about 40 Rotarians sat down to a

superb lunch prepared and served by the students at

the college. It was seriously good and all for £10 ph.

The restaurant is open to the public on Monday, Tues-

day, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and lunch-

times. Try it.

iously await the results

Nile 2016 it the name of a project

which has been run by the 1st Wes-

sex Scouts for some years.

The Rotary Club of Bournemouth

North has donated £5,000 in sup-

port of their efforts to build a

school in Jinger, Uganda and their

fund raising has been as successful

as their building expertise. To date

they have raised £86,000 and the school is built. The Scouts

have made several visits to the site where they saw the

fruits of their work here in the UK, and got their hands very

dirty and weary making bricks and turning them into build-

ings. They have recently invested in a machine to manufac-

ture bricks from mud, sand and concrete, this has proved to

save much labour and produce a quality product.

Interestingly when the scouts travel to Uganda they pay all

their own expenses, more fund raising required. The next

stage will be building some dormitories so the pupils do

not have to take on such long daily journeys . We wish

them well.

On Tuesday

24.01.17 Group

Leader Paul Ste-

vens; Akela

Christine Flood;

and Rover Scout

Ben Cobb visited

the Club to tell

us about the

project, their

progress, and

future plans.

After a busy Christmas period the Club is now

approaching it’s favourite day of the year. This

year May Day is on, well actually, May Day, 1st

May. Just three short months away and the

donkeys will be careering around Pelham's and

we will be having fun. Gabriel is chairing the

committee for what goes on, on the day, and

Sonia is compiling the programme which, with

its adverts contribute significantly to our prof-

its. They both need help, if you can find a stall

or an attraction for the fete please let Gabriel

know; if you can sell a page, or half a page, or

some sponsorship for the event please let Sonia

know. We have said it many times and it re-

mains true, if everyone does a little– no one has

to do a lot!

Our next cabaret night at The Village features

‘Capricorn’ , a multi faceted group with a big

reputation—07.04.17—start selling tickets NOW.

Our French twins will be with us in mid May,

Charles and Stanley are running a number of

events to finance the visit. They need the sup-

port of the whole club.

Our President will be running a Rotary Showcase

to show the World what we are about on the

25.03.17 at the University . Will be good.

NILE 2016 CLUB NEWS

The Club stormed to a famous victory over Lymington

in the first round of the team snooker. Captain Terry

Wood was amazed at the quality of play and is now

encouraging the whole team to enter the British Open

Tournament, they have agreed as long as Terry pays all

expenses, so we can forget all about that! The snooker

pairs team led by Graham Green will play New Forest

in the next round but the Foresters are showing fear,

reluctance or a lack or administrative ability as we

struggle to get them to set a date.

We are due to play Christchurch at skittles next Mon-

day at Hurn Bridge. They will be in fear.

Leader Paul Stevens; Deidre

McMullen; Rover Scout Ben Cobb

& Annette Murray.
