  • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

What is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

The term PAT generally refers to in-service inspection and testing of portable appliances. i.e printers, hoists chargers, TV's and radios.    PAT testing is essentially a repeat of the electrical safety tests that were carried out at the time the product was manufactured.

Each appliance is given a visual inspection to see if the plug, cable or the appliance is damaged in any way making it unsafe.  The fuse rating is also checked.

The appliance serial number and result of the fuse test, type and location are entered into the system.  A multiple of tests are them automatically carried out which include the polarity, earth continuity,  insulation resistance, earth leakage and operational test.  Once these tests are completed the analyser will either PASS or FAIL.

    Procedure

"It is a periodic in-service electrical safety inspection and test to ensure that the electrical safety of the appliance is not compromised while the equipment is in service"

Following the completion of the PAT Testing of all the appliances, the stored appliance data is uploaded to our system. Once the information has been uploaded, the following reports are provided to the customer.

    Why PAT?

All employers have a duty of care to ensure that their electrical appliance do not post threat to the heath and safety of employees, customers and the public who my come in to contact with those appliances.   This requirement is now covered by legislation effective from November 2007.  This is the general application regulation covering the new legislation under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act.

Appliance Register: A list of all equipment tested.

Pass & Fail Certificates: A list of equipment that have either passed or failed.

Display Certificate: A certificate to display to advise that the appliances on the premises have been tested for electrical safety.

Planned Maintenance. Of course from time to time things can and do go wrong and it’s how you react that counts. A prompt and effective response is essential and will ensure that the impact on service and customer experience

is kept to an absolute minimum.

    Reactive Maintenance

In any multi-site organisation and even with the most thorough programme of Planned Maintenance in place, unforeseen problems can and do occur.  These can range from relatively minor faults, a light failing from its fitting to more serious issues, we can ensure downtime is kept to an absolute minimum.
