Learning Goal 12
• I will be able to:– Cite examples of problems workers faced during the
Progressive Era (children’s employment, long hours, low wages, injuries on the job, company towns, scrip)
– Explain the solutions that were attempted– Summarize the response of the US Supreme Court to
worker’s rights laws and how it affected union membership

Square Deal
Working conditions
Unions
• Kids under 15 worked in factories, mills, mines• Child labor & minimum wage laws = ruled unconstitutional
b/c SC said not gov’ts job to regulate wages; if wages too low, pple should choose not to work there, but ALL paid low
• Company towns; had to live there, paid in scrip instead of real money, lasted until 1950s
• T. Roosevelt, balance needs of business, workers, & people– 1902 Coal Miner’s strike, pple w/o coal for winter, TR
encouraged arbitration or letting 3rd party decide; 1st time gov’t stepped in to help workers
– 1st to use Sherman Anti-Trust Act to break monopoly– Conservation = national parks and forests
• 1911, Triangle Shirtwaist fire – 146 women killed b/c management locked them in
• Worker’s compensation initiated - $ if hurt on the job• SC continued to rule against workers, union membership up
to help b/c gov’t wouldn’t
