Dominic College Director of Science K10 Page 1 DIRECTOR OF SCIENCE K-10 PURPOSE OF THE ROLE The purpose of the role of Director of Science is to advance Dominic College’s vision for excellence in Science through a strong continuum of teaching and learning across the College and high engagement of students in the College’s programs. The Director of Science K-10 gives expression to the College’s mission and vision by leading the development and implementation of a student-centred Science curriculum and co-curriculum that is accessible, challenging and an expression of the Salesian ethos. The Director of Science K-10 leads the implementation of innovative Science teaching and learning across the K-10 continuum. The Director of Science K-10 has overall responsibility for the development of the Science curriculum across the College. 1. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY The Director of Science K-10 is responsible to the Director of Teaching and Learning K-10 and accountable to the College Principal. They are a key member of the 7-10 Curriculum Team and liaise closely with the K-2 and 3-6 Teaching & Learning Coordinators regarding issues pertaining to curriculum development. The Director of Science K-10 supervises and manages the members of the 7-10 Science faculty in their various roles and hence accountable to the Coordinator of Teaching and Learning 7-10. In conjunction with the K-2, 3-6 and 7-10 Coordinators of Teaching and Learning, they set goals and action plans directly linked to the College’s Strategic and Operational Plan. They actively support the K-2, 3-6 and 7-10 Coordinators of Teaching and Learning in their roles in the development of Science. 2. OF THE MISSION OF THE COLLEGE & SALESIAN ETHOS The Director Science K-10 will: Be familiar with the Don Bosco story and use this story and its contemporary meaning in day- to-day professional experiences. Know the Salesian values and actively infuse these in all situations within the College community.

• Establish strong supportive relationships with members of the College community within clear boundaries.

• Support the religious and spiritual life and activities of the College and contributes to these where possible.

• Demonstrate behaviours of service, care and loving kindness towards students, teachers, parents and colleagues.

• Adopt an attitude of cheerfulness and positive outlook with the College community.

3. ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

3.1 Develops, maps and leads the implementation of the K-10 Science Curriculum.

• Leads the development and documentation of a shared philosophy of the teaching and learning of Science within the context of the College.

• Analyses the needs of students and designs a framework of curriculum delivery according to student needs.

• Coordinates staff in establishing, developing and reviewing the K-10 scope and sequence for Science using the Australian Curriculum.

• Oversees 7-10 staff in their programming of Science classes and liaises with the K-2 and 3-6 Coordinators regarding their coordination of staff in relation to the programming and teaching of Science.

• Ensures the integration of Christian values and the charism of the Salesians of Don Bosco throughout the Science Curriculum.

• Ensures that all curriculum documents are created, managed, shared and stored through the use of digital technology.

• Directs and supports staff in their evaluation and review of curriculum.

• Collaborates and liaises with the K-2, 3-6 and 7-10 Coordinators of Teaching and Learning to shape and confirm Science curriculum priorities.

• Leads the 7-10 Science Faculty in exploring and applying the effective use of contemporary pedagogies across the curriculum.

• Ensures staff design and implement effective assessment and reporting practices, within College policy and procedures.

• Keeps abreast of national and international trends in the development of Science

3.2 Oversees the development, implementation and review of the College’s Co-curricular Science program.

• Oversees, supervises and manages the College’s Science enrichment and extension program.

• Works with students, staff and parents to ascertain the needs and interests of students that can be supported by the College’s Science co-curricular program.

• Supports students and teachers in the development and timetabling of co-curricular Science opportunities, especially in Science Week.

• Encourages teachers to seek external opportunities beyond the College for their students to engage in challenging Science experiences.

• Works with staff to develop student leadership opportunities within Science and supports teachers to work specifically to support student initiatives in Science.

• Supports the development of the College community and House culture through the incorporation of House Science and academic activities.

3.3 Leads and supports the Science staff in developing and implementing effective classroom pedagogies.

• Oversees the professional learning program of the 7-10 Science Faculty and both leads and supports the professional learning of K-6 teachers in Science.

• Supports teachers in the collection, use and analysis of data to inform, implement and evaluate teaching and learning in Science.

• Develops with staff, approaches to differentiation of the curriculum to cater for the full range of student abilities and needs.

• Encourages and supports staff to design and implement innovative learning experiences in Science.

• Works with staff to extend gifted and talented students, including gifted disabled students.

• Supports staff in their efforts to experiment and innovate with pedagogies in Science.

• Undertakes an appropriate teaching and/or team teaching role in the College.

3.4 Develops, leads and supports a cohesive 7-10 Science Faculty that plans, cooperates and collaborates in the shared responsibility for the development of Science and supports the K-6 Coordinators and teachers in the shared responsibility for the development of Science .

• Collaborates with the Director of Teaching and Learning K-10 in the implementation of recommendations to develop Science.

• Creates regular opportunities for the 7-10 Faculty and the K-6 staff through their Coordinator to dialogue, plan and reflect on the development of Science.

• Collaborates with the 7-10 Science Faculty staff to develop a plan for the development of the Faculty and the teaching and learning of Science at the College.

• Drafts, implements and reviews policy and various guidelines in relation to Science.

• Creates a culture amongst the teachers of Science K-10 of cooperation, commitment and creative problem solving.

• Coordinates the activities of Science K-10 delegating responsibilities across teachers and coordinators.

• Develops a K-10 annual calendar for Science and in conjunction with the K-2, 3-6 and 7-10 Teaching and Learning Coordinators who overlay this into the College calendar.

• Seeks ways to recognise and celebrate the work of staff with students and their commitment to advancing Science within the College.

3.5 Oversees the effective management of the resources and budget of the Science Faculty.

• Liaises with the Director of Teaching and Learning K-10, Deputy Principal and Principal regarding the human resource framework for Science.

• Manages and supervises the work of the Science Laboratory Technician.

• Plans and oversees the annual Science budget to ensure a balance of resources across the areas according to student need and College priorities.

• Oversees the management, use and equitable access to and sharing of designated Science facilities and spaces by teachers and students.

• Liaises with the College’s Director of Resources and Business Manager to ensure the effective maintenance of designated and dedicated Science facilities and spaces.

• Maintains a cost effective approach to the purchase and replacement of materials and equipment.

• Maintains an assets register of Science specific equipment.

3.6 Contributes to the development and affirmation of Science in the College in achieving educational outcomes for students.

• Profiles Science within the College and its communications and publications.

• Keeps the College community informed of Science opportunities.

• Develops opportunities for College stakeholders to be exposed to broader community members who use and value Science in their own lives, organisations and communities.

• Seeks opportunities for staff to showcase student work in diverse ways that both affirm and challenge students.

• Identifies and develops possible partnerships in the boarder community that support the achievement of educational goals in Science.

• Encourages staff to develop leadership opportunities for students.

3.7 Models and fosters collaborative and personal leadership within the College community.

• Models effective interpersonal communication skills, including the skills of effective listening, conflict resolution, negotiation, mediation, and constructive feedback.

• Contributes effectively to the strategic thinking of the College Curriculum Teams and to their identification, analysis and response to curriculum issues.

• Implements decisions of the Principal, College Leadership Team and Curriculum Teams, specific to the role and to the cohesive functioning of the College.

• Influences the development of school curriculum and the co-curricular program by contributing to educational discussion and debate.

• Undertakes delegated responsibilities for workplace health and safety.

• Seeks professional development opportunities so as to be competent and confident in the role and familiar with current discussion and debate.

• Is a member of, and networks with, relevant professional bodies.

• Participates as a key leader in College functions, undertaking the responsibilities delegated during such functions.

4 STANDING MEETINGS

The Director of Science K-10 has:

• 7-10 Science Team Meetings

• Individual meeting with the Director of Teaching & Learning K-10 and the Coordinator of Teaching & Learning 7-10 as required.

• Meeting with the Teaching and Learning Curriculum Team 7-10 and the Teaching and Learning Curriculum Team K-6 when appropriate.

• Scheduled meetings with the K-2 and 3-6 Teaching & Learning Coordinators.

• Attendance at K-6, 7-10 and K-10 Staff Meetings.

5 SUPERVISION AND APPRAISAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Science K-10 supervises the work of the members of 7-10 Science team and guides the K-2 and 3-6 Teaching & Learning Coordinators, in conjunction with the Director of Teaching and Learning K-10 in the area of Science. The Director of Science K-10 will undertake formative appraisal responsibilities in the College Appraisal Policy and processes.

6 BUDGET MANAGEMENT

The Director of Science K-10 is responsible for the K-10 Science Budget. They work with the Business Manager and the Director of Teaching and Learning K-10 to establish the annual budget needs and estimates. They submit budget requests as part of the annual budget development. The Director of Science K-10 is responsible for monitoring the overall expenditure of the budget.

Level 4: (Leadership Positions Secondary)

Minimum Time Release: 5 hours*

Contract Period: 4 years

Leadership Position Secondary Level 4 $9,247 per annum ($11,378 with Masters).

Role Developed: September 2015
