Journal Platform (Journal Platform (Taylor and Francis Taylor and Francis On-line )On-line )
We always try to learn from those with more experience. For this reason, we analyse how journals are issued by renowned and acknowledged publishers. One of them would be Taylor and Francis. VGTU publishes twelve journals in co-operation with this publisher.

SAGE open SAGE open is a new open access publication from SAGEis a new open access publication from SAGE
E. g., SAGE open launched this July, has an option for readers and the academic community at large to continue the peer review process after online publication.
Let’s learn from more experienced colleagues and try implementing additional technological innovations into systems of our journals.
Open Journal System - free online workshop, EIFL, Open Access week, 26st October 2011
http://sgo.sagepub.com/
I gave an argument to penny-pinching Lithuanian editors that all innovations can be implemented in OJS. It will not have endless HighWire platform possibilities, but why shouldn’t we start with more simple things?

A Sample of Journals Using Open Journal SystemsA Sample of Journals Using Open Journal Systems
Before starting with OJS, we looked at the list of journals on the PKP website to find out what journals and how OJS is used in their publishing.

Open Journal Systems Open Journal Systems Advantages and Their FeaturesAdvantages and Their Features
1. OJS is implemented and controlled locally (an institution manages the system at its own accord).
2. Editors set their requirements, sections, review processes and other issues.
3. All journal publishing processes take place directly on-line (content is submitted and managed on the Internet).
4. If one of the participants retires, nothing is lost because all content is on the system.
5. There is a possibility of postponing Open Access by setting embargo period.
6. Search engines index all the system’s content.
7. Notices by email and possibility of commenting for readers.
8. Full help on the Internet.
9. The system has an open code: it is possible to improve the system at the institution.
10. Easily customized design.
We agree with all the advantages and features of OJS listed on the PKP website.

Comparison of real Comparison of real OJS OJS Installation Installation in LTin LT and suggestions and suggestions (1)(1)
1. Leave caption “Open Journal Systems“ in English in
the menu on the right in all versions of the journal
system (this shows an academic status of a journal,
however when translated into Lithuanian it becomes
non-informative)
2. The website of a journal should be bilingual if it is
published in Lithuanian or other languages than
English (there is a great possibility of installing as
many languages as a journal needs)
3. The main page should be in English (due to foreign
users and journal dissemination in the world who may
fail to find the button changing the language into
English)
4. To include logos indicating the belonging to important
institution (association, organisation, etc.) or usage of
innovative technologies in journal publishing

Comparison of real Comparison of real OJS OJS InstallationsInstallations in LT in LT and suggestions and suggestions (2)(2)
1. We changed the top menu because we thought that the standard menu was too complicated.
2. The top menu can be structured in various ways, depending on the attitude of the editorial board on some captions (translation to Lithuanian or other languages should correspond with English)
3. Information about the editorial board and its structure as well as requirements for authors should be easy to find (the most important information about research journals)
4. The main page (HOME) should indicate aims of a journal, its subject areas, databases (information according to which authors choose a journal)

Our Our SuggestionSuggestionss for for OJS OJS Installation (Installation (11))
Information about a journal should be laconic (no more than 5 – 6 sentences) and eye-catching to
attract authors
We suggested making slight changes to the standard HOME page so that the title page contained the main information about the journal, which usually determines the author’s decision whether to submit his/her manuscript. Among the main information there should be: ISSN numbers, i.e. journal indicators at the top so that we did not have to search; Aims and Scope in five sophisticated sentences; Abstract and Indexing – to show how many databases have acknowledged the scientific quality of the journal. Moreover, this information shows if the editorial board takes care about the promotion of articles, who should be contacted and how the manuscript should be submitted. All other information would be available in other pages.

Separate OJS system should be implemented for each
journal because:
1.Personalized internet addresses, having journal initiatives
and so on, can be allocated: http://www.btp.vgtu.lt;
http://sm-hs.eu; http://www.statisticsjournal.lt
2.It is better for search engines (IT specialist
recommendation).
3.Different journals have different editorial boards and other
authors so the user list would be overloaded. There is a
possibility, however, of registering using the same data on
the system of the other journal.
4.Different system used for different journal does not
overload the system so much, thus it works more speedily
(IT specialist recommendation).
5.All journals of an institution can have different looks,
however, if chosen appropriate colours, they can have a
common style adapted to an institution.

CrossRef CrossRef IndicatorsIndicators
I will be glad if these numbers look familiar to you as this means that your organisation is a member of CrossRef.
If this is the first time you hear about CrossRef, I suggest watching a short video. You can find it at http://www.crossref.org/CrossRefAnimation.html
Open Journal System - free online workshop, EIFL, Open Access week, 26st October 2011
CrossRef created the most advanced innovations for journal publishing. This is the reason we chose them for our journals.
![Page 15: 1 Open Journal System - free online workshop Open Journal System - free online workshop, EIFL, Open Access week,26 st October 2011 Use of Open Journal.](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022051400/55149b61550346b2598b5858/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
15
CrossRef - Digital Object IdentifierCrossRef - Digital Object Identifier
1. Digital Object Identifier (DOI) ensures a constant access to an article, book or other publications (a publisher is responsible for declaring a correct URL address)
2. If a publisher, librarian or others use the following link: http://dx.doi.org/10.XXXX/xxxxto a publication in databases, catalogues and other sources, a publication will always be available (CrossRef ensures that this link is active and working)
3. DOI generation projected by Open Journal Systems (however this possibility should be developed)
4. DOI metadata helps to identify who cites an article (Cited by Linking service) if a publisher registers an XML file with publications on the reference list.

CrossRef CrossRef PossibilitiesPossibilities
Cited-by is used by different journals.
VGTU programmer wrote a script for Cited-by which was implemented into OJS used by VGTU journals. Now this script can be used by everyone.
Please note that Cited-by only functions within CrossRef and shows citations taken from journals that also provide DOI numbers and XML files with reference lists. This means that the more publishers provide exhaustively described DOI, the more effective this service will be.

VGTU support for CrossMark initiative seemed to be something fantastic for us when we used simple journal websites. We, however, also need to improve and expand this for other VGTU journals yet.

Conclusions for Conclusions for Using OJS in JUsing OJS in Journal ournal PPublishublishingingHaving implemented eight Open Journal Systems, I can say it is easy to do that. All you need is:
1. Big willingness and being sure that everything is possible to implement in OJS.
2. Using non-standard OJS, you will also need some help of a young and creative IT specialist who can take part in PKP forums and get feedback from peers from around the world.
Aiming to be visible, easily found and acknowledged by the worldwide academic society, all research journals should implement not only Open Journal Systems to manage journal content and have professional Open Access, but also register articles’ DOI, use CrossCheck to check manuscripts, Cited by Linking widget, and other latest technologies designed for journal publishing.
