Introduction

The Malawi Products Handbook is compiled and published by the Malawi Export Promotion Council. Although not exhaustive the book provides detailed and up to date information on services and products manufactured in Malawi and their exporting companies, which will be useful to importers and assist both exporters and the Council when answering individual trade inquiries. It is also intended to serve as a reference for companies and individuals interested in doing business with Malawi and to showcase Malawian exporter’s high quality products and services and the export opportunities available in Malawi.

As a leading trade promotion organisation, the Council in collaboration with other business support institutions will endeavour to provide all necessary technical, timely information and advisory services to the business community to take full advantage of the opportunities. The services will include product and market development and linking Malawi producers to buyers through provision of up-to-date Business Information. Copies of the handbook are distributed through all Malawi diplomatic missions and import promotion offices abroad. For further information on export trade in Malawi, please contact the Malawi Export Promotion Council or The Ministry of Industry and Trade. Supply surveys are also undertaken to determine the capabilities of Malawi companies to supply foreign markets. The section is also responsible for the identification, preparation, monitoring and evaluation of export projects with specific reference to companies seeking to strengthen their businesses through investments in export related ventures.

(iii) Market Development and Extension Services

The Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industries The Malawi Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a voluntary membership organization which was established in 1892. It is incorporated under the Trustees Act as a non profit making organization. The primary role of the Chamber is to represent and promote the interest of the business community in Malawi. In so doing the Chamber ensures that there is a viable financial and economic environment within which industry can operate effectively, prosper and contribute to Malawi’s socio-economic development. Its membership is open to any business enterprise of any size in any sector of economic activity. The primary role of representing and promoting the interests of the business community of Malawi means that the Chamber works very closely with the Government and its various institutions including the Malawi Export Promotion Council. The Chamber is given the fullest opportunity to present the views of the business community on any matter which affects business in Malawi, including legislation. The establishment of regional economic bodies such as the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) has enhanced the Chamber’s intraregional role because the activities of these bodies have a direct effect on the interests of Malawi business. The Chamber and the Malawi Export Promotion Council work closely in promoting Malawi’s International trade. Not only does the Chamber pass on the trade enquiries from abroad to its members but it also issues, inter alia, COMESA certificates of origin, the Generalised System of Preference (GSP) certificates and the COMESA certificates Customs Transit Forms. The Chamber has a trade information library for free use by its members. It stocks trade directories from many countries, government statutes, statistical information and trade catalogues. This library ably complements the Trade Documentation Centre of the Malawi Export Promotion Council.

Malawi Investment Promotion Agency (MIPA)

Malawi Investment Promotion Agency (MIPA) is a statutory body established by the Investment Promotion Act of 1991. Its operations started in April, 1993. MIPA is the only centralised agency set up to assist investors, both local and foreign. MIPA’s Board comprises directors from both public and private sectors. This combination ensures quick response to private sector needs.

MIPA assist investors, large, small, local and international, domestic market oriented and exporters. Of particular interest to exporters are the services related to Export Processing Zone (EPZ), Manufacturing under Bond (MUB). MIPA also help exporters with the paperwork necessary to reap such benefits. The organisation also provides services and support for all investors in addition to these export-specific functions.

MIPA is an intermediary between the government and the private sector. It facilitates all aspects of the investment process which include getting permits, licenses and approvals on behalf of investors among other things. Although investors can handle their investment process on their own, it is safer and faster to let MIPA assist. This is true because government agencies are mandated by law to provide prompt response to MIPA and are accustomed to its routine and regular follow-ups.

The Malawi Bureau of Standards Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory body established by Government Legislation MBS Act, CAP. 51: 02 in 1972 giving its powers to among other things:

Formulate national standards, specifications and codes of practice. Adopt national and international standards suitable to Malawi’s

needs. Promote standardization and quality control in industry and

commerce. Establish a metrology department for the maintenance of basic

national standards and calibration of precision instruments used in industries.

Establish testing laboratories to control the quality of imports and exports.

To those who want to go into production or exporting, Malawi Bureau of Standards provides standards as well as testing and certification services. There is an Import Quality Monitoring Scheme as well as an Export Quality Control Scheme. Both of these will give importers and exporters confidence that the products they are trading in are of good quality. MBS is also a contact point of WTO on quality standards.

Malawi is bordered by Tanzania to the north and Northeast, Mozambique to the east and Southwest and Zambia to the west. According to the 2008 National Census, Malawi’s population was at 13.1 million and projected to be growing at the rate of over 2.0 percent per annum. The bedrock of the Malawi Economy is agriculture which is composed of smallholder and estate sub-sectors and accounting for 80 percent and 20 percent of the total agriculture output respectively. Although the smallholder sub-sector is mainly responsible for the production of food crops such as pulses, maize, groundnuts, the sub-sector also produces coffee, tobacco and cotton which are mainly for export market. A large percentage of tea, sugar, coffee and macadamia nuts produced in Malawi are mainly produced by the estate sub-sector particularly for the European, American and other Western markets. The agricultural sector as a whole accounts for 42.1 percent of total gross domestic product (GDP) and provides jobs to approximately 85 percent of the country’s population and the growth rate of the economy is largely dependent on the performance of this sector and contributes up to 80 percent of the export revenue. The service sector, of which tourism is the dominant sub-sector, and the manufacturing sector account for the remaining 20 percent of the country’s export revenue.

Export Procedures and Documentation

Import and Export Regulations and Procedures Malawi operates a liberal import and export licensing system under

Where an import licence is required, importers are advised to obtain such a licence prior to undertaking the importation of goods to avoid the possibilities of financial loss through having to return the goods to their suppliers in the event of failure to obtain licence. Period of Validity of Import Licence Import licences are valid for six months from the date of issue and are subject to extension in cases where such need arises, provided an adequate and acceptable explanation is given. Export Documentation Documentation in export trade is vital in that documents have to be completed before the consignment leaves the country of origin and at the destination to enable the consignee in the importing country to clear his goods through his local authorities.

Types of Documents Generally Required by an Exporter

The documents most frequently required for an export shipment are the following but the exporter should remember that they vary depending on the type of goods and market requirements. Most of the documents/forms discussed below are obtained at your bank which will advise you the details of your export documentation and exchange control requirement

a. Exchange Control – CD1 Form – Is an exchange control document/form which must be completed for all shipment of which value exceeds US$1,000. Copies are sent to the Ministry of Trade and Private Sector Development and the Reserve Bank of Malawi. The Reserve Bank will query the exporter at the end of the stated period at which payment was expected to be received to ascertain if such payment has actually been received. If not, then the Reserve Bank demands to know why the payment has not been received. This document is obtainable from the commercial banks.

b. Form 12 - All exports must be cleared through Customs by submission

of Form 12. This form is also used for clearing imports. It replaced Bill of Entry – Form 34 (for exports) and Form 21 (for imports). This form is obtainable from Malawi Revenue Authority.

c. The Commercial Invoice – The Commercial Invoice is completed to

enable the importer to clear his goods in his country. It contains the name of the exporter, weight, value and description of goods.

Page 19: 1 | The Malawi Products Handbook · entrepreneurial skills, group dynamics, functional group formation, association and cooperative development. DEMAT offers technical services and

19 | T h e M a l a w i P r o d u c t s H a n d b o o k

d. Certificate of Origin - The Certificate of origin is established in the importing country and the origin of the goods to ensure whether they are entitled to preferential duties or not.

e. GSP Form A – Malawi being a member of the ACP countries, it has to

complete the GSP Form A for all its exports to the EU in order to enjoy preferential duties including duty-free entry for most of the goods. The Certificate is issued at a fee certified by the Malawi Export Promotion Council.

f. DA 59 Certificate – Exports to the Republic of South Africa must be

accompanied by DA 59 Certificate in addition to a certificate of origin. These can be obtainable at a fee from the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

g. Form D. – The form must be completed for exports to Botswana. Available from the Malawi Revenue Authority, Customs Department, it exempts the importers from paying import duties.

h. Zimbabwe Certificate of Origin Form No. 60: Under the

Malawi/Zimbabwe trade agreement exports to Zimbabwe enjoy preferential treatment if accompanied by Zimbabwe certificate of Origin Form 60. The form must be completed and submitted to the Controller of Customs and Excise in Malawi for verification before the goods are exported to Zimbabwe.

i. Bill of Lading – When goods have been shipped by sea, the Bill of Lading is the most important document. The Air Waybill, in the case of Air Freight, is both the consignment note and the Bill of Lading.

The definition of the Bill of Lading is: i. A receipt for goods given to the exporter by the shipping company.

ii. A document of title to the goods described on it. iii. Evidence of a contract by the company to carry the goods from

the port of sailing to the destination. In countries where they have their own sea ports, the Bill of Lading is completed by the exporter himself. But in the case of Malawi, Bills of Lading have to be completed by the port agents at Nacala and Durban.

j. The Through Bill of Lading – This is a Bill of lading normally issued

by a clearing agent. The Through Bill of Lading is usually not negotiable at Customs, but counterpart port of destination.

Page 20: 1 | The Malawi Products Handbook · entrepreneurial skills, group dynamics, functional group formation, association and cooperative development. DEMAT offers technical services and

20 | T h e M a l a w i P r o d u c t s H a n d b o o k

k. The Consignment Note or Airway Bill – An Airway Bill is issued for traffic by air, just as the road or railway consignment could as well be called the Road Way Bill or Rail Way Bill respectively. Like other pre-shipping documents, a consignment note or way bill must bear a Customs stamp in order to be accepted. The carrier (e.g. Central East African Railways and Air Malawi) will not accept a consignment note or Airway Bill which is not stamped by Customs authorities.

l. Shipping Instructions – This document contains shipping instructions

from the exporter to his clearing agent (in land or at the port). m. The Certificate of Health/Sanitary Certificate - The certificate may

be required by the importing country for animal products (Health Certificate) or plants and plant products (Phytosanitary Certificate). The Health Certificate in Malawi is issued by Veterinary Department and the Phytosanitary Certificate for agricultural produce by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

n. Certificate of Fumigation – Some products require fumigation before they can be exported. Customs authorities will require this document before passing the entries in commodities such as dried fish.

o. GSP Form A/Movement Certificate – This document is also issued for export of goods to developed countries which are offering preferential treatment to developing countries under Generalised System of Preferences. It is issued in Malawi for exports to industrialised countries outside the EU and is obtainable from the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

p. Other Documents From Buyer Required By An Exporter – Apart

from the payment documents, an exporter will require the following:-

Import Permit – Trading in some products is controlled worldwide or from country to country. Items such as ivory, hides, ammunition, etc, require import permits in most countries. Import permits are required to control influx of prohibited items and drain of foreign exchange. An exporter will therefore require an import licence from his buyer to be attached to his documents for certification by Customs authorities before shipping the goods.

Q. Export Licence/Permit - Most of the goods do not require an export licence except a few whose details can be obtained from Ministry of Trade and Private Sector Development. The document is completed so that the exporter is allowed to move the goods out of the country. The purpose of this document is to control how much is exported and to where.

EXCHANGE CONTROL REGULATIONS

Exchange Control is administered by the Reserve Bank of Malawi under the powers delegated to it by the Minister of Finance in

terms of the Exchange Control Act, 1984 as well as Exchange Control (Forex Bureaux and foreign Control Fixing Sessions)

regulations, 1994. On December 7, 1995, Malawi accepted the obligations of Article V111 of the Article of Agreement of the

International Monetary Fund under which payments for current account transactions are fully liberalised.

The Minister of Trade and Private Sector Development formulates import as well as export policy and is responsible for issuing of import and export licences for selected items. Import and export licences are issued for strategic and /or security reasons only. Prescription of Currency

The Malawi currency is known as “Kwacha” (K) and is divided into 100 tambala (t) units. With effect from 7th February 1994, Malawi discontinued the pegging of the Kwacha to a basket of currencies and the Kwacha exchange rate became market determined. Payment to non residents may be made in Malawi Kwacha to the credit of a non resident account maintained by or on behalf of the receipt or in any convertible foreign currency traded in Malawi. Payments from residents of other countries may be received in Malawi Kwacha from a non resident account or in any convertible currency.

Import Orders and Import Payments

Malawi operates a liberal import and export licensing system under which only thirteen commodities require an import licence and only four require an export licence. Thus most imports are subject to the open general licence system. Import licences are usually issued within a week of application and are normally valid for six months. Authorised dealers are mandated to process import payments provided they are supported by proper importation and customs documents. Authorised dealer banks also process payments for invisibles such as freight and insurance without prior Exchange Control Approaval. Exports and Export Proceeds

Export of goods of any description whose value exceeds in aggregate, US$1,000 or the equivalent thereof in any other currency requires completion of the CD1. The form CD1 is issued by the Reserve Bank of Malawi and is only for purposes of monitoring export proceeds. Payment for the goods must be made to the exporter in Malawi within two months from the date of export. Export proceeds may be held in foreign currency denominated accounts (FCDAs), which may be maintained by regular earners of foreign exchange such as exporters. Upon receipt of export proceeds, authorised dealer banks automatically convert 60 percent, using the ruling exchange rate, into local currency and credit the remaining 40 percent to the exporter’s FCDA. The retained 40 percent may be held in an FCDA for an indefinite period. Business Private Travel and Medical Allowances

Authorised dealers may provide foreign currency for purposes of business, private travel or medical allowances. These allowances, however, subject to indicative limits of US$5,000, US$3,000 and US 4,000 respectively for business, private travel and medical allowance. Foreign exchange, in excess of the indicative limits, is granted by banks without reference to the Reserve bank of Malawi. Travellers may take out, in addition to their basic travel allowance, up to MK3, 000 in domestic currency

Payments for Invisibles

Commercial Banks are authorised to provide foreign exchange without reference to the exchange control authorities, for all current invisible payments except for private travel, business travel and medical treatment as indicated above. Foreign nationals employed in Malawi on contract and holding temporary employment permits are allowed to remit their current net earnings to their country of normal residence or any country of their choice. Proceeds from the Invisibles

Receipts from invisibles may be retained in full and held in FCDAs. There is no limit on the amount of foreign currency notes and coins that travellers may import, but they may not bring in more than MK3,000 in currency notes and coins Capital

While inward transfers of non debt creating capital are not restricted, the taking of loans from broad by residents requires prior exchange control approval, which is granted as a matter of routine. Outward transfers of capital are controlled mainly for residents and residents may not purchase foreign securities without specific exchange control approaval Non residents are permitted to repatriate their investment income, including proceeds in case of disinvestment, provided there is proof that the original investment was made with offshore funds.

SECTION FOUR

Transport

Export Routes

Despite being landlocked, Malawi is well linked with overseas and regional markets by rail, bituminised (all weather) roads and air transport. The following are Malawi’s main routes:

By rail to the port of Nacala in Mozambique By road through Mchinji to Zambia By rail through Mchinji to Chipata in Eastern Zambia By road through Mwanza, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South

Africa to the port of Durban By road through Mwanza to the port of Beira in Mozambique. By road using the Northern Corridor via Karonga and Mbeya

(Tanzania) to the port of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania. By road to the port of Quilemane in Mozambique via Muloza

boarder. By air through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe to all

major cities in the world.

Railway Services

Railway is the most important mode of transport for Malawi’s bulky imports and exports. A rail connection was first constructed between Blantyre and Beira on the Indian Ocean in 1922 and the direct railway-line was opened in 1935. Beira was the only port in Mozambique through which Malawi’s rail traffic could pass for many years. After independence in 1964, Malawi decided to build another railway link with the Lichinga/Nampula/Nacala line in Northern Mozambique. A 101 Km line from Nkaya linking the 618 Km system to Nacala at Entre Lagos, was completed and opened in August, 1971 – thus giving Malawi a second outlet to the sea. In another move to consolidate existing lines, a new railway extension was built from Salima to the new Capital City, Lilongwe, running 111 Km into the agriculture rich hinterland and was opened for traffic in

1979. This was later been extended to another 103 Km to Mchinji near the Zambian border. Zambia completed its section linking Mchinji from Chipata in 2010, giving Malawi chance to export to Zambia, Eastern DRC and the Great Lakes Region by rail through Chipata. The Government of the Republic of Zambia has plans to extend the line to connect TAZARA at Kapili Mposhi through Petauke. Rehabilitation of existing lines has continued over recent years. The fleet of locomotives has also been increased over the last few years and some older wagons have been converted into container wagons. In addition to operating the railway system, Malawi has since 1935 operated lake vessels on Lake Malawi which has potential for providing an alternative export route especially to Tanzania and northern Mozambique. The Lake is serviced by rail through the port of Chipoka in the Southern Region and was enlarged and redeveloped in 1977/78. At the moment the northern dock of Chilumba on Lake Malawi in the North is designed to provide container, fuel and break-bulk cargo handling facilities for imports and exports.

The Nacala Development Corridor

The Nacala Development Corridor region is striving to recover from nearly two decades of setbacks. Until 1982 most of Malawi’s trade passed through Nacala, but the Mozambique civil war severely disrupted its operations till the early 1990s. Forced to trade through other ports, Malawi’s transport costs increased by US$50 million a year to US$75 million, with insurance and freight costs rising from about 20% of its import bill in the early 1980s to 40% by the 1990s. The rail line was fully re-opened only in 1998, raising hopes that as much as 75% of Malawi’s international trade would soon move along the Nacala route, saving exporters up to 30% of their transportation costs. The Nacala rail line to Entre Lagos comprises two different sections. The first section of 533 kilometers between Nacala and Cuamba is in a good condition, with cargo trains travelling at a speed of 80 Km/hour and passenger trains at 100 Km/hour. The second section of 77 kilometres between Cuamba and Entre Lagos is currently under-going maintenance.

Shire – Zambezi Waterway Project

A mega transport infrastructure investment project that is now unfolding is then Shire-Zambezi Waterway Project. The project has the potential to transform Malawi tremendously through reduction in transport costs by as much as 60 percent and, hence, reducing the cost of production in industry and the economy, in general, and improve Malawi’s competitiveness internationally. Apart from Malawi, the project when fully implemented is also to benefit Zambia, Eastern DR Congo, the Great Lakes Region, parts of Zimbabwe and Mozambique to trade competitively with the rest of the world. The first phase of the Nsanje World Inland Port involving the construction of basic port infrastructure was inaugurated in October 2010 and which should allow containerized barges to dock. After completion of feasibility studies, major works on the waterway, which stretches for only 238 kilometers to Indian Ocean, would commence immediately to allow for smooth operation of the barges.

Road Service

The commercial area of Blantyre in the Southern Region is linked with over 360 Km of bituminised road to Lilongwe, the capital, situated in the Central Region which is the hub of agricultural activities. This road was further bituminised for 119 Km to Mchinji linking with Zambia to provide quicker and easier transit for goods to and from Zambia. From Lilongwe, the bituminised road goes further into the Northern Region for about 593 kilometres to link with the Northern Corridor to Tanzania. The Northern Corridor has been in operation since 1984. With the impending construction of the Karonga – Chitipa Road, it is expected that the Northern Corridor will in the near future increase its traffic to the port of Dar- Es-Salaam. Immediately after Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980 and the opening of the Mozambique/Zimbabwe border, the road from Blantyre through Tete in Mozambique to Zimbabwe became operational. This was however boosted by the reconstruction of the section between Blantyre and Mwanza to the Mozambique Border was completed in 1988. The road outlet from Blantyre to Milanje via Mulanje connects Malawi to another sea port of Quelimane on the Indian Ocean. This road also serves as an important outlet for Malawi.

Air Service

The Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, an ultra-modern facility airport, became fully operational in November 1983. The airport can handle wide-bodied jumbo aircrafts. It is designed to take up to five DC 10’s and seven Boeing 737 300’s Series and has two-level passenger terminal with a peak capacity of 500 people an hour. Air Malawi, the country’s flag carrier operates in association with other airlines including British Airways, South African Airways, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airways and Zimbabwe Airways.

2. CABLE MANUFACTURERS: an insistence on quality cables For over 10 years, Cable Manufacturers has fibred the construction industry in the country with cables of world class standards. It is indisputably a pioneer and leading manufacturer and supplier of a wide range of cables. The range includes house wiring, overhead power conductors, telephone, computer, flexible, submersible pump, bare copper conductor and armoured cables among a wide variety of products. According to General Manager Ayaaz Girach, Cable Manufacturers places particular emphasis on international quality of their products. The products are thus manufactured according to British and South African standards specifications as well as being approved by Malawi Bureau of Standards. The armoured cables, for example, use special grade property that resists fire to high temperatures, making these underground and overhead cables distinguishable from other qualities on the market. The secret is that the company “invests in research and development” and always seeks to improve the quality of the cables and the conductors the company manufacturers. The company’s high standards of performance are actually certified by an inspection panel composed of experts from major utility companies in the country. Guaranteeing the quality should be the testing and laboratory department that is kitted with modern European made testing equipment, which deals with cable temperature resistance rate and metal content, among other elements. Thus the company products ably stand the test of competition locally and internationally. “Because of our insistence on quality, we have been able to sustain competition from multi-national companies within the Southern Africa region and overseas. We have not only survived but also have grown rapidly,” says Girach. The company, which started as a small factory in 1996, has expanded to five factories within its 2.5 - acre plot at the Chirimba Industrial site in Blantyre and has virtually dominated the Malawi cable market.

Aware that quality products are often a dream and outcome of quality management, Cable Manufacturers have ensured that top personnel, staff and technical advisors consists of university graduates and professionals. This is an assurance of “excellent service all the time, every time” and comes with an added advantage to those working on Duty Free project to obtain cables vat free through ST14 terms. The company was founded by leading entrepreneurs Latif and Hanif Girach. It is currently being managed by Zakir and Ayaaz Girach, both Chartered Certified Accountants. Cable Manufacturers produced Malawi’s first stranded copper wire in 1996 and Malawi’s first aluminium conductor two years later. The company has led the industry since that time, supplying various types of cables to Malawi’s booming building and construction sector. Probably, there is no sustainable construction without Cable Manufacturers, “a company built on quality” For contacts, see address on Exporters Company Profiles.

SELECTED PRODUCTS OVERVIEW Beans and Pulses (dry beans and peas): These are important ingredient of the Malawian diet and several different types are grown most commonly as mixed varieties. However, government policy has encouraged the production of pure varieties. There are 13 different types of pulses grown in commercial volumes, the main ones being mixed beans, pigeon peas, white haricot beans, green and black grams and chick peas. Beer: Carlsberg (Mw) Brewery Ltd is the only producer of the internationally known Carlsberg Beer in Southern Africa. The company is slowly penetrating neighbouring markets with its Larger beers i.e. Carlsberg “Green” beer, Carlsberg “Brown” beer, Carlsberg “Black Stout” beer, Carlsberg “Special Brew” beer, “Kuche kuche” and now Carlsberg “Light” beer. Bus/Vehicle Assembly, Manufacturing of Truck Bodies, Trailers and

Fuel Tankers:

In addition and together with Henred Fruehauf (Malawi) Limited, they also specialise in the manufacture of Road Trailers, Fuel Tankers, Truck Bodies and Farm Trailers.

Ceramics: Malawi has great potential for pottery, which at the moment is being produced on a small scale by Paragon Ceramics in Dedza and Nkhotakota districts. The company makes a variety of teapots, mugs, vases, sugar bowls etc for both domestic and export markets. The firm, whose products are hand moulded, can produce a range of products, in accordance to customer’s requirements.

Chillies: Spices are an emergent crop in Malawi. These include chillies, turmeric, ginger, pepper, coriander, cardamom and cinnamon. Of the above, the former are leaders in production and export both the long cayenne and bird’s-eye types to South Africa and Europe.

Coffee: (coffea arabica):

Coffee is grown by both the estates and the smallholder. The crop, largely Arabic types, has been grown by the estates, since 1890. Production of high quality washed Arabica coffee is estimated to increase to 5 million kilos. This is due to increasing diversification on traditional tea estates. A member of the International Coffee Organisation, Malawi producers are aiming at doubling the output in the coming years. Major export markets are Germany, the U.S.A. and South Africa. There is scope for investment in instant coffee production.

Crocodile Skins:

Most crocodile skins in Malawi are obtained from stray wild crocodiles, which are shot by independent hunters with permission from government. However, with the listing of crocodiles as an endangered specie, some exporters of crocodile skins went into crocodile farming. Currently there are two main crocodile farms one at Dwangwa and the other one at Mangochi. The major exporter of Malawi crocodile skins is Italy. High cost of running the farm in terms of energy costs and CITES permit from the Wild Life Department are the main problems faced by the industry. Confectionery:

High quality biscuits are now made in Malawi following the commissioning of a number of biscuits manufacturing plants of which the leading is the Universal Industries Limited right in the heart of Blantyre. The company also makes toffee sweets, boiled sweets, cassava and potato crisps. However, its main line is biscuits and crisps which are packed in attractive wrapping suitable and ideal for display purposes on shelves. The company exports to the SADC / COMESA blocks.

Cotton:

Cotton is an important raw material for the textile industry. The seed is pressed into edible oils and the seed cake is feed for livestock. In 2001, Malawi produced 40,637 tonnes. Some of it is exported to South Africa and Mauritius. There is potential for investment in cotton as Malawi will be required under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to be self sufficient in cotton. Buoyed by good international prices, it is expected that production of cotton will reach 60,000 tonnes in 2011.

Cotton Piece Goods and Textiles:

Mapeto DWSM Limited is the main exporter of cotton piece goods manufactured at their factory at Makata Industrial Area in Blantyre. Most of the materials are exported to Europe and neighbouring countries. The firm makes a varied range of cotton-piece goods and polyester from java prints to high quality curtains.

Dhalls: Malawi produces a lot of pulses which cannot be absorbed by the local market only. Thus, they find their way to outside markets. Some of these like pigeon peas are processed into dhalls by some exporting companies such as Produce Commodities Import & Export, Rab Processors, HMS Foods and Grain Limited, Trans Globe Produce Exports and other companies. Major export markets include Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom, Fiji, South Africa and Zimbabwe. In a bid to stimulate its production capacity the Malawi Export Promotion Council facilitated the formation of the Dhall Millers Association.

Groundnuts: Malawi grows two types of groundnuts which are the Big Kernel (Chalimbana) and the CG7 varieties. The Big Kernel variety is suitable for the confectionery industry while the CG 7 variety is used for oil extraction. The Malawi groundnut has a particular flavour which puts it in great demand the world over. The production has seen both good and bad years but recently it has been on the plus side. The processed Tambala groundnuts fetch very good prices in export markets too. Handicrafts:

Malawi is one of the finest producers of quality, handi-crafted products in Southern Africa. For centuries, village artisans have utilised the abundant supply of natural materials to fashion utilitarian and decorative items for both the local and foreign markets. The tradition now exists side by side with an expanding, modern craft industry designed to meet the needs of collectors. Cane and similar raw materials are skilfully used to produce a wide range of baskets, containers and other woven articles. These include functional mats, hampers and linen baskets to the stronger and decorative shopping baskets. Major market destinations include South Africa and Europe.

Macadamia Nuts (macadamia spp): This is a high quality confectionery nut whose production came on stream in the late 1970s and is meeting very high demand all over the world. Production is being expanded along with other tree nuts, like cashew nuts

The crop is at present grown by estates namely, Namingomba Tea Estates, Sable Farming, Eastern Produce , Lujeri Tea Estates and Kawalazi Estates. Plans are in the pipeline for it to grown by smallholder farmers. Malawi produces Macadamia nuts on average of 10 thousand metric tonnes per year. The market prospects look bright given value adding. Currently the commodity is exported to South Africa and Europe. Mining (Uranium, Niobium and other Rare Earth Metals)

Uranium mining and exports commenced at Kayerekera in Karonga, Northern Malawi in 2008. Construction of a mine to exploit large deposits of Niobium and other rare earth metals at Kanyika in Mzimba District is at an advanced stage and full production is expected to commence in 2013. Paprika:

Paprika is a fairly new crop in Malawi and it is in high demand on the export market. The Malawi Export Promotion Council formed the Paprika Association of Malawi to enhance the production and marketing of the crop. The major market destinations of paprika are Zimbabwe, South Africa and Spain.

Precious & Semi-precious Stones:

Malawi has the potential to increase its export of precious and semi-precious stones. Its full exploitation will largely depend on investment in production and marketing which include tourmalines, rhodolite, garnet, heliodor and mineral specimens in general. There is scope to produce downstream items such as souvenirs and other tourist oriented items in order to add value, largely exported as rough stones.

Ready Made Clothing: Ready made clothing is mainly exported to neighbouring countries and United States of America under the AGOA. High quality material made in dresses, trousers and other attires have seen a growing demand from many importers who have visited the Malawi Stand at International Trade Fairs. Key companies specialising in ready made clothing include Crown Fashions Limited and Knitwear Industries Limited.

Soya Beans (glycine max): Soya beans provide protein for human and livestock. The crop can be grown under a wide range of climatic conditions but grows well in heavy soils with sufficient drainage. Currently Malawi produces in excess of 40,000 metric tonnes per year. Soya beans are currently being exported to South Africa mostly in raw

form. By-products of Soya beans are Soya meal, Soya milk and Soya oil, mostly for the domestic market. Soya beans are also used for animal feed. Soya bean based products dominate world trade in oil seeds, vegetable oils and protein meals. Among other main reason for this dominance are: favorable agronomic characteristics and high quality edible oils and protein meals yielded. The main problem faced by farmers is low producer prices, especially considering the high cost of inputs coupled with low yields per hectare.

Tea: For more than 80 years, fine and high quality tea from Malawi has been blended alongside with those from other countries to make the world’s most famous prepared drink. But now pure Malawi tea is available direct to both the consumer and the blender. Backed by expert skills and traditions developed and refined over generations, freshly plucked shoots are taken to the factory to be transferred into rich, strong tea. The leaf is weathered in troughs, rolled and fermented under carefully controlled conditions and then dried in heated air chambers. Finally, the new black tea is sorted and graded to size and thereafter tasted by expert tasters and blenders. They test and balance different qualities from the vast estates so as to ensure that the quality does not differ from the previous one.

Timber Industry:

For a long time, both public and private sectors have taken an interest in plantation investment for timber production. By about 1995, the main timber tree for construction and industry was the Mulanje cedar, local hardwood grown on Mulanje Mountain in south-eastern Malawi. With slow growth rate and limited distribution, the Malawi Government was obliged to commence investment in exotic pines. In late 1940s small plantations were established in Blantyre, Zomba, Dedza and on the Viphya Plateau in the Northern Region of Malawi. By 1974, steady investment had built up vast timber plantations covering 35,000 hectares, almost 80 per cent of this on Viphya Plateau. Malawi’s timber is exported mainly to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Tropical Live Fish:

From Karonga in the North to Mangochi the South, Lake Malawi stretches a full 568 km, with an area totalling more than 30,000 square kilometres (11,600 square miles) of fresh water. To aquarists throughout the world, it is not the beauty of this enormous lake or its magnificent surroundings that interest them but these unique fish, which have quickly become popular among enthusiasts. Unique tropical live fish roam in Lake Malawi and are a tourist attraction. Experienced divers, using specialised equipment now seek rare types of cichlids at depths well beyond those reached in early collecting operations. Moreover, with Malawi’s lake as large as it is, a complex system involving boats, team of divers, liaison vessels as well as the establishment of a fully equipped holding centre operated by Stuart M. Grant, has had to be developed to ensure that orders are promptly met. The fish are carefully inspected, sorted and acclimatised in tanks and when being exported, in an attempt to reduce stress and connect with outgoing flights to Europe or North America, a light aircraft is used for connections from the lake to Malawi’s Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe. Tobacco:

It is the main export earner of the nation accounting for about 60 per cent of the total domestic exports. Tobacco will continue to dominate the trade returns for some years to come. However, with the intensity of anti-smoking campaigns there is urgent need to diversify. The tobacco industry in Malawi is divided in two parts. The estates grow mostly flue-cured and burley while small holders grow fire-cured, sun-air cured, oriental and some burley type of tobacco. Malawi is currently a leading exporter of fire-cured tobacco, exporting to more than 60 countries. The country has four auction floors, namely Limbe (Blantyre), Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Chankhoma (Kasungu) all opening their doors to farmers as from mid March or early April.
