Classed as the 4th Revolution, there is a growing trend in UK manufacturing to combine automation with cyber-physical systems and the Internet of Things to create smart machines which support increased productivity. Continual Improvement

At Georg UK we are seeing an increase in the number of enquiries to build smart machines that connect to the Cloud. Classed as the 4th Revolution, there is a growing trend in UK manufacturing to combine automation with cyber-physical systems and the Internet of Things to create smart machines which support increased productivity.

Adding sensors and RFID chips to Georg machines facilitates the collection of data which can be used to:

• Monitor maintenance and repairs to estimate when a component needs replacing. This is called Preventative Maintenance;

• Scrutinise the speed of machines to minimise ‘idle time’ to help improve efficiency;

• Track energy flows such as peaks & lows to help reduce energy costs;

• Identify quality issues to reduce faulty production outputs;

• Issue alerts to improve the safety of machine operatives.

Neil Wyke, managing director of Georg UK, explains: “Companies want longer life and increased productivity from the machines that they invest in. New Georg machines are Industry 4.0 intelligent offering a range of benefits and supporting real-time decision making. Self-monitoring and reporting critical signs of potential defects before they happen is crucial given the demise of the traditional maintenance departments.”

To keep ahead of the competition and reap the rewards from introducing Industry 4.0 machines in your factory, call the Georg Team on 01902 715110.

Andrew Logie, Head of Georg UK’s Service, Spares & Repairs Division discusses how Preventative Maintenance can reduce costly breakdowns.

Over recent years we have seen UK industry change dramatically in terms of traditional maintenance teams. The workforce has changed following a decline in people entering the engineering sector which means all the skills and knowledge traditionally held within a company is being lost as these experienced employees retire with

no-one to bridge the skills gap. Bearings, gearboxes and motors are no longer manufactured in the UK and, with Brexit looming, the timescale to obtain these replacement parts will be even longer.

At Georg UK we believe that if machines are not maintained regularly to optimise performance and minimise breakdowns, the resulting downtime to undertake repairs and install replacement parts could be devastating for a company.

Preventative Maintenance is Key2

We offer a number of solutions to this problem

Retrofit machines:

The introduction of technology, and specifically the monitoring that can be achieved through remote sensors, enables potential issues to be identified well in advance of a problem occurring.

Companies are starting to make the transition to modernising their factories making them smart and Industry 4.0. But it’s not only new machines that can be Industry 4.0 enabled, we can retrofit existing machines with the same technology and we can also upgrade machines installing new electronics, new hydraulics etc.

PPM Scheme:

Our Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) Scheme helps our customers schedule planned maintenance to ensure safety is maintained for their workforce and to reduce breakdowns. The PPM Schemes are specific to each machine and outline best practice levels and frequency of maintenance.

Servicing Team:

At Georg UK our team of experienced engineers can undertake planned maintenance on behalf of customers if additional resources are required. We also have the skills to manufacture and source custom-built spares if needed, for Georg or other OEM machines.

Recently, we’ve been reassuring customers that the UK’s exit from the European Union on 29 March is expected to have minimal impact on our operations which we foresee will continue as usual.

At Georg UK we manufacture all of our machines in Wolverhampton, in the heart of the Black Country where there remains a hub of small fabrication and engineering companies. We fabricate any bespoke components in-house or use local specialist suppliers.

Georg UK will remain compliant with all existing ISO quality processes as well as existing machinery safety standards and will update these as new standards are introduced post-Brexit.

A long term project to update a customer’s slitting line to improve quality and productivity continues to be delivered at a pace with phased installations and on-site works planned during key factory shutdown.

Phase 2, which saw the installation of a new slitter machine into an existing line during their Christmas closure, will help to improve the quality of the material being slit, enable thicker gauge and higher strength materials to be processed and reduce operator tool change-over times.

We are now working on Phase 3 which focuses on rewind and coil handling machinery which will be installed over Easter. We are also building a scrap chopper, the first automated machine of this type in the UK, which we will deliver as part of Phase 4 and is scheduled to be installed over Christmas 2019.

Refurbished Machines

We are delighted to announce that the transformation of a “stock” line is now fully underway, and the machines are being refurbished, cleaned and painted in readiness for installation with a new customer later this year. The line will undergo a comprehensive overhaul and testing programme together with a brand-new state of the art control and safety system to Performance Level 3. New operating features will allow operators to set the machine quickly and safely together

with other features which will accurately control the processing of surface sensitive materials. We look forward to presenting a modern, safe and reliable line which will improve levels of quality and productivity for our customer.

Customer Feedback

A valued customer recently expressed their thanks when we carried out the refurbishment of the crank shaft bronze bushes to bring their shear back to full working condition. Here’s what they said:

Keep up to date with us:

Our BS EN ISO 9001:2015 quality management system has recently been audited and we successfully passed, again! Well done to the team for their continued commitment to ensuring we remain quality focussed.

In our last issue we talked about reconnecting with our core business values, reorganising our engineering teams and ensuring that each head of division (who are all engineers at heart) have a lead role throughout all aspects from the sales phase through to end delivery. Feedback from customers has been positive as they directly benefit

from improved consistency and continuity during all stages of a project.

Furthermore, we have streamlined how we manage and deliver the electrical element of our machinery builds. We are happy to partner with your preferred supplier or continue to manage electronics in-house or through our own expert contractors (selected depending on the application), to ensure that we deliver the best possible electronics solution for our customers.
