Langone Part-time MBA Online Chat
Tuesday, April 26, 2011
6:00 – 7:00 p.m. EDT
CCWP_Michael Hello. My name is Michael. I work in the Career Center for
Working Professionals (CCWP). I am happy to address your career-related questions.
Admissions_Maggie Hi, my name is Maggie. I currently work in the MBA Admissions
Office and am looking forward to answering your questions!
Langone_Student_Dean My name is Dean, and I'm in the Langone Program at Stern's
Manhattan campus. My background is in Pharmaceutical Sales, and I will be working at Pfizer
this summer doing Corporate Finance. I'm very active with various clubs at Stern.
Langone_Student_Marcia Hi my name is Marcia. I started in the Langone program in Fall '09
in Westchester. My specializations are Luxury Marketing / Strategy / Leadership & Change
Management. I'm self employed in qualitative marketing research and am also involved with
student government here at Stern and belong to several clubs.
Admissions_Stefanie Hello everyone and welcome to the Langone Program chat! My
name is Stefanie, and I have been a member of the Admissions Committee for about five years. I
am happy to answer any and all admissions-related questions!
Langone_Student_Divya Hi, my name is Divya, and I'm a current Langone student. I started
in Fall 2010 (yes, the application process is still fresh in my mind!) I'm also on the Part Time
Leadership Forum Executive Board (PTLF). I work in the Pharma Industry, and my
specializations are Strategy, Finance and Leadership & Change Management.
Langone_Student_Marci Hi everyone - my name is Marci. I started the Part-time program in
Fall 2010. I currently work in the Media & Entertainment industry for HBO in the IT
Compliance group.
matthewsays Will requesting multiple campus locations (i.e. - Weeknights or
Weekends) improve my chances of acceptance?
Admissions_Stefanie It is always best to be as flexible as possible, but do not select a
campus location on your application that you would not want to or be able to actually enroll in if
admitted. Remember that you must remain in the location to which you are admitted for one year
before you are able to possibly switch, on a space-available basis.
Philipginzburg About three weeks ago, I submitted my application as a part-time
student. When will I receive my password for my application status?
2
Admissions_Stefanie The Admissions Committee does not begin reviewing applications
until after the deadline. You will receive an email acknowledging receipt of your application and
providing you with login information to the Application Status Check Website within about 10
days following May 15.
Rozza Hi, here's a question: I have an undergrad degree from a UK
university and my overall grade is a 2.1. How do I do a GPA conversion? Do I need to?
Admissions_Stefanie You do not need to convert your GPA to an American 4.0 scale.
The Admissions Committee is trained to review your undergraduate transcript as is.
Matthewsays Are all courses offered in both Weekend and Weeknight options on
the Manhattan campus?
Langone_Student_Marcia All core courses are, as well as many electives. However, if you
only want to take classes on weekends, your specializations are limited to finance and
management. As a weekend student, you can supplement your schedule with some weeknight
courses if you’d like to do different specializations though.
Divining I was a liberal arts major undergrad and the only business related
course I've taken is an intro to financial accounting course after college.
Langone_Student_Marci Not a problem! There are many students in the program who didn’t
take any undergraduate business courses, and they are handling the program just fine. In certain
core courses, you may find yourself studying a bit more than someone who has taken that course
in undergrad, but overall, the core classes are designed for beginners with little to no exposure to
the content.
Matthewsays Are interviews mandated or requested for part-time applicants?
Admissions_Stefanie Interviews are not required for all part-time applicants. The
admissions committee requests to interview a small portion of part-time applicants to clarify
aspects of the application. It is possible to be admitted to the part-time program without an
interview.
l.w.lebron Is there a program for finance or accounting available online for
prospective students?
Langone_Student_Marci Stern does not offer online courses.
John_V._Romano If we choose to specialize in more than one area, will only one
specialization show on the Diploma?
CCWP_Michael Specializations do not appear on the Diploma. Students typically
list any specializations on their resumes.
3
pb_parttime I may not be able to take GMAT before May 15th, so I wanted to
know if it’s ok to complete rest of the application by May 15th and then submit my GMAT
scores after the 15th
?
Admissions_Stefanie It is possible to submit your application for the May 15 deadline
and include the date on which you intend to take the GMAT in Essay 4. Please note, however,
that if your application is not complete by the May 15 deadline, the Admissions Committee
cannot guarantee that you will receive notification of your admissions decision by August 1
(though it is still possible that you may receive one by this date).
Aisling Hi, what is the average time it takes most students finish their
MBA (2, 3yrs)?
CCWP_Michael Most students finish within 3 years, although some will accelerate
their program while others will extend it.
Damion Say you’re accepted into the part time program, but want to change
to full time. Is this possible?
Langone_Student_Marcia You cannot switch from the Part-time to the Full-time program.
JoeOrt Hi Marci - what is your expected finish date?
Langone_Student_Marci I am expected to finish in summer 2013. I plan to take 3 years to
finish the program (it is 60 credits).
Susan Hi Stefanie - when will applicants for Fall 2011 start hearing back?
Admissions_Stefanie The Admissions Committee reviews applications on an ongoing
basis following the May 15 deadline. We will not begin to review applications until after that
date, so applicants who apply by the deadline will hear back sometime between late May and
August 1.
Matthewsays Are there any media-related clubs for Stern students, or
possible crossover groups with Tisch students to bridge the Business and Media industries?
Langone_Student_Divya Stern offers an Entertainment, Media & Technology specialization.
There is also a student club called MESA (Media, Entertainment & Sports Association) and a
student club called TANG (Technology & New Media Group). You are also allowed to take 25%
of your Stern coursework at other NYU programs, including Tisch.
Jennifer I would love to hear about the structure of the program. Is there
much flexibility in the schedule or number of courses students can take?
Langone_Student_Dean Students initially enroll in Manhattan-weeknights, Manhattan-
weekends, or Westchester-weeknights. After taking courses in your initial program during the
4
first 2 semesters, students can take courses in the other programs if there is space. Many students
decide to do this. In terms of the number of classes, part-timers usually take 2 at a time, although
you can take up to 3 classes a semester. There are also "intensive" semesters between
summer/fall and fall/spring when you can take another class. There are 33 required credits, and
the rest are electives.
l.w.lebron Where can I find your requirements, & are there certain things that
I should strongly pay attention too that will increase my chances of being accepted?
Admissions_Stefanie Application requirements for the Part-time program can be found
on our website:
http://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicPrograms/PartTime/Admissions/ApplicationInstructions/ind
ex.htm
imyers712 Can a Langone student take daytime classess?
Langone_Student_Marcia Langone students can take daytime classes, but full time students
get first priority, so it is on a space available basis. Similarly, full-time students can take evening
electives, but part-time students get first priority for these.
Andrey_Z At which point in the application process do the undergrad
transcripts have to be mailed to the admissions office?
Admissions_Maggie You should postmark all transcripts by the May 15th
application
deadline.
Divining What kind of coursework prerequisites do you look for in
candidates?
Admissions_Stefanie There are no prerequisite courses needed to apply for the Part-time
MBA program; however, an undergraduate degree is required. You will find our Selection
Criteria helpful:
http://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicPrograms/PartTime/Admissions/SelectionCriteria/index.htm
kingcheng What are GRE and GMAT requirements?
Admissions_Stefanie There are no minimum standardized test scores required to apply.
You will find more information on our standardized test guidelines here:
http://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicPrograms/PartTime/Admissions/ApplicationInstructions/GM
ATGREAndTOEFL/index.htm
Ehaque Hello, I am recent graduate student from CUNY, majored in
architecture technology, and I was wondering whether I am eligible to enroll in the MBA.
Admissions_Stefanie There are no specific majors or courses required to apply to the
Part-time MBA program. An undergraduate degree is required.
5
Pthopeful What is the difference between the career service opportunities for
part-time and full-time students?
CCWP_Michael Part-time students have a dedicated career office that conducts
resume reviews, mock interviews, and other counseling appointments with them. We also have a
professional development program similar to that of the Full-time MBA program.
Elias For any student who is self-financing their MBA: How confident
are you in the ROI you expect from your Langone MBA?
Langone_Student_Dean That's going to vary for each student, but I can tell you my
experience. I am changing job functions from sales to finance, and I was able to get an internship
offer from Pfizer. The annualized base salary for this job is 96K vs. 62K at my last job. For me,
that's a great return. Also, even if you only take 2 classes per semester (which is the norm),
domestic students can get student loans at really low interest rates.
stern2011 Hi, what’s the Stern MBA biggest advantage compared to other
leading universities?
Langone_Student_Divya The biggest advantage is that it is extremely flexible. You're in
NYC - the financial capital. Also, the caliber of the professors and students is impressive.
Prospectvemba When is the next application cycle after May 15th?
Admissions_Maggie We annually offer two application deadlines for Part-time
applications: May 15th to begin in September, and September 15th to begin in January.
DrewK What type jobs are best suited for this part time program? I am
currently a consultant for a big 4 firm and tend to travel. Are the teachers flexible?
CCWP_Michael Attendance at class is an expectation of professors and is typically
factored into your grade. We offer a weekend option for students who travel during the week,
which is popular among students with significant weekday work travel.
Prospectvemba Hi. How much prior work experience must one have for the MBA
part-time program?
Langone_Student_Marcia Hi. In my class there are students with as little as two years and as
many as twenty, so it really varies.
Anuk The MBA program involves group projects with a team of
students. Will this be a challenge for weekend students who are not in NYC?
Langone_Student_Marci No, this is typically not an issue for students for several reasons. 1
- you will take classes with other weekend students; 2 - you will form a study group (at least for
6
the first four classes) of people in your same situation (geographically and schedule wise) and 3 -
you can sometimes work online/on conference calls.
Andrey_Z How much of the part-time Langone and full-time Stern faculty
overlaps, approximately?
Langone_Student_Dean Professors teach both Full-time and Part-time courses, so the
faculty is typically the same for both programs. There may be some faculty members who only
teach in the Full-time or Part-time program due to scheduling reasons, but for the most part, there
is not a difference. Also, keep in mind that most Full-time students take electives in the evenings
with Part-time students, so the programs are pretty integrated.
Stanner To what extent do students have access to recruiters from top
consulting and financial services firms?
CCWP_Michael The PT program recruits with a select group of consulting firms
and financial services firms during the fall semester and hosts multiple career fairs and
networking receptions, which many of these firms attend.
starmba2011 What types of programming does CCWP do?
CCWP_Michael We design and deliver our own content and also use contract
vendors. Programs include resume review, networking strategies, job search strategies, personal
branding and Linked-In training, among others.
AmandaG Is it okay to have less than 2 years of work experience?
Langone_Student_Marcia The typical range of work experience is between 1 and 10 years, so
less than 2 years is fine. You will just want to make sure to mention in your essays the reason
that you think this is the right time for you to start an MBA program.
Matthewsays With weekend options limiting majors/concentrations, is it possible
to complete core requirements and then transfer to a weeknight schedule after year 1?
Admissions_Maggie You only need to spend the first 2 semesters in the program to
which you apply (Weeknights or Weekends). After the first 2 semesters, you may take courses in
another program on a space available basis. You do not necessarily need to transfer to the
weeknight program and could instead supplement weekend courses with weeknight options to
complete your specialization. Many students take both weekend and weeknight courses.
Eric Was the program everything you thought it would be?
Langone_Student_Dean I started in the Spring, and I admit that it took a semester to really
get involved because the school year was underway. However, I have become an officer of 3
clubs since then, and I have taken some really awesome classes. Overall, the program has been
7
very rewarding. The main difference between the FT & PT program is recruiting, though, and
this is important to be aware of if you plan to switch careers.
Sal_Bakhrani How big is a typical class?
Langone_Student_Divya The class size varies quite a bit, but classes typically will not have
more than 50 or 60 students, and many will have fewer.
Lisa I'm about to submit my application and I'm a little wary about the
Personal Statement. Are there some examples of good submission formats?
Admissions_Stefanie You may do almost anything for Essay 3 (with a few restrictions:
http://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicPrograms/PartTime/Admissions/ApplicationInstructions/Ess
ays/index.htm). Do not worry if you feel most comfortable submitting a written essay to describe
yourself to your classmates, many people submit great essays! We have received photos,
paintings, 3-D objects, etc... be creative if you so desire!
Elias For any student: Between working full time and attending Stern,
do you still have time for much of a social life?
Langone_Student_Divya Yes, you definitely do. It's a balancing act, but it's very do-able.
jmz157 Does the group work involved in NYU's part-time MBA make it
difficult for students who live outside of New York City?
Langone_Student_Dean Group work can cause some scheduling challenges, but this will
happen regardless of where you live. You can always conference calls if meeting isn’t possible
for every project. A lot of my group members have lived in NJ, and we've managed just fine.
swh5046 Do you know a classmate in the Weekend Program who does not
reside in NYC and has a long commute (flying distance?)
Admissions_Maggie Yes, students certainly participate in the weekend program who do
not reside in NYC. Courses are offered from 9 a.m. - noon and 1 - 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
Chris_Lewis I had my undergrad university send my transcripts directly to
Stern. Is that acceptable or do I need to submit it myself?
Admissions_Maggie Hi Chris, yes that is fine for your university to send transcripts to
us directly if that is its preferred method.
swh5046 Do you think that people with longer commutes are at a
disadvantage and/or hinder their academic performance in any way?
Langone_Student_Marcia Hi swh5046! The short answer is no. As far as commuting, as long
as you can get to class you will be fine. During orientation, you will form a study group, which is
8
selected based on how students prefer to work and where they live. My study group has been
using webex a lot to work together on presentations. Also, Stern has 3 PT options: Weeknights at
Manhattan, Weekends at Manhattan and Weeknights in Westchester, so pick the option that will
work best with your schedule.
Prospectvemba My work experience has mostly been in the medical sciences? Will
that be okay?
Admissions_Stefanie There is no required prior work experience to apply. The
Admissions Committee is looking for well-rounded individuals who are self-aware. Regardless
of industry, we look for quality over quantity when it comes to work expereince - things like
promotions, increased levels of responsibility, managing projects, etc.
Rozza Do PT students tend to be older than FT students at Stern?
Langone_Student_Dean There are more PT students (2,000) vs FT (800), so
we simply have a wider range of folks. I think the average age for the Full-time program is 27,
and the average age for the Part-time program is 28. I wouldn't say that the age thing leans in
either direction, but we PT students are definitely more attractive :)
Isque Hi. Is it best to wait to submit an application until all
recommendations are in, or is it OK to submit while recommendations are being completed?
Admissions_Maggie Feel free to submit your application whenever you are ready. The
recommendations may be submitted before or after you submit your portion of the application.
JeffM How many hours does the typical student study for a class per
week?
Langone_Student_Dean Everyone is different in terms of study habits. PT students usually
take 2 classes per semester, so I would say that you should expect to sacrifice another couple of
evenings or weekend days each week to do your work.
John_V._Romano For each NYU representative helping today: how did you craft
your creative essay, #3?
Langone_Student_Marci I created mine by just being very candid and open about myself
and who I am as a person. They are very big on getting to know the real you in the creative
essay, and so the more you can tell the admissions committee about yourself (to set yourself
apart)...the better. They also accept other types of submissions, such as artwork, for those who
are artistically inclined.
Kingcheng Which test should one take to get into the stern program?
Admissions_Maggie Either the GRE or the GMAT must be taken when applying to
Stern's MBA program. We do not have a preference.
9
WRHoward Are you able to specialize in Finance at the Westchester campus?
Langone_Student_Marcia Yes, you can. Finance electives are offered regularly at the
Westchester campus.
stern2011 Hi Divya, let’s say you want to work in a financial career, what’s
the attitude/feedback from employers toward PT students compared to FT ones?
Langone_Student_Divya The reputation of the part time students is the same as the
reputation of the full-time students, since the program is the same.
Dave Does anyone in here work full time and is currently taking their
MBA part time nights or weekends?
Langone_Student_Marci Everyone answering questions today works full time and goes to
school weeknights or weekends. The Part-time program is geared toward working professionals,
so just about all students work full-time.
starmba2011 Does the career office have extended working hours to
accommodate part-time students?
CCWP_Michael We are open Mon/Tues from 10am-7pm, Wed/Thurs from 10am-
6pm, and Fri from 9am-5pm. We also take phone appointments during those times.
l.w.lebron I have a B.S.B.A in Accounting. Are there additional courses
needed to switch to a degree in finance?
Admissions_Maggie Stern requires students to have an undergraduate degree prior to
starting the MBA program but does not require specific undergraduate degrees or coursework.
swh5046 I heard that some events are held on weeknights. How often are
those occasions and how critical is it to attend those events?
Langone_Student_Dean There are events literally every second of every day! They are
almost never required, but if you want to get more involved with club activities, then you should
expect to spend some more time on campus.
Stern11 Hello. I have had trouble changing the Work History form to fit
more information into the cells. Who should I contact about this problem?
Admissions_Stefanie The information in the work history form should be very brief. If
you need to include more information than the cells allow for, please include a note in Essay 4.
pb_parttime Are the credits from MBA program at a different school
trasferrable to Langone?
10
Admissions_Maggie Stern does not allow previous credits to transfer. However,
students may take placement tests in order to place out of certain required courses. If this occurs,
students need to take elective courses in order to ensure 60 credits are taken at Stern.
Lee_Feingold How much of the work required outside of class is group projects
vs individual?
Langone_Student_Marci It's a pretty good mix, but a little more heavily weighted towards
group work in your core courses. Most classes will have some type of individual component to
them. Once you finish core courses, you may choose electives that have more or less group
work, depending upon your preference.
Aisling My current job is in Atlanta, GA. However, if accepted I would be
able to move to my company's New York office. Have other students done this before
Admissions_Stefanie Yes, other applicants have been in a similar situation. To ensure
that the Admissions Committee is aware of this, please include a note from your company and/or
supervisor on letterhead explaining their support of your potential move if accepted.
Noahsingerman Hello, thanks for taking the time. For the current students - can I
ask how many specializations you have and what is "average"?
Langone_Student_Dean No problem. You can take up to 3 specializations, and I would say
that a lot of students do 2. Mine are finance and business law.
ar555 Can I drop off my transcripts in person, rather than mailing them,
as long as the envelops are stamped and sealed from the schools?
Admissions_Maggie Yes, you may drop off your transcripts in person at the MBA
Admissions Office.
jmz157 How difficult is it to transfer to the weekday option after a year if
you are accepted into the weekend option?
Langone_Student_Dean You may transfer on a space available basis. Also, you can take
weeknight courses even if you are in the weekend program and vice versa (after your first two
semesters), so you don’t necessarily need to switch.
Matthewsays If I'm unhappy with my GMAT score by May 15th, can I submit a
new score in June? Will this hold up my app or can the current score be reviewed too?
Admissions_Stefanie You can submit your application and include a note in Essay 4 that
you are retaking the GMAT in June. If you do so, the Admissions Committee will hold its review
of your application until we receive the updated score. Since official scores take a few weeks to
11
be received, please send an unofficial score report (via email or fax) right after you retake the
test.
AmandaG What is the maximum number of classes a PT student can take
each semester??
Langone_Student_Marcia PT students can take up to 9 credits both the Fall and Spring
semesters. You may also take 3 additional credits in the Winter Intensive and up to 12 credits in
the Summer.
Ehaque Is there a preferred GPA & GMAT score required to enroll in the
part-time MBA program? Any other requirements ? Thanks!
Admissions_Stefanie There are no minimum score requirements or GPA requirements.
You will probably want to take a look at our Class Profile to get an idea of the score ranges in
which 80% of our admitted students fall:
http://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicPrograms/PartTime/ExceptionalStudents/ClassProfile/index.
htm
Tracye Are the order of courses pretty much set for newly admitted
students -- are schedules predetermined?
Langone_Student_Marci You are automatically enrolled with your core group in 2 courses
each semester for the first 2 semesters, unless you test out of any of them. After the first two
semesters, you select your own schedule. Though keep in mind that some electives will require a
core course as a prerequisite.
swh5046 Does a part-time student have to maintain his/her employment
status while taking classes at NYU?
Admissions_Maggie The Part-time program is geared toward working professionals.
While maintaining a full-time job is not necessarily a requirement, the program is not meant to
be a substitute for a Full-time MBA program.
Dino26 I took the GMAT and I got 610 as score. Does NYU accept
students with this GMAT score?
Admissions_Stefanie We do not have a minimum score requirement. Please review our
Class Profile for an idea of where 80% of our admitted students score:
http://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicPrograms/PartTime/ExceptionalStudents/ClassProfile/index.
htm
Matthewgoldfarb What is the average age of the Part-time students at NYU?
Langone_Student_Divya The average age in the part time program is 28.
12
vinayr1 Hi, quick question. What is the deadline cutoff time for
applications on the 15th of May? Is it 11:59pm?
Admissions_Maggie Yes, the application deadline is 11:59 p.m. EDT on May 15th.
However, we will continue to review applications on a space available basis after the deadline.
joel_o Hi all, I have a question for the student representatives. Have any
of you participated in the DBi program? How was it?
Langone_Student_Marci I haven't participated in the DBi (Doing Business in…) program
but I've heard great things about them from anyone who has gone. I have, however, participated
in a spring break trek to South America, which was organized by one of the clubs, and it was an
incredible experience. NYU organizes various trips (for fun, not for credit) each year over spring
break, in addition to the all of the for-credit DBi programs.
Damion If you were to get rejected, how soon can a person apply again?
Admissions_Maggie You may apply for the next application cycle if you were not
admitted the first time you applied. For example, you may apply for the May 15th deadline if
you were not admitted after your September 15th application.
Peta This question is for adcom. Any suggestions on how to address a
low GPA?
Admissions_Stefanie You may wish to address a low GPA in Essay 4. If there were
circumstances that you believe contributed to a low GPA that the Admissions Committee should
take into account, please include them. You may also want to highlight other academic areas
where you have improved or made an effort to offset a low GPA.
DrewK Is there a cultural divide between the full time and part time
programs? Or do you find yourself integrated in classes with both.
Langone_Student_Dean Culturally, there is a divide, simply because the FTers are here all
day for only 2 years, and PTers go through the program at a different pace. In terms of classes,
your core classes will be with other PTers, and then you will have FTers in your elective classes,
which is a great way to meet other students. My electives are usually 50/50. Club activities are
FT heavy, and if you get involved with clubs you will definitely meet more FTers. All social
events, such as Beer Blast, Charity Ball and Spring Fling, include both FT and PT students.
Elias If any student plans to work outside of NYC upon graduation, what
is your opinion of the Stern-brand MBA throughout the country's employers?
CCWP_Michael Stern has a national reputation. In terms of finding employment
outside of NYC, it’s very helpful to utilize the Stern alumni network in different cities.
13
Philipginzburg Are there guest speakers or lecturers that come to the classes?
Does it depend on the classes a student takes?
Langone_Student_Marci Yes, it depends on the classes you are taking. As you progress and
take more electives, there is an increased likelihood of having speakers in classes. In addition,
students sometimes have people from their full-time jobs come in and speak if their work is
relevant to the class.
jmz157 If you are accepted for Fall 2011, can you defer when you want to
start classes to Spring 2012, or do you need to start in Fall 2011?
Admissions_Maggie We typically do not grant deferrals, so you should plan to apply for
the semester when you would like to start the program.
stern2011 Hi, I would like to know if there is some quota limitation of
acceptance for Man. weeknights/ weekends and West. weekends?
Admissions_Stefanie There is no specific quota for each location. We enroll about 450
part-time students total each fall and about 300 each spring, across all three locations.
damion Thank you all for taking the time to answer. Are part time student
still eligible for programs such as the study abroad programs?
Langone_Student_Marcia FT and PT students are both eligible for DBi (Doing Business In...)
which are 1.5 to 3 credit 1 -2 week intensive classes abroad. I also have a friend who started with
me in Fall '09, and she will be spending the Fall semester in India, so yes, PT students can
participate in study abroad. You just need a work situation that will accommodate this.
jmz157 Has the course material learned so far been helpful in your full-
time jobs?
Langone_Student_Divya For me, it has been very helpful. Even if you can't apply it right
away, there are some valuable insights from your classes that you will take to your work place.
Sal_Bakhrani Does Stern offer a specialization in real estate development?
Langone_Student_Marcia Stern does not offer a specialization in real estate development.
However, many real estate courses are offered at Stern, such as Operations in Real Estate
Development and Real Estate Finance. Students are also allowed to take up to 15 credits at
different NYU schools, which includes the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate.
AmandaG Will PT students be allowed to join all of the same clubs as FT
students?
Langone_Student_Dean FT and PT students belong to the same clubs, and PT and FT
students can hold leadership positions. A lot of clubs do host events during the day that PTers
14
usually can't make, but there are plenty of options to choose from at night. I would recommend
joining a short list of clubs first and focusing on them.
AmandaG How young are the youngest PT students??
Langone_Student_Divya The youngest I've heard of is 22.
Jdw If one of the recommendations is submitted past the deadline, but
the rest of the application is there, will the application still be evaluated?
Admissions_Stefanie Yes, applications completed after the deadline will be reviewed
once they are complete. Please note, however, that the Admissions Committee cannot guarantee
a notification by August 1 unless your application was entirely complete by the May 15 deadline.
Dino26 Is it true that 10% of students are accepted with a GMAT below
620?
Admissions_Stefanie Yes, 10% of admitted students have a GMAT score below 620.
vicho12 How many students are usually in study groups? Do we choose our
team ourselves or randomly? Do people get kicked of team projects?
Langone_Student_Dean Groups are anywhere from 3-6, and in my experience, you can
choose who you work with. I don't know anyone who's been "kicked out," though sometimes
there are evaluations at the end, and you can comment on each member's work contribution.
Participation is expected of all group members.
preeti_w What is the total cost of the course?
Admissions_Maggie For the 2010-2011 academic year, the cost of the program was
$1560 per credit, and the program is 60 credits. I recommend taking a look at our MBA
Financial Aid website at
http://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicPrograms/PartTime/Admissions/FinancialAid/index.htm for
a more comprehensive overview of the cost breakdown of the program, in addition to loan
opportunities, teaching fellowships and corporate sponsorship.
Aleks Do distinctions such as Cum Laude and work experience have
more weight than a GMAT score?
Admissions_Stefanie The Admissions Committee reviews applications holistically, and
all criteria carry equal weight.
Philipginzburg Once the application is complete, on average how long does it take
for a decision to be made?
15
Admissions_Maggie All applicants who submit a complete application by May 15 will
receive a decision by August 1st. However, applicants may hear back from us earlier. The MBA
Admissions Office begins reviewing applications immediately after the May 15th deadline.
Dave I'd love to hear the pros and cons of nights v. weekends.
Langone_Student_Dean I think it really depends on the type of job that you have. If you are
able to get to NYU by 6:00 p.m., weeknights can free up your weekends for studying, group
projects and whatever else you like to do on weekends. Some students just aren’t able to leave
work in time for class though, which makes weekends easier to manage. A lot of students do a
combination of weeknight and weekend courses after the first few semesters, just depending on
their work and vacation schedules.
Sal_Bakhrani How often are the weekend and the weeknight classes held?
Langone_Student_Marci If you take two classes per semester (which almost all PT students
do), you have class 2 nights a week for 3 hours each night. If you do it weekends, you take both
classes in 1 day (Saturday) for 6 hours total. (9:00 a.m. - noon and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.)
Kat_NYC How would you recommend filling out the salary portion of the
Work History Form if you’ve had jobs with low base salary but high take home due to overtime
or incentive programs? I ask because the form specifically focuses on Starting/Ending Salary and
Bonus.
Admissions_Stefanie You should include your specific salary figure on the Work
History form, but if there are other inclusions such as commissions or overtime, you may include
those as a note in the Work History document as well.
Xandra Would it be preferable for a business major college graduate to
take GMAT vs. GRE?
Admissions_Maggie Either test may be used to apply. The MBA Admissions Office
does not prefer one over the other.
Aleks Hello, when are the applicants notified of the decision? And when
does the academic year start?
Admissions_Stefanie If your application is complete by the deadline of May 15, then
you are guaranteed to receive notification by August 1, though it could very well be earlier that
you hear from us. The academic year begins with Pre-Term orientation on September 10.
stern2011 As foreigner holding H1B visa, are there any loans available from
Stern?
Admissions_Maggie For students holding an HIB Visa, you may be eligible for private
loans, which our MBA Financial Aid Office can provide more details about. Additionally, all
16
current students are eligible to apply to Teaching Fellowship positions after their first semester at
Stern, which can provide tuition remission as well. I recommend reviewing our MBA Financial
Aid website for additional details:
http://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicPrograms/PartTime/Admissions/FinancialAid/index.htm
Jennifer Has the Pre-Program Orientation been scheduled yet? If so, what is
the date?
Admissions_Maggie Pre-Term Orientation, which is mandatory, has been scheduled for
Saturday, September 10th and Sunday, September 11th, 2011.
JDawnSmith Is Finance the most sought area of study when considering an
MBA at Stern FT & PT?
Admissions_Maggie Stern offers over 20 specializations, and since students may select
up to 3 specializations, there is not necessarily one area that is more popular than others.
cynsation333 Do I need to take statistics and a calculus to get into the Langone
Program?
Admissions_Maggie Stern does not require any specific courses prior to enrolling in the
program. We do require completion of an undergraduate degree prior to enrolling though.
Matthewgoldfarb What is the percentage of applicants who receive interviews for
admission to the part-time program?
Admissions_Maggie Interviews are not a required application component for the Part-
time MBA program. However, the MBA Admissions Committee may request an interview if we
have specific questions regarding an application.
Matthewgoldfarb How much value do potential employers place on your GPA while
enrolled at the Stern school?
CCWP_Michael It depends. Employers that recruit at Stern know not to expect
GPAs to appear on resumes, per Stern’s policy. That said, certain employers have a general rule
of thumb of preferring a 3.5 (banking, consulting) or a 3.0 (most others).
Divining How are credits split between core classes, specializations and
electives?
Langone_Student_Dean The Part-time MBA program has 33 required credits and 27
elective credits. After taking your first 4 core courses, you may take a combination of core
courses and electives.
Aboyce Can the personal expression include two separate components? A
written and a visual?
17
Admissions_Stefanie Yes, Essay 3 may include two components. Please make sure to
note in your written component that you are also mailing another piece, if that is the case.
Junius What are the Langone core courses? These don't seem to be part of
the full-time program.
Langone_Student_Divya The core courses for full time and part time are similar except for a
few additional 1.5 credit courses that are part of the Langone core: Business Communication,
Collaboration, Conflict and Negotiation, Global Perspectives on Enterprise Systems.
Jill Do we need official transcripts from schools where we studied
abroad if the credits appear on our college transcripts without a grade?
Admissions_Maggie If your study abroad grades are listed on your transcript, we do not
require the official transcript from your study abroad institution. If grades are not listed on your
transcript, then you should request that your study abroad institution send your transcripts as
well.
cynsation333 How much is each credit at NYU Langone Program for out of state
students?
Admissions_Maggie Since NYU is a private institution, tuition per credit is $1560 for
both in-state and out-of-state students in the 2010 – 2011 academic year. Tuition will vary
slightly from year to year.
Andrey_Z Is anyone here planning to do a complete 180 and switch industries
when they graduate?
Langone_Student_Dean I'm changing from sales to corporate finance. Granted, I'm staying
within the pharmaceutical industry, but finance recruiting is like changing industries. The answer
is that either way, it is usually more difficult to switch careers as a PTer, but I know several
students who have done it. In general, we don't have access to the same recruiting process as
FTers.
Lvyunke Can I take GMAT on the last day of deadline for it to be counted?
Admissions_Maggie Yes, if you take the GMAT on May 15th
, your application will still
be considered complete by the deadline.
starmba2011 How often can students meet with a career counselor?
CCWP_Michael Students can meet with a career counselor as often as they like.
However, we do want to ensure you are making progress in your job search, so we will give you
"homework," where follow-up meetings are check-ins around that homework and other issues.
18
Elias Weird question: Did any of the current students here enroll in the
program at least partially because they felt unchallenged at work? Please share.
Langone_Student_Divya I do know of students who felt unchallenged at work and started
the program in order to move to a better job. In some senses, it might be easier to have it easy at
work when you do your MBA because the MBA is pretty challenging! :)
swh5046 Stefanie, you mentioned that NYU typically enrolls less students in
the Spring compared to Fall. Is it more competitive to get admitted in the Spring?
Admissions_Stefanie The Spring incoming class is indeed typically smaller than the Fall.
The rate of acceptance is the same for both. We receive more applications for the Fall incoming
class, hence there are more students that enroll then.
Lvyunke May I talk only about my hobbies in Essay 3?
Langone_Student_Marcia Essay 3 is another way for Admissions to get to know you beyond
your test scores, GPA and work experience. One of the things I loved about Stern was that they
wanted to get to know me beyond all the statistics. For my essay 3, I wrote about a party I throw
every year and included samples of the invitations, menu, guest list (including how I knew
everyone), etc. I was dreading it at first, but really had lots of fun doing it and it certainly brought
out another side of me that wasn't evident in the rest of the application. Have fun with essay 3!
starmba2011 When should students start going to the career center?
CCWP_Michael We recommend you meet with us ASAP. Even if you feel satisfied
with your career progression, we can help you develop and refine your aspirations in a way that
would empower you on the job. And we might also help you consider alternatives that you had
not thought about before.
Javastern Are most part-time students married and with children?
Langone_Student_Dean There are 2,000 of us PTers, so there is no "norm." I know a lot of
students who are married, and plenty who are not. The family stuff definitely makes it harder to
join clubs and attend other activities, but I know plenty of married folks who are really involved-
-it all depends on you!
Oded One can complete the MBA between 2-6 years. Will the cost
change according to the time it takes you to graduate?
Langone_Student_Marcia Yes, it takes 2-6 years to complete the program. The tuition cost
does go up a bit each year, so yes, the longer you stretch it out the more you will end up paying
per credit. Most students complete the program in around 3 years.
stern1 How have you handled managing a full-time job and working?
19
Langone_Student_Marci It's definitely a challenge, but doable. The main thing is to have a
talk with your boss and make sure you have an understanding that you will need to dedicate X
hours/nights per week to school. With the understanding on my boss' end (and my family and
friends), I've found that it is possible to balance everything. The biggest thing is definitely setting
expectations at work in advance of beginning your program.
joel_o At what stage in the program do you need to declare your areas of
specialization?
Langone_Student_Divya You don't have to declare specializations until toward the end of
the program...but you should have a good idea of what you want to do by the end of your first
year so you can take your classes accordingly.
Divining Are there many langone students pursuing nonprofit careers? Are
there any related courses?
Langone_Student_Marcia Yes, there are students working in the non-profit sector, and many
of them belong to the Social Enterprise Association (SEA). Stern offers courses focused on the
non-profit sector, and as a Stern student, you can take courses at other NYU graduate schools.
You might be interested in taking some of these electives at Wagner, the Public Administration
school at NYU.
Javastern Could you take one class during the week and the other on the
weekend?
Langone_Student_Divya Not in your first two semesters. But after these two semesters, you
could mix and match weeknight and weekend courses.
Tracye How do we "place out" of a core class? Is this something that we
do after acceptance and before orientation?
Langone_Student_Marci In order to place out of a class, you must have an undergraduate or
graduate degree in that specific subject area, or you may take placement tests to place out of
certain core courses. Students receive details about this after being admitted to the program.
Eric If part-timers don't have access to recruiters, is it a lot harder to
switch careers?
CCWP_Michael It is harder to switch careers if you do not spend time networking.
You can gain access to recruiters through networking, so ensure that you budget time to do this.
JoeOrt Dean - I'm in your boat - I want to switch from sales (b2b research
and consulting) into finance (was a math/econ major undergrad) Easy/hard to switch.
Langone_Student_Dean It's difficult to switch simply due to the effort that you need to put
into making the transition BUT, I did it, and so have some of my friends. The best advice I can
20
give is to join some clubs and meet other students early on in order to network and get some
resources to recruit effectively.
Tjohnson Because access to recruiting events is limited for PTers, what is
actually available in terms of interviewing skills, networking, resume, etc? Thanks!
CCWP_Michael The career center for working professionals (CCWP) is available
to help you with interviewing skills, networking, and resume review, among many other
services. This center is dedicated to the PT program.
Lvyunke What is the average starting salary for graduates of the Langone
MBA program?
CCWP_Michael We do not publish salary stats for the PT program due to the fact
that many students decide to continue with their current employers and may not be making a
career move right after the program is finished.
Pdasilva With regards to employers - is there any emphasis placed on your
gmat score? I have read this elsewhere.
CCWP_Michael Certain employers, such as banks and consulting firms, will look at
your GMATs. Other employers may not.
stern1 What is campus life like at the Westchester campus?
Langone_Student_Marcia I'm glad you asked the question. I am the VP of Westchester
students for PTLF/SCorp (our student government). We plan many activities at the Westchester
campus to give students an opportunity to network and make friends. Going to business school
needs to be about more than sitting in class and meeting with your study group! We are also
hosting many All Stern events in Westchester so that Manhattan students join us, and
Westchester students participate in many activities at the Manhattan campus as well. We get
great professors in Westchester (they are the same professors who teach at the Manhattan
campus), and the classes tend to be a little smaller, which is a plus. In short, you will experience
the Stern community in Westchester and have many opportunities to become involved.
Admissions_Maggie The chatroom is now closed. Thanks again for joining us! The chat
transcript will be posted on our website, and we look forward to reviewing your applications
after the May 15th
deadline!
Langone_Student_Marcia It was great chatting with everyone! Good luck on your applications,
and I look forward to hopefully seeing you at Stern (Manhattan and Westchester campuses)! Thanks!
Langone_Student_Marci Thank you everyone for all of your questions today! It was nice
speaking with you!
Langone_Student_Dean Thanks for talking with us tonight! Good luck with applications.
21
Admissions_Stefanie Thanks so much for chatting with us tonight! We look forward to
receiving your applications on May 15, and we wish you the best of luck in finalizing them!
CCWP_Michael Thanks for your questions everyone! Good luck in your search!
