THE UNFINISHED SCHOOL STAIRS ACCIDENT

In a shocking incident, a 10-year-old boy fell three storeys from a staircase in his school and slipped intoa coma.

According to his mother, who communicated through an interpreter, Michael was coming down from thesecond floor of the school after school was over on January 25. He lost his balance and fell all the way tothe basement. Had there been banisters or even some temporary barricade, this wouldn’t have happened.

When contacted, the school’s founder-principal R Sandhu said that Michael was sliding down the hand-railof a staircase after school and that was how he fell. “The staff rushed him to hospital, even gave two unitsof blood for transfusion. We took all the care we could,” she claimed. But when asked if the school wouldpay the hospital bill since the accident occurred in the school, Sandhu said the staircase had been safeeven before. “We only put in some extra grills to provide additional protection,” she said.

Ever since he was rushed to the hospital by the school staff, Michael has been put on expensive lifesupport and other critical treatment besides costly diagnostics. Hospital officials say they have not askedanyone for payment yet, but a provisional bill runs to Rs.1.30 lakh already. The boy’s mother says theschool had initially agreed to foot the bill. “But, now they say they can get us a loan if we are prepared togive post-dated cheques,” she said.

Michael’s father Zorin is a clerk at an oil company in Noida. Nidhi says their finances are strained alreadywith the fees for their three children. Surprisingly, the school has not even informed the police about theaccident. District police chief Piyush Mordia said, “We cannot investigate the matter as nobody has fileda report.”
