1 Kings1:13 Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?

David was confined to a sick bed;He knew nothing of Adonijah’s treachery.

When a situation arises, and the leader does nothing, somebody will do something wrong.

There was a power vacuum in Israel because King David was sick and dying.

He placed no one in charge.

6

David was a procrastinator. He was too sick and feeble to rule;

He knew that Solomon should succeed him;He had told Bathsheba that he would.

But, he’s done nothing about it.

Nathan knew that David would need more of a prod than just Bathsheba speaking.

14 Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.

David need not know that they were working together to prod him to action.

Nathan would come in as if unexpectedly.

This was not a plot against David; it was a plot to save him and the Kingdom from great harm.

15 And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king. 16 And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?

17 And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. 18 And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:

Adonijah had snuck and declared himself king, while David was sick.

19 And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.

Adonijah threw a big party and invited just the people who would be on his side.

He even had a pet priest.Adonijah had some strong backers,

But David had God on his side.

20 And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.

David loved Bathsheba and her son Solomon above all others.

His procrastination had put their lives in danger.

It was certain that Adonijah would have executed anyone who might take the throne from him.

Customarily in the ancient Near East a new monarch would purge his political enemies when he came to power, as Solomon did later (2:13-46).

22 And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in. 23 And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

Nathan was the prophet of God on a mission from God, but he loved and respected David.

Years before when God told Nathan to rebuke the king, Nathan was fearless in doing so.

But that didn’t lesson his love and respect.

24 And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? 25 For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.

15

26 But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called. 27 Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?

Nathan knew that David had not appointed Adonijah to be his successor.

But he was being tactful and diplomatic in talking with the King of Israel.

16

Rather than reminding David of his promise regarding Solomon which might have annoyed the king who may not have wanted many people to know of his choice, Nathan diplomatically asked David if he had planned the present circumstances. The prophet left the initiative with David rather than putting him on the defensive.

Let us have no vacuums in the church.

1 Corinthians 12 27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased Him.

It takes the entire church working together, using our God-given gifts for us to do the Will of God.

1 Timothy 4 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, …
