3 North Edinburgh Shore Walks As you walk, run, cycle or drive along the shore-line of the Forth, you may not realise how many historic and interesting places you are passing, both out in the Forth estuary and on the land. From Cramond to Granton and beyond to Newhaven, people have loved, lived, fought and died. Leaflet produced by History Hub in conjunction with Power to the People Social History Group Spring 2017. 1. Cramond to Silverknowes (Bus 41 to Cramond Road North and walk down Cramond Glebe Road) More details of Roman and other remains found at Cramond Kirk can be found in leaflets 1 . If the tide is going out, cross to Cramond Island to see wartime fortifications and look on a clear day to Inchmickery and Inchkeith Islands and the Cow and Calves and Oxcar lighthouse as well as the 3 bridges spanning the Forth. Inchcolm Island with its medieval abbey can be visited 2 . Go along the beach or Promenade (Silverknowes Esplanade) eastwards to the Boardwalk Beach Café 3 (T) and up to the roundabout. Take Silverknowes Road (up to the bus terminus on Silverknowes Parkway - 16, 27, 29 and 37 buses) or continue along Lauriston Farm Road past Toby’s Carvery (T) and round to Lauriston Castle and Gardens 4 (T) T = Toilets when site open. Silverknowes to Gasometer (Bus to Silverknowes Parkway - 16, 27, 29 and 37 buses and walk down S. Road to Marine Drive) From the Boardwalk Beach Café (T) go right (East) along Marine Drive or on Silverknowes Esplanade. Pass Almond House Lodge (a hostel), the Edinburgh Caravan Club site, and the 1832 Muirhouse Mansion, which gave the area of Muirhouse its name, and the Georgian Craigroyston (now Akbar) House on turning onto West Shore Road. In living memory Gypsies or Travellers used to gather near the shore, hence the name given to the brae (slope/hill) down to the shore here. Pause near the Business Centre where on 5th May 1544 the English Earl of Hertford stormed ashore before sacking Edinburgh and Leith. Up the cycle path pass the medieval walled garden and doocot of the lost Granton Castle 5 . Past the round Gasometer and Caroline Park House (private), Scottish Gas and the old Coal Gas Works station on your left and Morrisons (T) on your right. (Buses 24, 38 or 8,16, 32) 3. Scottish Gas HQ to Granton Square and Newhaven Buses 24,38 or 8 16,32 to West Granton Road near Scottish Gas HQ) On West Granton Rd pass some small shops and a deli and then Lidl (T) and the United Wire Buildings. Turn into Granton Park Avenue to see the renovated Madelvic House - the UK’s first purpose built car factory (opened 1898 factory still derelict) now a community hub 6 . On the main road pass William Waugh (who recycle and depollute old cars) to Granton Square. Look north at Granton Harbour. It had the world’s first roll-on, roll-off train ferry, fishing fleets and coal exports now part flats, part Marina (jointly managed by the Royal Forth and Forth Corinthian Yacht Clubs) Left along West Harbour Road see the former Customs House and training/ supply Lighthouse. Look right at the Army Reserve Centre, formerly a hotel where Queen Victoria had coffee on her first trip to Scotland, and at cottages built for harbour and railway workers between 1835 and 1844. Follow this road to Newhaven 7 or get a bus home.
