Staying Alive … Elicitation question ~ two tubs

Where has the extra ‘stuff’ come from?

Only rain water is added to the growing tree over 5 years. There is the same amount of soil as there was, but the tree has grown big.

How plants work Germination and growth – materials and

energy (seed and cells) Photosynthesis – production of food and

oxygen (leaves) Growth and transport (stem and roots) Reproduction and life cycle (flowers)

Plants & energy

Click two of the following, which are sources of ENERGY for a plant to grow

Carbon dioxide and water  38% Minerals taken up from the soil  40% Sunlight through photosynthesis  90% Glucose and oxygen through respiration  26%

%ages are for a group of 100 trainee primary teachers on entry to ITE, having obtained a ‘C’ or better at GCSE, usually two or three years previously.

Photosynthesis The next three slides provide a rather different

holistic view of photosynthesis. Emphasis is on the role of oxygen, released

during photosynthesis and used during respiration.

We focus too much on the role of biomass (the fuel) in carrying energy – it is the system, the fuel/oxygen system that stores the energy.

Before you complicate things with too much detail, make sure your pupils understand how plants work:

Why do they spread their leaves? .. and their roots?
