Drawing together 20 artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, their The Easter bunny and other animals all handmade are on display and ready for your loved ones to take home and enjoy. iffering ideas and perspectives on nationhood coexist within this timely thematic show. Showcasing the common sensibilities of satire, larrikinism and resistance so as to present a broad exploration of race, place and belonging, Just Not Australian interrogates what it means to be Australian at this challenging point in time. This exhibition was developed just prior to the official 250th anniversary celebrations for Captain Cook’s first voyage to Australia. This is an opportunity to engage critically with this moment in Australia’s colonial history and to examine the meaning of ‘arrival’ as a continuum within this country that has seen ongoing immigration historically and contemporaneously.Artists include Abdul Abdullah, Hoda Afshar, Tony Albert, Cigdem Aydemir, Liam Benson, Eric Bridgeman, Jon Campbell, Karla Dickens, Fiona Foley, Gordon Hookey, Richard Lewer, Archie Moore, Vincent Namatjira, Nell, Joan Ross, Tony Schwensen, Raquel Ormella, Ryan Presley, and artistic duo Soda Jerk.Just Not Australian was curated by Artspace and developed in partnership with Sydney Festival and Museums & Galleries of NSW. The exhibition is touring nationally with Museums & Galleries of NSW. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.REBECCA WILSON: MYTH-MAKING HEROES AND VILLAINSIn 2010, Forbes-born, Hill End-based artist and writer Rebecca Wilson embarked on comprehensive research and a creative journey to reveal the lesser-known stories of the Central West, with a particular focus on the remote town of Hill End. Her findings resulted in two powerful series, A Portrait of Landscape and Time in Hill End: Myth-Making, Heroes and Villains and Kate Kelly: Sister of an Outlaw, both of which encourage viewers to question who are the heroes and who are the villains in Australia’s recorded history.

EXHIBITIONS continued....Wilson explained, “Mythology is one traditional educational tool of collected stories about culture, tradition, lessons to be learned, social guidelines to follow, heroes and villains, good and evil, and these myths demonstrate our human capacity to build belief systems, perceptions and histories which may or may not be true.” A Portrait of Landscape and Time in Hill End: Myth-Making, Heroes and Villains was first exhibited at Leichhardt Library, Sydney, in 2018 and then travelled to Grenfell Art Gallery and Gang Gang Gallery in Lithgow in 2019. The series covers early settlement, including the 1824 Bathurst War, women and racism on the Goldfields, Chinese bushranger Sammy Poo and the legacies of artists Jean Bellette and Donald Friend, and is interwoven with biographical content such as marrying a fifth-generation local of Wiradyuri heritage and confronting mortality during a life-threatening illness. Wilson's Kate Kelly: Sister of an Outlaw, charts the life of the sister of infamous bushranger Edward (Ned) Kelly. During her research, Wilson discovered that her family had employed Kate Kelly as a domestic servant at Cadow Station, located outside Forbes, NSW. Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is delighted to present the majority of A Portrait of Landscape and Time in Hill End: Myth-Making, Heroes and Villains and several paintings from Kate Kelly: Sister of an Outlaw. Both series, accompanied by illustrated catalogues, investigate the accuracy of the portrayal historical events while delving into the human condition. A BRAG exhibition.CASEY CHEN: LAZY DYNAMITEEmerging Sydney-based ceramic artist Casey Chen’s practice references historical illustrations from an eclectic mix of folklore, mythology and pop culture. For the National Art School 2020 Grad Show, Chen drew upon imagery and motifs from the archetypal tales of the four great classic novels of Chinese literature: Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, Water Margin and Dream of the Red Chamber. His resulting works are both a self-exploration and an homage to the rich and enduring history of Chinese porcelain craft and Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Blending childhood nostalgia with long-standing East Asian ceramic traditions, Chen applies his imagery to hand-thrown plates and vases, which are then fused with geometric patterns from traditional sources. The result is a cultural pastiche, and a dynamic conversation between traditional craft and contemporary perspective. The exhibition title Lazy Dynamite refers to the fickle nature of ceramics and the process between the periods of feverish making and the slow times in between. Chen graduated from the National Art School in Sydney last December with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree majoring in ceramics, and was the recipient of the annual Harvey Galleries National Art School Exhibition award. A BRAG Foyer Exhibition.
