1. The City Hall (1 Main Square) – it is situated in the central part of the Main Square. The building was designed by Jan Peroś, the borough architect. The city hall was utterly destroyed in the fire in the year 1894. It was re-erected in the years 1895–1897 under the supervision of an architect from Cracow, Karol Knaus. The oldest city hall, built in the fourteenth century and situated where „The Gothic House” is nowadays situated, was purchased by Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki and utilized as an accommodation for the vicars of Saint Margaret’s Church, in which a collegiate was established in the year 1448. The current city hall has been rebuilt and undergone general repair works several times. The foundations of the second city hall in the city were unearthed in the year 1966.

2. The Main Square and Jagiellońska Street – Jagiellońska Street constitutes the most representative street of Nowy Sącz. It was given its name in the year 1885. Prior to the year 1908, a statue of King Ladislaus Jogaila had been set up in the street. In the year 1910, in order to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, a commemorative plaque was set up there.

3. The Royal Castle and Blacksmiths’ Bastion – an edifice erected in the place in which a small grange was situated in the period of the formal establishment of Nowy Sącz. The grange was founded by Kazimierz Wielki sometime around AD 1354. The castle constituted the north-west corner of the line of the defense walls, and its time of greatest glory came in 14th-15th century, in particular, in the times of the Jagiellonian dynasty. In the 16th century, it became the official residence of the heads of local royal administration in Sącz. After the great fire of the city in the year 1611, the rebuilding of the castle was conducted by the heads of local royal administration from the Lubomirski family. In the first half of the 19th century, barracks and military depots were situated there, and in the period of uprisings, a prison was situated in its underground parts. In the following years, the castle suffered further destruction. In the year 1938, the Museum of the Land of Sącz was opened in the chambers of the castle. On 17th January 1945, the explosion of ammunition collected in the cellars occurred, destroying the castle utterly. Only Blacksmiths’ Bastion and fragments of the walls remained intact.

4. The Gothic House, also called Canons’ House (3 Lwowska Street) – erected sometime around AD 1448, adjusted to the needs of the canons of Saint Margaret’s Collegiate (currently, a minor basilica) and used by them until the year 1791. It was erected of stone, partially buttressed, composed of two parts covered with separate roofs, pro-vided with cellars. It is a one-storey building. The portals and framings of the windows represent the Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. In the years 1958–1964, the interiors of the building were rebuilt and assigned for use as museum. The Gothic House is the main seat of the District Museum in Nowy Sącz, and also the venue of the permanent exhibition of old art from the area of the Land of Sącz and temporary exhibitions in the field of history, culture and art. The permanent exhibition: „The Old Art of the Land of Sącz” encompasses the following themes: „The Sacral Art of Guilds of 14th–19th century” , „The Royal Castle in Nowy Sącz”, „The Gallery of the Mayors of Nowy Sącz from the Turn of 19th and 20th Century”, „Folk Art since 18th until the Beginning of 20th century” and „The Court Art of 17th–19th Century”. Particular attention ought to be paid to the collection of Orthodox art from 15th–19th century with Western Lemko icons and also a bass-relief of Veit Stoss Prayer in Getsemani – a deposit from the Name of the Holiest Virgin Mary parish in Ptaszkowa (www.muzeum.sacz.pl).

5. The Gallery of Maria Ritter and Old Burgher’s Interiors (2 Rynek) – the exhibitions occupying four rooms on the first floor of the monumental burgher’s house of the Ritter family (turn of 18th and 19th century) at the junction of the Main Square and Jagiellońska Street. In the first room, the monographic exhibition of the paintings by the outstanding painter from Sącz, Maria née Ritter (1899–1976), and also the elements of the equipment of her atelier (atelier materials) can be found. The interior of the corner living room in green represents the 19th century Biedermeier; the 20th century is represented in it only by the portraits by Maria Ritterówna. The further, white, living room with a working musical box creates the ambience of old apartments. It is equipped with the light articles of furniture, utensils and also paintings, among others, by Feliks Hanusz, one of the first painters from Sącz to have received academic education. The final part of the exhibition is a bedroom in the Louis Philippe style with the Viennese portraits of the grandparents of the female painter – Feliks and Józefa Ritter. In decorat-ing the interiors, a lot of family’s memorabilia and exhibits from this burgher’s house and also other houses in Nowy Sącz were used (www.muzeum.sacz.pl).

6. The „Old Synagogue” Gallery (12 Berka Joselewicza Street) – this is an 18th century building of the syna-gogue of the commune. In terms of architecture, it belongs to the group of so-called synagogues of the nine-lateral type, with a ceiling supported by four columns in the central part of it. It was rebuilt at the turn of 19th and 20th century. In the period of the German occupation, the devastated and plundered synagogue ended up situated on the territory of the closed ghetto. In 1971, it was handed over to the Nowy Sącz museum, and, after the general repair works and adaptation with the exhibition purposes in mind, it was made avail-able for visiting in the year 1982. The permanent exhibition situated in the vestibule of the synagogue is devoted to the Jews of Sącz, whereas the main prayer room hosts the temporary exhibitions devoted to history, art and culture (www.muzeum.sacz.pl).

7. Sącz Ethnographical Park (83b B. Wieniawy-Długoszowskiego Street) – the largest museum of the open-air type in Lesser Poland, presenting the wooden architecture and traditional folk culture of the local ethnographical groups – the Lendians, Uplanders and the Highlanders of the Land of Sącz, and also of ethnic groups: Lemkos, Germans and Carpathian Gypsies. On the area of 20 ha, several tens of buildings are situated, among others: peasants’ crofts, a  17th century nobility mansion with an unique polychromy in its interiors, a grange of the mansion and also 18th century temples: a Roman-Catholic church, a Greek Orthodox church and a Protestant Church. In one of the sectors, the buildings of German colonists from Gołkowice Dolne were recreated, and on the edge of the forest a small settlement of Gypsies can be seen. The exhibition in the open-air museum presents chronological, material status-related and social differences in the scope of the folk culture of the Land of Sącz, and the familiarity with the tradition of the region is complemented by the thematic ethnographical exhibitions: „The Wedding Reception Room” and „Production of and Trade in Petroleum-derived Products by the Lemkos”. A traditional character is that of the area surrounding the crofts and also the arrangement of green areas. On the territory of the open-air museum, the cyclical and also occasional presentations of the old crafts of the countryside, the workshops of handicrafts and regional cuisine are organized; in turn, in the summer there are numerous outdoor events devoted to folklore and ethnography (www.muzeum.sacz.pl).

8. The Galician Town (226 Lwowska Street) – is the youngest sector of Sącz Ethnographical Park. It presents the small town architectural development from the end of 19th century. The western frontage of the Main Square is occupied by the city hall. The building with a slender tower and arcades is a  replica of the seat of the authorities of Old Sącz, the erecting of which was commenced at the beginning of 19th century, but which was never completed after the fire. In the neighbourhood of the city hall, two burghers’ houses from Stary Sącz are situated. In one of them, a photographic atelier and also a work-shop of a watch-maker are reconstructed, whereas in the other building a workshop of a potter can be visited. The building situated furthest to the west is a nobility mansion from Łososina Góra. This Neoclassical edifice is the reconstruction of the original building, which was utterly destroyed in the 1970s. On the ground floor, the spe-cial-purpose library of the District Museum in Nowy Sącz is situated. In the Gali-cian Town, the fire-brigade building with a characteristic turret and large wooden gates is situated; in it, fire-fighting equipment such as: vehicles, helmets, boat hooks, fire hoses and fire pumps were collected. In turn, in the houses in the Main Square, among others, a souvenir shop, an antique shop, a workshop of a craftsman producing wooden decorative items and toys, a pharmacy in the retro style, a  workshop of a  Jewish tailor, a  confectionery and a  post office are reconstructed. The smell of cinnamon and coffee attracts visitors to a  small colonial shop, and at a hairdresser’s it is possible to see how a barber used to work once upon a time. A separate exhibition is devoted to non-professional artists (sculptors and painters) from Ptaszyn. In the Gali-cian Main Square, there is also an inn, which once was the main centre of the life of the inhabitants of Orawka, and in which regional dished are served (www.muzeum.sacz.pl).

9. The Jewish Cemetery (3#2 Rybacka Street)10. Saint Margaret’s Basilica (1 Kolegiacki Square) – it is erected of ashlar

stone and bricks. This is a two-bay, four-span edifice with an elongated three-span, five-side closed presbytery. In the years 1410–1418, the chapels: the Visitation by Virgin Mary, Holy Trinity, All Saints and also Saint Ann’s Chapel, the latter under the northern tower, were erected as additions to the main building to the north of it. Prior to the year 1453, Saint Nicolaus’s Chapel had been erected. Prior to the years 1453–1472, Saint John the Almgiver’s and Saint Andrew’s Chapels had been erected. In the year 1880, the basilica underwent com-prehensive general repair works. In the years 1928–1930, another general repair works were conducted. In the years 1969–1973, the Gothic character of the temple was restored.

11. The City Park12. The Railway Stationa and the housing estate of Stara Kolonia

Kolejowa (15 Kolejowa Street) – the railway station was erected in the year 1878, and, subsequently, it was rebuilt as a  stone-made one in the years 1908 – 1909 with a Secession interior. In the 1980s, the railway station was modernized, and, therefore, it was deprived of its previous character.
