1 SAMUEL 13 – SUMMARY
Chapter 13 of first Samuel begins with Saul’s first couple years as ruler of Israel.
He recruited three thousand men, two thousand stayed with him, the other thousand stayed
under his first son’s supervision, Jonathan.
Israel prepared for a war against the Philistines, but the Philistines were high in number and
it scared the Hebrews.
Saul was waiting for Samuel to show up to give direction, but since Samuel was late, Saul took matters into his own hands.
Saul took the burnt offering and offered it. Obviously this isn’t his job to do; and after he did it
Samuel shows up. Samuel asks Saul what has he done? Saul tells Samuel he took too long to
come to the battle, so he sacrificed to God since his army was a bit intimidated.
Samuel tells Saul that action just cost him the kingdom forever and that God has already
sought someone who will think after the Lord’s heart.
The chapter ends with Israel sharpening their swords for the day of battle.
1 SAMUEL 14 - SUMMARY
Chapter 14 starts with Jonathan, the son of Saul, who led his arm bearer to spy
against the Philistine army. He did this without his father’s knowledge. Now,
Jonathan had a great deal of faith in the God of Israel, especially as it pertained to
war.
Jonathan made signs that he’d communicated with the LORD. This is how he was
able to have success, especially in this particular battle with the Philistines.
Meanwhile back at the camp, Saul and company realized Jonathan and his arm
bearer were not present, and they’d heard the noise of battle with the Philistines. The
Philistines were being destroyed and Saul called a fast as they battled continued.
Jonathan didn’t hear about the fast & ate some honey and later on, he wished Saul
didn’t call a fast because the mere taste of honey gave him much more energy to
fight.
1 SAMUEL 14 - SUMMARY
The son of Saul believed if the entire company ate they would have destroyed more
Philistines completely. Saul was going to have his son killed because of the vow, but
the people said Jonathan was the very reason they were beating the Philistines. God
was working through Jonathan, so Jonathan was preserved. Saul took the kingdom
and fought against all his enemies and prevailed for Israel.
Before the chapter closes, we are told the story of Saul’s interesting acts and
achievements and are given an account of those in his family. Saul began recruiting
any strong and valiant man to become a part of his army.
The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua; and the names of his two
daughters were these: the name of the firstborn was Merab, and the name of the
younger, Michal. 50 The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz.
And the name of the commander of his army was Abner son of Ner, Saul’s
uncle; 51 Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of
Abiel.
1 SAMUEL 15- SUMMARYChapter 15 begins with the prophet Samuel giving king Saul a message from God to
destroy ALL the people of Amalek. God wanted them all utterly destroyed, man woman,
infant, suckling child, and all their animals also.
Saul gathered his footmen, 200,000 and 10,000 from Judah and he ordered the Kenites
to get from among the Amalekites or they’d be destroyed along with them. Saul
destroyed the Amalekites, except he left their king, Agag, alive, and he kept the best of
the sheep and oxen the Amalekites had.
When Samuel the prophet came upon Saul and his work, he was disappointed. The
Lord spoke to Samuel expressing how He wish He didn’t make Saul king over His
people because Saul cannot listen and do as he is commanded.
The Noise of Sheep and AnimalsSamuel was sad about this and prayed the Lord give Saul another shot. When Saul was
confronted on the mission, he believed he had done the commandment of the Lord but
Samuel set him straight saying, if you did the Lord’s command, “I wouldn’t hear the noise of sheep and animals.”
1 SAMUEL 15- SUMMARYSaul continued to defend himself that he did what the Lord commanded. Then Samuel gave
the words that are quoted so often in churches today; he said, “To obey is better than
sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”
Samuel tells Saul (and us) that rebellion is like the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is like
sin and idol worship.
The Prophet Got Violent
He probably had people whining and crying that he should keep the animals alive. Samuel
left Saul that day, because he knew the Strength of Israel had left Saul.
The chapter ends with Saul begging for another chance, but there is no point in hanging out
with a person God has left. However, Samuel stayed with him, but he knew it was over as it
pertains to the Lord keeping the kingdom with Saul.
After they went home, Samuel didn’t come to see Saul anymore until he died, but Samuel
did mourn for Saul, and God was sorry that he made Saul, king of Israel
