SI Elements:

• Courses – historically difficult courses• SI Leader – passed course with an ‘A’ – paid for attending all classes with current class – does not re-lecture – leads/facilitates discussion – shares study strategies – viewed as a peer• Sessions – ‘ two’ one hour sessions per wk – planned around students• Session – group participation• Participant – attended at least one SI session – attendance is voluntary

Key Findings & Next Steps:

• Math 50, Math 51, and Math 90 – SI effective form of academic support.• Math 96 –up side down results (3rd semester at MVC and 1st semester at SJC)

• Next step: – BSI funds will no longer support M96 at MVC. – BSI funds will attempt one more semester of support for M96 at SJC.– We are researching possible causes of the up-side-down results.

• Hypothesis – i.e. possibility due to under-prepared M90 entering M96 • - “test preppers” (1 to 4 sessions attendees) make up 50% of the SI participants

• Increases success rate (77% successful completion rate for SI participants vs. 48% for non-participants. )

• Selection of courses are data based driven -- BSI funded - 3 classes (math 50,51,96) as a result SI courses will be offered in other identified difficult subjects for basic skills students:

history (FA’08,SP09, FA’09) psychology (FA’08,SP09, FA’09) Spanish (SP’09,FA’09)

Fall 2010 BSI funds are supporting M50, M90, M90 at MVC and M50, M51, M90, M96 at SJC

• SI growth sources: funding (not a replacement for tutoring) availability of SI leaders (trained & experienced) seasoned SI coordinator (trained, experienced & dedicated champion)
