Whoever first said that time is“flying by” sure wasn’t kidding.Here we are at the end of anotherfiscal year for SPMH, and muchhas been happening. Iknow you will enjoyreading about themany wonderful eventsand successful proj-ects of the past yearhere in our fabulousnewsletter, BUT,please make it a prior-ity to attend our AnnualMeeting on September15th in Music Hall. It ispositively the best timeand place to get an ‘upto date’ report on the status of theMusic Hall Revitalization and,VERY IMPORTANTLY, to be oneof the first who sees the ‘unveiling’of the historic, artistic, hand carvedwooden panels from the original

1878 Music Hall Organ. No onehas seen them in this ‘new’ condi-tion in over 100 years and theyhaven’t been on public view for

over 40 years. What atreat!! Don’t miss it!!

We will also an-nounce the election ofSPMH officers andnew directors who willbe working hard forMusic Hall. Newly ap-pointed directors willjoin the others in rep-resenting our dedi-cated members ofSPMH (I hope you areamong them. If not, it

Kings of Silent Comedy wasthe perfect title for the SPMHMighty Wurlitzer program concertsof May 12th. Both morning andevening shows were sell-outs,thanks to the hard work of DonSiekmann. Well, the boys, Charlie

Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel &Hardy, had us roar with laughter,enhanced with wonderful accom-paniment by Clark Wilson at theMighty Wurlitzer! Clark tours world

wide as concert artist, and masterof adding sound to silent movies.In fact he is so good, with musicand sound effects, that, as wewatched the big screen, the silentfilms seemed to ‘talk’! Clark works

Gary Kidney, MusicHall technical directorand his crew trans-formed the ballroominto a movie palace.While accentuating themany artifacts from theAlbee Theater through-out the ballroom, thehighlight was the crownjewel, our Mighty Wurl-itzer pipe organ. Withthe free popcorn, movieand music, I thought Iwas back in the oldAlbee again!

with a young girl,her Mom, Pop andGram. A piano andorgan student,with aspirations ofbecoming a pro-fessional organist -- who knows,someday she maygive a concert onour Wurlitzer! I al-ways enjoy givingtours of the organ,and this familywas a delight!

As many ofyou know, theAlbee Wurlitzerbuilt and installedin that grand the-atre in 1927, isvery dear to me. Iworked on the in-strument as ayoung fellow in themid 1960s, and

The use of Music Hall as avenue for Silent Film entertainmentis not a new ambition, but rather a‘2nd Act’ after a lengthy ‘intermis-sion’. The following excerpts takenfrom the September 5, 1915Cincinnati Enquirer, indicate theimportance of the program a cen-tury ago.

“Cincinnati is to be initiatedinto the realm of the “AdvancedPhotodrama” at Music Hall, ac-cording to Manager Millton Gos-dorfer, who explains that it is theidea to conduct a silent drama the-ater along the lines of the famedStrand of New York. The manage-ment is confident that the musicalprogram alone would suffice to at-tract devotees of the screen. At thesame time the point is brought outthat the programs are arrangedwith an eye to appealing to everytaste.”

The initial program, which in-cluded the following selections,gives an idea of the ambitious en-terprise:

Opening overture of the op-eretta Beautiful Galathea; News of

the World, the motion camera seesall, knows all, tells all; “The FunnyPage Comes to Life”; “PicturesqueTravel Jaunt”, visiting odd cornersof the earth; the great organ ofMusic Hall, played by J. AlfredSchehl; Mrs. Antoinette Wernor-West, the distinguished May Festi-val soloist, “Oh ,Come With Me ina Summer Night”; The House of aThousand Candies, a mysteryplay; ”Heinie and Louie” in humor-ous adventures.

“The immense stage has beenconverted into a huge flower gar-den, with fountains and electricaleffects of varying hues. The lobbyhas been elaborately decoratedand converted into a hall of her-aldry with rich decorations of em-broidered silk and satin banners. Inthe center of the lobby stands thestatue of a church banked in flow-ers and plants. Even the exterior ofMusic Hall has illuminations inwhich the national colors have thechief part.”

then in 2007, rebuilt the instrumentto factory new specifications. MyInstallation work in the Music HallBallroom was completed in 2009. Iam honored to have been associ-ated with this renaissance of theWurlitzer in our beloved MusicHall, and hope to take care of the

instrument for many years tocome.

In April the Ohio Valley Chap-ter (OVC) of the American TheatreOrgan Society proposed the gift ofthe “Mighty Wurlitzer Organ” toSPMH.

At the May Board meeting,President Don Siekmann sharedhis document, summarizing mat-ters relating to the organ from earlydiscussions with SPMH, CAA andOVC through its subsequent 2009installation in the Music Hall Ball-room. The document refers to

signed contracts among SPMH,CAA, the City of Cincinnati, OVC—the owners of the organ and theanonymous foundation that pro-vided $1.4M donation to SPMH forthe rebuilding and installation ofthe organ. Issues considered were: • financial or other associatedrisks for SPMH as owner• the condition of the instrumentlong-term• the ability of SPMH to maintainits condition

SPMH Wurlitzer OwnershipNegotiations in Progress

Published in May 2015, thisenlightening book was written byMark Palkovic, seniorlibrarian at the of theUniversity of Cincin-nati’s College Conser-vatory of Music. TheWurlitzer Company his-tory, from its Cincinnatifounding in 1856 byGerman immigrantFranz Rudolph Wurl-itzer, its product/instru-ment development(most notably the“Mighty Wurlitzer” The-atre Organ) to its acquisition bythe Gibson Guitar Corp. in 2006, istold in an entertaining way. Numer-ous photographs complement the

historical facts. Among these aretwo by well-known Cincinnati pho-

tographer, PhilipGroshong. One is ofSPMH board memberRon Wehmeier, ofRonald F. WehmeierOrgan Services, at theMusic Hall ballroomAlbee “Mighty Wurl-itzer”. The other is aview of Ron’s homemusic room showinghis Wurlitzer theatreorgan and Wurlitzerharp.

Ron Wehmeier, who rebuilt, in-stalled and maintains the organ,assured the directors that theMighty Wurlitzer is in excellentshape and thatno large ex-penditures areanticipated formany decades.The annual up-keep of the in-strumentcurrently costsapproximately$7,000 peryear includinginsurance.Scott Santan-gelo assertedthat CAAstands ready to support SPMH asowner and directors voiced generalagreement for SPMH ownership.The following motion was madeand voted upon: The ExecutiveCommittee is authorized to negoti-ate terms for accepting the dona-tion of the Mighty Wurlitzer Organand any other contracts deemednecessary, with OVC and other ap-propriate parties. A subcommitteeincluding Peter Koenig, AndrewBowen, Tricia Johnson, Ken Krei-der and Don was formed to beginnegotiations. It was decided thatgoing forward, a Mighty WurlitzerCommittee would be appointed todeal with issues and oversee pro-gramming and publicity.

At the June Board meeting

Ken Kreider reported that he hasbeen working on drafting neces-sary documents dealing with thegifting of the organ. Peter Koenigvoiced the need for a qualified ap-praiser. The following motion was

made andagreed upon:that Don Siek-mann be givenexecutive au-thority to signon behalf of theboard of SPMHany agree-ments regard-ing the changein ownership ofthe MightyWurlitzer fromOVC to SPMH,and that appro-

priate funds be made available topay reasonable expenses such ascosts of an appraisal. Following theJune meeting, it was determinedthat Ron Wehmeier is best quali-fied to appraise the “Mighty Wurl-itzer”. Subsequently, the appraisalwas performed and given to thesubcommittee. A request for fund-ing of maintenance costs for thenext five years was made to theanonymous donor organizationwhich funded the organ restora-tion/installation. The request wasgranted and Ron Wehmeier willcontinue to provide his services.

It is anticipated that all negoti-ations will be completed before theAnnual Meeting on September15th.

SPMH has collaborated withCincinnati Arts Association to cre-ate a more robust presence forSPMH by integrating content forthe current Music Hall facebookpage. The initiative is a first step inSPMH’s plan toreach and engagea younger audi-ence for our mem-bership andevents.

Megan Halland Joanne Grueter initially ex-plored developing a stand alonefacebook page for SPMH, but aftermeeting with our partner organiza-tion, CAA, they recognized thatSPMH could quickly jumpstart itssocial marketing efforts by leverag-ing the current audience of theCincinnati Music Hall facebookpage. The Cincinnati Music Hallpage has on average, 72,000 visitsper month and 20,000 followers.Together, Megan and Joanne withMax Larson, CAA’s Digital Market-ing Manager developed a calendarof proposed social posts featuringinteresting historical facts and sur-prising tid bits about Music Halland her history, for CAA to sprinklein its weekly promotional activity.

Content runs the gamut, frombeautiful photos of Music Hall in allher glory, both present and past,sunny days in Washington Parkand stormy clouds over the Hall.SPMH has been able to tie in

some of our current activities(cleaning the Springer statue) withhistorical facts about the statue it-self. Facebook offers many waysto attract a younger audience.Video content is an exciting way to

present SPMH’skey initiatives. Todate, two videoscentered on TheMighty Wurlitzerhave been posted,showcasing this

unique and beautiful asset. Onevideo tells “A Brief History” of theWurlitzer’s past with the Albee The-ater in the time of silent movies. Itfeatures SPMH’s own RonWehmeier, who provides a brief butenlightening history of the organand all that was entailed in its in-stallation in Music Hall.

It is our hope and plan to con-tinue to develop engaging and ro-bust content for the site over time,focusing on our tour activity, Wurl-itzer concerts, and relevant and in-teresting facts about Music Halland her history. During the revital-ization period, we will have addi-tional opportunities to present pastand present perspectives to agrowing audience. In my short time here at MusicHall I have become amazed at therich culture and history this buildingholds and its great stories. I havemet travelers from all over the USand the world, seeking a peek in-side this regional jewel and nationaltreasure. With ample parking, out-door entertainment and restau-rants, just beyond its doors, theyfeel compelled to stop to take atour of Music Hall.

To fully understand whatdraws visitors to this place though,we need to see past the grandstructure, artwork, marble and crys-tal and look to the stories…- The Allegory of the Arts paintingabove the crystal chandelier was

“lost” only to be rediscovered in1941 when cleaning the ceiling.- The 1878 Hook and HastingsOrgan, which was located inSpringer Auditorium was the sec-ond largest in the world.- Acoustically plagued LincolnCenter envies the incredible soundquality inside the hall, which is said,“to feel like being inside of a fine in-strument or violin.”- Financing to build Music Hall wasfrom the people and for the people.Said to be the first matching grantin America, even the school chil-dren pitched in!

The Music Hall Tour programhas the opportunity to bring thecommunity together — and unlikeany other institution in Over-the-Rhine, its stories instill a sense ofcommunity pride in the knowledgeof our shared history. It is importantto remember the people touchedby this great building and tostrengthen ties with schools, nurs-ing homes, professional and civicorganizations, including neighbor-ing businesses, to offer somethingspecial, something that can buildcommunity cohesiveness. The per-sonal Music Hall stories told bytour patrons are amazing and thisinteraction enhances the experi-ence.

The people who volunteer areunparalleled in their commitment,caring and value to this program.And a top-notch tour program canonly be possible with a top-notchTour Guide Team of volunteers.Therefore, when we turn to imag-ine a vision for the Music Hall TourProgram, our goals are simple:

Goal #1: To create a tour pro-gram with engaging stories and en-hanced quality of storytelling.

Improve the program’s accuracy,uniqueness and value, and lever-age it to create multiple tour pro-grams, each highlighting a uniqueaspect of the building. This will in-crease the ability to generate draw-ing power so that visitors want toreturn again and again. Toward thisgoal we have fact checked and fin-ished our first “official” tour script.Plans are being formed for toursthat focus on, “The Ladies’ Legacy”about the women who helpedMusic Hall come to be; “Presidentsand Pop”, featuring famous peoplewho have visited; “We Who BuiltThis”, focused on immigrants andfreed slaves. There is much workto be done, and boy, are we ex-cited! The tour program has initi-ated our first open houses of thebuilding in conjunction with suchevents as the ‘Macy’s Fine ArtSampler Weekend’ and the ‘All-Star Game’ week in July! We havetechnology in place to amplify aguide’s voice to improve the patronexperience!

Goal #2: To have the highestquality volunteer guides with thebest training. Build a volunteer de-velopment program that enhancesthe experience of the volunteer, in-stilling a sense of wonder, team-work and pride for the life-longlearner. Toward this goal we havesupported 10 volunteers to attendleadership training in partnershipwith CincinnatiUSA, focusing ontourism and customer service.Monthly meetings with guestspeakers are in store in the near

MUSIC HALL Marks 12future. In addition, we are automat-ing the volunteer applicationprocess making it easier to be-come a Music Hall Tour Guide. Andlastly, we now have a feedbackloop for Tour Guides and patrons toimprove the quality of the programin real time. By shortening re-sponse time to tour requests andby the acceptance of credit cards,both patron and volunteer satisfac-tion is increased.

We have so much more toshare with you about the ‘happen-ings’ of the Tour Program here at

Music Hall. So whether your inter-est is personal, academic, arts en-richment, community involvement,or just ‘for the fun of it’ - take us upon the invitation. “Atop my stand, I watch andstare, as people pass from here tothere. My life my gifts…most un-aware.” This is a ‘hypotheticalquote’ from the marble bust in thesouth hall entrance to Music Hall.Who was this Charles Aiken andwhat did he do to deserve a marbleportrait carved by the eminentsculptor, Preston Powers of Flo-rence, Italy, unveiled in Music Hall1884, just two years after hisdeath?

Born in New Hampshire in1818 to parents whose ancestorsemigrated from Ireland and Scot-land, his familial tendency was to-ward the musical arts. However, hiseducation at Dartmouth Collegewhere he earned his diploma in1838, was a rather ‘liberal arts’course of study. Realizing thatmusic was of singular importance

in his life, he sought temporary ‘in-tern’ type work in the field in citiesof Pennsylvania and Kentucky, inCincinnati and St. Louis. He re-turned to Cincinnati in 1842 to takeup permanent residency, teachingmusic to classes of adults. In 1848Charles became the successor ofWilliam F. Colburn, the first musicteacher in Cincinnati publicschools. From the start Charleswas determined to introduce musicas one of the branches of study inthe public schools and with eachpassing year he devoted more ofhis efforts toward developing a uni-versal vocal arts program through-out the Cincinnati school system.Beginning with advanced classes insecondary schools, he designed acourse of study requiring at leasttwo music lessons per week, forthousands of young people. reading and vocalization were em-phasized while works of the great-est composers were utilized toeducate and energize the youngsingers.Aiken’s contri-butions werewell noted. Theoffice of super-intendent ofmusic of publicschools wascreated andProfessorAiken was for-mally placed inthe position.

Notingthat love ofmusic is notage depend-ent, Charlesextended hiscourse of in-struction to theprimary gradesin public schools. General knowl-edge of music and music instruc-tion became requirements for allcandidates for teachers’ positionsin all levels of Cincinnati publicschool. At the time there was no ef-ficient instructional material so Pro-fessor Aiken, with assistance of hisassociates in the music departmentproduced “The Young Singer’sManual” in1860. In 1866 his “HighSchool Choralist” was published.This book was updated in 1872with “The Choralist’s Companion”and by 1875 he had to his credit, aseries of music books, “Cincinnati

Music Readers.” Professor Aikendevoted thirty years to diligentmusic training in the publicschools. A modest and humble

man who ad-vanced the mu-sical culture inCincinnati morethan did anyother individual,he eschewedthe spotlight.

He diedOctober 4,1882, just threeyears after retir-ing from his po-sition. Oneweek later offi-cers and teach-ers of the publicschools met atHughes HighSchool to plan apermanent in-stallation com-

memorating both the man and hisgreat contribution to Cincinnati.The planning resulted in the com-mission of the marble bust, paid forby teachers of Cincinnati and byAiken’s former students. Thevestibule of Music Hall was chosenas a fitting place for the monument,as the Hall frequently resoundedwith the youthful voices of hun-dreds of choralists trained and ledby this dedicated man, known as“Father of Vocal Music in PublicSchools.”

Carved Organ Panels UpdateSince reporting in the Decem-

ber issue of MUSICHALL Marks when it wasnoted that two carvingsby the famed William Frywere added to the con-servation project (onedonated by the LouiseDieterle Nippert estateand the other returnedby the Cincinnati Mu-seum Center), greatprogress has beenmade. The first of allpanels to be restoredwas exhibited in TheCincinnati PreservationAssociation’s 50th An-niversary CelebrationExhibition in the CultureGallery of the MuseumCenter. The well at-tended exhibit which hada six month run, closedon April 5th. Another re-stored panel was a fea-ture in the CincinnatiSymphony Orchestra’sexhibit ‘Your Self-GuidedArt Tour of Music Hall’.This exhibit was a pro-motion of its February 6th and 7thconcert program, a highlight ofwhich was Mussorgsky’s “Picturesat an Exhibition”. The panel, with adetailed information board, is cur-rently displayed in the south side ofthe balcony. Both the MuseumCenter and the Music Hall exhibits

provided the SPMH project addedvisibility and publicawareness.

On April 15th KathyJanson and Ed Riderphotographed and cata-logued all remainingparts of the carved organscreen, housed at theMuseum Center. JenniferJensen, Registrar of theMuseum Center signedthe document officiallytransferring all compo-nents of the organ toSPMH. The 30 frames,molding parts and em-bellishments were thenmoved to Music Hallwhere Scott Santangeloand Gary Kidney super-vised the move to stor-age. Frames identifiedas those belonging topanels undergoingrestoration at Heller Con-servation Services, wereshipped to the Nashvillestudio in May.

Be-ginning onFebruary 9th,the huge proj-ect was com-pleted in amere 4 days.Scioto Serviceswas the pri-mary vendorforstripping/wax-ing while AxisInteriors Sys-tems was hiredfor repairs.More than fourdecades ofwax and dirtwere strippedaway, dam-aged areaswere repairedwith color- matched epoxies, andall was then waxed and buffed. SPMH Timeline A Walk Through HistoryCrossing the Central Parkway

Bridge connecting The WCETGarage to Music Hall, one opensthe back entrance to a welcomingsight. The history of Music Hall, asa photo journal (1876—2010), de-picted on the walls of the 125 footlong corridor, encourages the pa-tron to pause, view, learn interest-ing facts, stories, biographies,before presenting tickets to enterthe main auditorium. Few venuesoffer such an opportunity, a walkthrough history in such a conciseand entertaining way.

How did this Timeline creationcome to be? In 1995 an SPMHcommittee headed by VP AshleyFord, hatched the idea for the time-line. Among committee memberswere Linda Siekmann, Julien Ben-jamin, Peggy Kahn and CarolNagel. Envisioned were four topicsfor exploration: 1. the history of the building, 2. the history of the resident musi-cal organizations,3. famous artists who have playedin Music Hall 4. Important city, national andworld events

Historian Suzanne De Lucahelped research the images whilesuch organizations as the Cincin-

nati Historical Society, the PublicLibrary, The Cincinnati Enquirerand the archive departments ofperforming arts organizations con-tributed historic photographs andimages. Cincinnati design firm,Catt Lyon Design, Inc. was hired tobring the ideas to life. The timelinewas presented on a series of 4’ X8’ panels with a large mural of an1877 Music Hall image positionedon the east end corridor wall.Joyce Van Wye headed the com-mittee which completed work in thecorridor: painting, track lighting andcarpeting. Funding was providedby a generous grant from the Nip-pert Charitable Foundation. TheCincinnati Enquirer, on September20, 1999, reported the Ribbon Cut-ting ceremony a celebratory event,proclaiming that “Music Hall’s blahentranceway from Central Parkwayfinally makes a first impression be-fitting Cincinnati’s elegant musicpalace. This latest addition reas-sures that Cincinnatians generationafter generation, continue to pre-serve and update ReubenSpringer’s gift to the city. Cincinnatiarchitect Samuel Hannaford’s origi-nal design is again celebrated andrenewed.”

LumenoCity 1915While LumenoCity has be-

come a popular and well antici-pated August event, Music Hallfeatured an ex-travaganza in1915 whichproduced thesame high levelof excitementas today’sthrilling illumi-nation! To put itlightly, audi-ences wereelectrified!! The November 28,1915 issue of the Cincinnati En-quirer announced the festival with“’Voice Will Cross Continent toOpen First Electric Show Ever Heldin Cincinnati’ Electrical ProsperityWeek, the first electric show everheld in this city, will be opened atMusic Hall tomorrow afternoon.”

Electrical Prosperity Week(Monday November 29 to Saturday,December 4, 1915) was originatedby the Society for Electrical Devel-opment of New York and was ob-served throughout the entirecountry. It was designed to placebusiness in general, and the elec-trical industry in particular, on a firmprosperity basis. Concurrently theWorld’s Fair “The Pan-Pacific Inter-national Exposition” was held inSan Francisco. Its primary purposewas to celebrate the completion ofthe Panama Canal but it was seenas an opportunity to showcase the

city’s extraordinary recovery fromthe 1906 earthquake and subse-quent fire. New technologies were

featured high-lights includingcars, airplanes,telephones, mo-tion picturesand householdappliances ofevery type. Thecenterpiece ofthe San Fran-cisco World’s

Fair was the 435 foot Tower of Jew-els covered with 100,000 cut glasscolorful Novagems illuminated byover 50 powerful electrical search-lights at night. Cities across thecountry took the opportunity to joinin with their own celebrations of thecompletion of the Panama Canal,the anticipation of trade opportuni-ties and the dawn of a new day.The expositions introduced techno-logical marvels to the everydayfamily of moderate means. Electri-cal Prosperity Week was a week ofextraordinary spectacle.

The events in Cincinnati wereopened when C. C. Moore, Presi-dent of the Panama-Pacific Interna-tional Exposition in San Francisco,telephoned W. W. Freemans, Pres-ident of the local exhibition. NewtonM. Miller, Ohio Commissioner tothe San Francisco Exposition,talked briefly, and Mayor FrederickSpiegel replied. Seats in the center

of Music Hall were equipped withextension ‘telephones’ which al-lowed 800 people to hear everyword of President Moore’s greetingand Mr. Freeman’s response. A se-ries of motion pictures, includingscenes of the transmission in SanFrancisco and the pavilion at theExposition where President Moorespoke to Cincinnati, were enjoyedby members of the audience. Theywere alsotreated to aview of thePacific Oceanand thesounds of itscrashingwaves. Otherfilms showedthe first tele-phone madeand the man-ner of con-necting thelines to formthe transcontinental circuit. ‘Talk-ing-picture’ movies were free, andwere given every afternoon andevening.

All the floor space in the northwing of Music Hall was occupied byexhibitors who converted that sec-tion into a veritable fairyland elicit-ing exclamations of sheeramazement from those whocrowded around. Electrically oper-ated musical instruments, electri-cally propelled Christmas toys andilluminated Christmas trees de-lighted everyone. A ‘Home Electric’was constructed consisting of a

garden, living and dining rooms,kitchen and laundry. The ‘home’was ‘inhabited’ by a young couplewho demonstrated house keepingwith electricity. Electric lamps,heaters and fans, kept the spacebright and cozy, while an electricrange, corn-popper, dish-washer,clothes washer and iron, madework more efficient. An electricphonograph and an electric foun-

tain in the gar-den provideda relaxing at-mosphere.Daily demon-strations ofhouse wiringwere given.The transcon-tinental tele-phone,wireless tele-graph, moneywashing ma-chines, barber

shop equipment, farming machin-ery and electrical wonders too nu-merous to mention were part of theextensive show. There werecabaret performances in the caféand band concerts which includedthe popular song “Hello Frisco”,written shortly after telephone com-munications had been establishedbetween New York and San Fran-cisco.

The New York publication Elec-trical Review and Western Electri-cian commented on the event inCincinnati noting that the elaborateelectric show held in Music Hall,

MUSIC HALL Marks 20one of the largest buildings of itssort in this country, had over 100exhibitors representing all of theleading manufacturers of electricalequipment and appliances. Gen-eral Electric, Union Gas and Elec-tric, Western Electric,Allis-Chalmers, Westinghouse,Walker Vehicle, Warner Elevator,Otis Elevator and many otherswere among them. An unusuallybeautiful piece of decorative workwas the ’Bursting Bomb of Jewels’which was placed in the main lobbyof Music Hall. It was designed byMr. Glossing of the General Elec-tric Company. Made of the samesparkling materials as the famous‘Tower of Jewels’ at the San Fran-cisco Exposition, it was the first ex-ample of this work seen outside ofthe Exposition. Six spot-lights ofdifferent colors illuminated themagnificent object brilliantly andbrought out its singular and deli-cate grace splendidly.

In conjunction with the showwas a special illumination of Foun-tain Square. There were four clus-ters of lights suspended highabove the square. Each clusterconsisted of a circle of eight, 18inch globes each containing a1,000 candlepower lamp. Severaldowntown buildings participated aswell. The seven story Times-Star

Building was outlined with 3,600white, red and green lights while agreat star in the center representedthe name of the paper.

The Music Hall Electric Showwas open for the week from 11a.m. until 11 p.m. Widely popular, itattracted 29,000 visitors, each pay-ing the 50 cents admission charge,a hefty amount in those days. Thesuccess of the show and the extentof public interest in it astonishedeven the most optimistic of its pro-moters. Creating heavy demand forelectrical goods of all kinds it re-sulted in an increase in business85% greater than that of 1914. Thedomestic use of electric current inand around the City had beenslight prior to Electrical ProsperityWeek as natural gas was cheapand readily available. But the excit-ing, extensive exhibits showcasingthe use of current in the ‘modern’home featuring appliances withinthe reach of the average wageearner convinced the public thatelectricity was not a luxury but anecessity for comfort and good liv-ing. Electrical Prosperity Week inMusic Hall 1915 truly began theelectric era in Cincinnati.

Jonathan Queen, ArtistWashington Park Cover

Jonathan has become well-known in the Cincinnati area as theartist whose splendid work whimsi-cally decorates the Carol AnnCarousel at Smale Riverfront Park,dedicated with great celebration onMay 16, 2015. His delightful repre-sentations of animal characters en-joying 16 of Cincinnati’s parks and16 iconic landmarks are a personaltribute to Cincinnati’s history. A na-tive of Lexington, Ky., he began hisart education at Eastern KentuckyUniversity and transferred to theUniversity of Cincinnati’s College ofDesign, Architecture, Art and Plan-ning where he earned a Bachelorof Fine Arts degree. Influenced by

the styles of such Greats as Rem-brandt and Vermeer, his style is re-alistic, narrative still life. Originallyworking with vintage toys,Jonathan shifted his process toone of creating his own sculptedcharacters in plastiline clay. Photo-graphing landscapes at just theright time of day to achieve the de-sired lighting; painting the scenesusing the photographs; placing thephotographed animal creationswithin the landscape---these arethe principal stages of his method.Preliminary sketches and smallpainted studies of each scene areamong the many steps required tocreate the final work.

talgia for the represented parks,Jonathan said that “children canthink ‘I want to go there. I want toexperience that park’.” And go they

2012, the painting is a gargantuandepiction of fruit and vegetables,picked at the peak of perfection.The brilliant use of lighting tech-nique and vivid color palette ener-gize the city scape.
