Agricultural Technologies
To boost Agricultural Production
To face Risks and Challenges
• Crop Traits for Defense against Pests and Disease and tolerant to Droughts/Floods‐Extreme weather conditions
• Climate Change adaptation• Soil and land management• Crop management• Livestock management • Water management• Energy management• Climate information services
• Agricultural Drones to increase crop production & Monitor crop growth.
• Robots are used in harvesting & picking in large sale farming.
• Smart Agriculture Sensors are used in precision agriculture, providing data that helps farmers monitor and optimize crops, as well as adapt to changing environmental factors
• Genetic Manipulation
• Hydroponics & Aeroponics, Tissue culture, Vertical Farming
-
Climate information & Agriculture• In agriculture, climate plays a major role.• Farmers make agronomic decisions by looking at the weather.• For that, they need precise climate information (Weather Forecasts).• 3 types of weather forecasts; Long term, medium term and short term forecasts.
• Farmers use various sources to get climate information,

• Very low use of mobile weather alerts/applications indicate high inclination towards traditionality and less sophistication of farmers with regard to the climate information.
• Mobile weather alerts/applications are having very low reliability.
Mobile Weather alerts as a source of Weather Information Delivery
-
Need for Mobile weather information• Weather forecasting at different spatial and temporal scales would be significant tool for adaption in agriculture under future climate change scenario.
• Information and Communication Technologies can also play a great role to disseminate the information.
• Accessing weather information through mobile SMS/ Voice messages/ apps.
-
Weather information delivery through mobile phones in Sri Lanka
• Currently agricultural weather information is given to the farmer through SMS/ Voice messages.
• There is no specific weather app for agriculture.• The agriculture industry requires weather variables and derivatives as Sri Lanka’s monsoon season spans over six months.
• Dialog Axiata PLC and Ideamart, launched an aggregated weather solution, ‘WeatherGuru’.
• “WeatherGuru’s forecasting capability will enhance the offerings provided through the Dialog Govi Mithuru service by providing farmers with actionable weather advisory services.

Recommendations• For best results, instead of providing weather information as a stand‐alone service, it should bundled with other complementary information, such as customized crop guidance, market/price information, or even as a package with index insurance schemes.
-
Contd..• The communication tools should be targeted to suit both the information and the users.
• It is also important to develop mobile platforms that facilitate two‐way information flows, so that the collection of localized data and feedback from farmers can be done simultaneously.
• Policies should be formulated to integrate the knowledge of Agricultural expertise and Technology expertise under one platform.
• New technologies can be introduced to farmers through 4P concept (Public‐Private‐Producer‐Partnerships)
• Since this is an effective way to attract younger generation to agriculture, policies should be formulated to train young farmers on this.
