Mission

about polestar

Polestar Pilates is dedicated to making Pilates accessible to everyone. Since 1992 our cur-

riculum has been shaped by concepts from bio-mechanics, motor learning, communication

skills and current research to enhance the work of Joseph Pilates. We seek to encourage and

challenge our Educators and students to reach their goals in life, health and movement.

Polestar Education was founded in Sacramento California in 1992 by President Brent Anderson PhD,

PT, OCS, NCPT and co-‐founder Elizabeth Larkam MA, Feldenkrais Practitioner, NCPT. Based on local

demand, it originated as a provider of continuing education for rehabilitation specialists interested in

integrating Pilates into their practice.

In 1995, Polestar Education LLC was officially organized in Sacramento, California. Both Anderson

and Larkam continued to work in their current jobs at Anderson Physical Therapy, Sacramento, CA

and St. Francis Hospital, San Francisco, CA, respectively. In 1997, Anderson decided to pursue his

doctorate degree in physical therapy and movement science and was accepted to the University of

Miami. Polestar continued to thrive under the direction of Anderson and saw unprecedented growth

from 1998 to 2000.

In October 2000, Anderson and Larkam dissolved their partnership and Polestar continued to operate

and expand under Anderson’s direction. The curriculum is continuously reviewed and enhanced by

a committee of principal Educators. Polestar has over 30 core Educators who teach nationally and

internationally. Currently, Polestar offers its education program through a network of over 15 Pilates

studios in the USA and 9 international licensees in 28 countries.

Through the years, Polestar has collaborated with the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) and with

reputable Pilates schools in the USA to uphold the integrity of comprehensive Pilates education.

FOUNDATIONAL TRAINING

Pilates immersion (Gateway)

The Pilates Immersion (Gateway) program is designed to provide an introductory understanding

of Pilates and the Polestar approach that encourages successful, result-driven movement

experiences .

As it is derived from science-based body mechanics, Pilates offers the tools to produce efficient

exercise in a way that strengthens, rehabilitates and prevents injuries . In this program, selected

Pilates Mat and Equipment exercises are taught to provide practical and applicable knowledge

of form and sequencing techniques. It serves as a gateway to realizing the complete benefits of

accurate exercise .

Beginning with at-home study preparation, the program shifts into experimental labs for well-

rounded and collaborative learning . You will experience a variety of movement sequences

throughout the courses that can be immediately incorporated into health and fitness programs.

Gateway Pilates OnlinE3 HoursThis online training is a requirement for all who attend any of the Pilates Immersion training

courses. The online course fortifies the fundamental principles and history of Pilates, and consists

of three lectures: Pilates history and evolution, Polestar movement principles, and professional

ethics and scope of practice . Each of these sections is followed by a brief written exam online .

This course is required for the Gateway exercise courses .

is comprised of a set of four sequences using preparatory and original Pilates Mat exercises . The

exercises are explained in a lab format, with time allotted for teaching and demonstration . Online

support and practice cards are provided to each participant as a takeaway resource . Pilates

Immersion educators provide feedback directly to each participant to become proficient with the

Mat Immersion work .

pilates reformer Immersion16 HoursThis two-day Pilates Reformer experience examines how to apply Polestar Pilates Reformer

exercises through a set of four sequences totaling 18 exercises . The exercises are explained in a

lab format, with time allotted for teaching and demonstration . Practice cards are provided to each

participant as a takeaway resource . Educators provide feedback directly to each participant to

become proficient with the Reformer Immersion work.

FOUNDATIONAL TRAINING

Principles Online10 Hours

Experience and apply the theories of movement that lay the foundation for Polestar Pilates in

this prerequisite for all other Polestar courses . Using evidence-based research, you will discover

the passage ways for movement throughout the body and develop the tools to provide either

assistance for or challenge your clients in helping them achieve their goals .

Polestar Principles will bring to life your ability to understand the human body and movement

acquision, assess, problem-solve, design and modify exercise programs to meet specific needs

and abilities .

Prerequisites

• ●STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: Polestar Anatomy Course or completion of one

semester of basic anatomy/physiology or equivalent

Page 15: .1, J N 20 Catalog - Latest.pdf · riculum has been shaped by concepts from bio-mechanics, motor learning, communication skills and current research to enhance the work of Joseph

15

FOUNDATIONAL TRAINING

Polestar Anatomy8 Hours

This 8-hour course is specifically designed as an introduction to muscle skeleton anatomy for

movers and movement teachers .

Eryn Apanovitch, Assistant Professor at the University of Miami, will go through the bones, joints,

muscular contributions to movement, and vascular structures of each section of the body .

Unlike other anatomy courses, Shelly Power and Brent Anderson’s discussion on the practical

application of these movement concepts makes this a very user friendly and movement oriented

anatomy course . Relating anatomical concepts to familiar movements sharpens your intuition

while expanding your intellect .

Note: This course has required reading. You will need to purchase Trail Guide to the Body, by

Andrew Biel .

Observation, practice & Teaching Hours

In addition to attending all of the course hours and completing the homework assignments,

you must complete the required number of hours for Observation, Self-Mastery Practice, and

Apprentice Teaching (see “Required Study Hours” table in the Graduation Requirements section).

We encourage you to work with Polestar Educators, Mentors and Graduates to complete these

hours. If a Polestar teacher is not available you may complete up to 50% of your hours with a

Pilates teacher from another school; however, the best scenario is to complete all hours with

a Polestar practitioner for continuity as different schools have different variations of exercises,

breathing, equipment set up etc. and we want to avoid any potential confusion.

the comprehensive coursework incorporates

Polestar’s comprehensive tuition includes 12 hours of private mentorship with a Polestar Educator

or Mentor. These sessions are meant to support the journey of each student by providing them

with sessions to reiterate the material learned in the in-person modules. These sessions can be

used in any way the student desires as long as they relate to the material. This includes homework

review, case study practice, self-mastery and practice teaching.

At a select number of Polestar Host sites, internship programs are offered that include private

mentorship as well as access to studio space for attending classes, practice teaching and didactic

sessions.

For students registering for courses at participating host sites, our admissions advisor will give

students details on the internship and offer them the choice of puttting their mentorship money

towards the host’s internship package or putting it towards the 12 hours of private mentorship.

attendance policy

• ‐Completion of ALL course material (lecture hours, contact sessions) is compulsory. If you cannot

complete a contact session for a reason approved by Polestar, you may attend the equivalent

contact session in a Polestar training program at another location. You will not be charged an

extra course fee for attending the equivalent session, but the cost of attending the equivalent

session elsewhere (i.e: travel and accommodation) shall be borne by the student.

• ‐If you miss half a day you can make up the missing section by completing the missed material

with a Polestar Educator. There will be an additional charge as this session is scheduled directly

with your Educator.

• ‐Students are expected to arrive on time for class with proper materials. An overall attendance

rate of 100% is required. Instructors may request a student to withdraw from a course or

program if absences or tardiness exceed 70%.

• ‐Students are expected to complete their training within 1 year of start date.

Students who are unable to continue classes for medical reasons or severe personal problems will

be required to take a leave of absence until they are able to return to class. Proper documentation

will be required to substantiate a student’s withdrawal (see Leave of absence)

leave of absence

Students have 12 months from their cohort start date within which to complete their training. If you

need to withdraw from training for a short period of time (1-6 months) we ask that you provide a

letter, personally or from a doctor, explaining the circumstances. If you paid the program in full,

the school will retain all payments and allow you to start with the next training course. If you are on

an installment plan, you will continue to pay on the balance of the first attempted course. Leave of

absences that are longer than 6 months will be considered a drop. Your refund will be determined

by the refund policy and will include all payments made in advance for any future training. Upon

restarting, the school will determine if you need to start fresh with a new course and pay the requisite

tuition, or if you are eligible to jump into an existing program and tuition will then be calculated

proportionately, based on the number of hours needed to complete.

procedure

Any student with a complaint or a grievance should take the following actions (and be as specific

as possible):

• To resolve personal issues, please contact the person with whom you have the grievance and

attempt to resolve the issue informally.

• To resolve issues with the Program in general, please contact your Program Administrator.

• If this is not a reasonable option, or if such an option does not remedy the situation, you have 30

days to contact Polestar Pilates by submitting a written request to the Program Administrator.

This written request should outline the issue, including all extra information pertinent to the

grievance. From here, the Program Director will reach out to all involved parties and ask those

with whom the complaint is lodged to submit a written response to the complaint. The Director

will then make an informed decision on how to respond or proceed. The Director will notify the

student in writing within 30 days of the submission of the written request.

If the matter is still not resolved, students may appeal in writing to

[email protected] to request a charge statement.
