Jeroboam never lived righteously.

He never met the conditions for God to sustain his dynasty.

He tried to sustain himself.

Dan and Bethel

Told the people not to go to Jerusalem.

1 Kings 13 1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the Word of the LORD unto Bethel (God told him to go.): and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. 2 And he cried against the altar in the Word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee. God’s Words

He could have repented, but God knew that he would not.

This man’s prophecy is one of the most remarkable in Scripture because it predicted the name and actions of a king who would not appear on the scene for 290 years. Josiah, who reigned from 640 to 609 B.C., fulfilled this prophecy just as the man of God predicted (2 Kings 23:15-20). BKC

God’s Word will never fail.

The passage of time means nothing to Almighty God.

Josiah demolished the Bethel altar built by Jeroboam and slaughtered the false priests there. A sign was often given in prophecies of this kind when the fulfillment would take place many years later. The man of God predicted that the sign, a miracle to verify the prophecy, would be performed then. The sign, he said, was that the altar would split apart that very day.

Hebrews 10 35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. 36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the Will of God, ye might receive the promise.

Impatience will cost us the Promise. When anyone stops believing in God’s Words,

he loses what The Lord has said.

Faith waits on God with patience.

3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. 4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

God protected His prophet.

5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the Word of the Lord.

A sign of what would come, 290 years in the future.

They didn’t know it would be that long; I’m sure they expected it in their lifetime,

if it happened at all.

But God had a Plan.

6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Entreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

King Jeroboam had just commanded his soldiers to lay hold on the prophet; no doubt

to have him killed for the prophecy.

Many people don’t like the Word of the Lord.

They get mad and talk bad.

Backsliders

But the man of God means no one any harm.

He would heal them, if he could.

But he must speak the Words of Truth, as God gives him.

He can’t sugar coat it.

7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

Do you think he meant this kindly?

I doubt it.Proverbs 23 6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: 7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: 9 For so was it charged me by the Word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

God was protecting His prophet with His Word.

God told him to leave. As long as he obeyed, he would be protected.

13

10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.

He started well, obeying God.

God said leave, and he left.

11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.

And old prophet living in the center of King Jeroboam’s wickedness.

There was a reason that God didn’t call him to take the message to King Jeroboam.

He had grown lazy and satisfied with life in that place.

We must not grow complacent in this world’s sin and wickedness.

It can creep up on us, and we accept it without thinking about it.

Page 16: 1 kings 13a a true prophet

16

The world has a skewed view of what’s okay.

We know better.

Don’t slide into acceptance of the world’s values.

Page 17: 1 kings 13a a true prophet

17

The world insists that it’s abusive to spank your children.

God say that you hate them if you don’t.

The world says it’s desirable to kill an unborn child, if it’s not convenient to have it.

God says you shall not murder.

2 Corinthians 6 17-18 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

The world’s standards and values are unclean.

Do not be deceived by any of it.

God’s Way is the only right way.
