The Committee recommended strongly to start the energy recovery immediately after the completion of Phase 1.

Phase 2 Project

Phase 2 Items– Neutron equipments, Muon equipments, Hadron hall expansion, Energy boost

to 50 GeV.– The total cost of about 130-140 Oku Yen was discussed.– The committee is favorable to proceed into the Phase 2 by assigning an explicit

priority among the proposed items.– Priority setting must be done by the discussions among the communities.

The first discussions were held at the Users Consultative Committee on June 18.

– The nuclear transmutation: The review must be done at the Atomic Energy Commission in Japan.

A positive discussion was done at the Atomic Energy Commission meeting on July 3.

2 km Detector for T2K– The 2 km detector for T2K was not included in Phase 2 items in the present

review.– I recommend this detector be proposed (if the PAC supports it) to the

Government after the first data are taken by the present configuration of T2K.

33

Hadron Experimental Hall

K0 and K1.1– Scientific evaluation is needed.– Desired scenario is shown on the next page.– Would like to encourage to have both of K0 an K1.1 beamlines, but we

have to wait for the budget status.– Close to 3 Oku Yen was requested next year. Obtaining an enough budget

for JFY2008 is particularly very difficult.

Phase 2 Project (expansion of the Hadron Hall as Phase 2)– 60m to 100 m. One production target to two production target, etc.– The cost would be about 59 Oku Yen. – Need input from PAC.– Would like to send a proposal for JFY2009, if this proposal is endorsed by

the communities and, at the same time, approved by many committees at the J-PARC, such as the J-PARC Council.

– Competition exists within Phase 2: Neutron, Muon. Other competition within the J-PARC: Neutrino 2 km.

Competition outside J-PARC: Many new projects are lined up.

Office Space, Lodging, New Gate, etc.

Office Space– NTT: Ibaraki Prefecture will purchase i

t. KEK (plus JAEA) will rent and/or purchase a part of the space. A few 100 can be accommodated.

– This area will be used for the Users Office.

New Lodging– 30 rooms with kitchens plus 16 room

s exist. We are negotiating with JAEA to be available to J-PARC.

– Hotel plan near the Tokai Station. Gate

– New Gate will be planned for the J-PARC.

Summary

News during the Past One Year– Construction for both equipments and facilities: A slight delay, but

almost on schedule. Peak in the construction budget in JFY2006。

– J-PARC Center started and expanded.– Shutdown of KEK-PS from JFY2006.

Review by the Governmental Committee on J-PARC– How to grow the organizational structure at the operational stage (J-

PARC Center)?– Realistic operational budget. – Installation of PAC within J-PARC, Free beamtime charge, etc.– Linac energy recovery has to be done. Phase 2 is encouraged.– Mechanisms for an easier industrial usage have to be introduced. – Internationalization of the J-PARC Project.

Hadron Hall– Timing of K0 and K1.1: Depends of the budget.– Phase 2 expansion: Evaluation will be needed at the next PAC.
