Christ cannot be “proved”The Atheist Paradigm The Theist Paradigm

You make your choice of your basic premise BY FAITH.

Facts & Observations

4

Faith is required

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6)

A proven “Christ” no longer requires faith to be present.

Page 5: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

5

Faith with reason

Not a blind faith that follows the heart

“always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (2 Peter 3:15)

“Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”” (Matthew 16:16)

So strong are the evidences that Peter was convinced.

Lesson Objectives

Not to “prove” the Sonship of Jesus Christ,

but

To issue a call by REASON to FAITH that Jesus Christ is the Son of God,

and

To issue the warnings from God’s word concerning denying Christ

Who is Jesus Christ?

The claims that Jesus made

“I am the light of the world” (John 8:12)

“I proceeded forth and came from God.” (John 8:42)

“before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58)

“I and My Father are One.” (John 10:30)

“All things that My Father has are Mine.” (John 16:15- also John 17:10)

He repeatedly claimed to be the Son of God (Matthew 16:15-16, 26:63-66, Luke 22:69-71)

Page 8: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

Who is Jesus Christ?

More claims by Christ

Power on earth to forgive sins (Matthew 8:1-6)

Power to give life - and He showed it (John 5:21)

Authority to execute judgment (John 5:26-27)

Authority to speak for God (John 8:26, 12:49-50, 14:10-11, 24)

That He is eternal (John 17:5)

Those who have seen Him have seen God (John 8:19, 12:45, 14:9)

Comparing with Mohammed

No religious founder or teacher has ever madethe claims that Jesus made of Himself

The Koran says of Mohammed that

he was “naught but a messenger”

he was “no more than a human apostle”

he confessed he was sinful, and was even rebuked by God

Page 10: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

10

Comparing with Buddha

Simply claimed to be an “enlightened” man - not the bearer of light

Did not claim that his teachings represented an absolute standard

Did not claim to bring salvation to any man - there is no personal existence in the afterlife

Acknowledged how difficult his path of enlightenment was, and how fallible he remained

11

Reactions

When confronted with the Person of JesusChrist, one is forced to take a position.

No ground for neutrality (Matthew 12:30)

It caused division (John 7:43, 9:16, 10:19)

Evokes powerful emotions that subverts family ties (Matthew 10:21, 35-36)

It caused debates and arguments (John 6:52).

Page 12: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

12

Reactions

The Jews considered it a great blasphemy and sought to kill Him for His claims (John 5:18, 10:33-36, 19:7)

The Jews mocked Him for His claims (Matthew 27:43)

“. . . . You, being a Man, make yourself God.” (John 10:33)

What would your reaction be?

13

The Alternatives

The alternative positions are:

Jesus never existed. This is pure fable.

It was all a fabrication by Jesus Himself and His close disciples.

Jesus was deluded about Himself.

The fable evolved over the centuries by His over-enthusiastic followers.

He is Who He claims to be.

Page 14: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

14

Jesus Never Existed?

Jesus has been widely recognised as a true historical character. No historian has challenged this fact.

The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, a non-believer, wrote about Him as a historical person.

Our calendar system (B.C. and A.D.) takes His existence as fact.

Page 15: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

15

Jesus Never Existed?

“These independent [non-Christian] accounts

prove that in ancient times even the opponents

of Christianity never doubted the historicity of

Jesus, which was disputed for the first time and

on inadequate grounds at the end of the 18th,

during the 9th and 20th centuries.”

(Encyclopaedia Britannica)

Page 16: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

16

All A Fabrication by Jesus?

This would make Him a liar which is totally inconsistent with what He taught about truth.

No one can logically - and consistently - speak truth built upon lies. Human fabrications must inevitably reveal contradictions

Inconsistencies and contradictions would have been exploited fully by the powerful enemies of Jesus - yet none of these charges exist

Page 17: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

17

Jesus was deluded?

Some in Jesus’ time have already labeled Him a madman to make such preposterous claims (John 7:20, 8:48, 10:19-21)

How can a madman consistently teach a message of the highest moral standard? How can a madman’s teachings produce peace of mind in those who follow them?

Jesus’ teachings are clear, consistent and logical. He reasoned with a wisdom that could not be challenged. (Matthew 7:28-29, John 7:46)

Page 18: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

18

Fabricated by His followers?

Modernists claim:

Jesus was a prophet who proclaimed the kingdom of God

Belief in His resurrection arose sometime later after His crucifixion

Belief of His return developed even later on, and hence began the belief that He was a Messiah and Son of God

Page 19: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

19

Fabricated by His followers?

This belief was then projected retroactively on to the historical Jesus

Later still, believers developed ideas about a God-man, the virgin birth, the incarnation, etc - according to their expectations of who He was

Above represents the “modern view”amongst liberals of who Jesus is

Page 20: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

20

But . . .

It would take a lot of geniuses spanning centuries to weave a fable that is not only consistent within the New Testament, but also with the Old Testament record.

A study of the earliest copies of the New Testament reveal they have been well-preserved over the centuries, free from doctoring

Would the church witness for their beliefs through martyrdom?

Fabricated by His followers?

Page 21: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

21

He is Who He says He is

Weighing the alternatives

By process of elimination, this alternative is the only viable one remaining

Since there is a God, is it so inconceivable that He would reach out to man through His Son?

Since the Bible can be believed, is it so inconceivable that it presents the truth to us?

And strong evidences exist . . . .

The Witnesses

Page 29: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

29

The Evidence of Witnesses

“For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.” (2 Peter 1:16)

Eyewitness accounts from John (1 John 1:1-3, John 19:35, 21:24)

30

The Evidence of Witnesses

Confirmation by several Jewish and secular accounts about Jesus

Besides witnesses from amongst His followers, there were also several witnesses who followed but

fell away from Him (John 6:66)

If the NT record was untrue in any part (eg of Jesus’ miracles), there would have been some protest before the living witnesses to the recorded events

31

The Evidence of Witnesses

Witnesses in positions of power

The powerful enemies of Jesus and His church had abundant resources at their disposal to prove fraud and end a fable from growing and threatening the Jewish system and eventually the entire

Roman Empire

32

The Evidence of Witnesses

“Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.” (Luke 23:8)

“For the king, before whom I also speak freely, knows these things; for I am convinced that none of these things escapes his attention, since this thing was not done in a corner.” (Acts 26:26)

34

Prophecies in the Bible

Foretelling of events before their occurrence, sometimes hundreds or thousands of years in advance (Isaiah 46:10)

Prophecies play an essential role in the Christian faith as evidence that God has spoken

“Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He” (John 13:19)

Against All Odds

Page 42: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

42

Coincidence?

Probability of one person fulfilling just 48 prophecies is estimated to be 1 in 10157 - much much worse if the number of prophecies are >200

Laws of probability dictate that such small probabilities mean an impossibility - hence, occurrence via coincidences is not a possibility to consider

Fulfillment of these prophecies are evidence of Divine purpose and plan

Page 43: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

43

By Divine Design

The advent of Jesus Christ was an event for which God had planned before the beginning of history

Jesus Christ was to come through the nation of Israel, God’s chosen people in the Old Testament

But world events in history worked in numerous but unsuccessful attempts to foil this plan

Page 44: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

44

Roadblocks

The numerous threats in Israel’s history to turn God’s people to idolatry and defile their purity

The slaughter of infants at the time of Jesus’ birth

Even the simple background of Jesus appears to be a potential barrier - how can an unknown quantity make any impact on the world?

Page 45: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

45

Prepare the way of the Lord

But Divine providence worked to prepare the way for Jesus Christ

Scattering of the Jews some centuries earlier to prepare the ground for the spread of the gospel throughout the world

Angels to herald His advent to numerous people

Divine guidance to preserve the Christ child

John the Baptist to prepare the people for His work

46

The Influence of Christ

Page 47: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

47

The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” (John 12:32)

“Jesus Christ, the greatest man who ever lived, has changed virtually every aspect of human life . . . . He is the central figure of the human race. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that one solitary life.” (Dr James Kennedy, “What if Jesus had never been born?”, 1994)

Page 48: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

48

The Influence of Christ

Can such a deluded man ever wield such a powerful influence?

Can any deception withstand the test of the wisdom of the whole world for so long?

Why would His followers be prepared to die horribly as martyrs for a fable?

The only plausible explanation:

The influence of Christ is supernaturaland originates from God.

Page 49: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

49

The Resurrection of

Jesus Christ

Page 50: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

50

Its Significance

A central message of the gospel of Christ, i.e. the Christian faith.

Whether Christianity is meaningful depends on the historicity of the resurrection of Christ (1 Corinthians 15:14-20). If not: It is all a lie (v 15)

The Christian faith is futile (v 17)

The removal of the sin of man is effected only because Christ is resurrected (v 17)

Christians are the most pitiful of all men (v 19)

Page 51: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

51

Its Significance

“And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up -- if in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 15:14-20)

Page 52: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

52

The Empty Tomb

“All the references to the empty tomb come in the Gospels, which were written for Christians who wanted to know the facts. In the public preaching, to those who were not yet convinced, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, there was an insistent emphasis on the resurrection, but not a single reference to the tomb.  For this I can see only one explanation.  There was no point in speaking of the empty tomb, for everyone -- friend and foe alike -- knew that it was empty.  The only points worth arguing about were why it was empty, and what its emptiness proved.” (J. N. D. Anderson, Christianity: the Witness of History, 1969)

Page 53: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

53

The AlternativesBut if true, it is strong evidence that Jesus spoke the truth concerning Himself.

The choices of position on this:

He did not really die but simply fainted, and then disappeared from the public.

The disciples were deluded.

The disciples stole His body away, and then claimed He has resurrected.

The authorities took His body away.

He has indeed resurrected as the Bible says so.

Page 54: 1 Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?. 2 References §“Ready with an Answer” by Dr John Ankerberg and Dr John Weldon.

54

If so, His action was calculated to deceive, totally inconsistent with what He taught. Highly improbable that such a man can wield such long-lasting supernatural influence on the world.

How could anyone merely faint from the ordeal which included a piercing of His body?

Who moved the heavy stone that blocked the tomb?

How did He slipped pass the guards watching the tomb?

Did He merely faint?

To the apostles on the Mount of Olives just before His Ascension (Luke 24:50-52, Acts 1:3-8, Mark 16:19)

To Paul on the road to Damascus (1 Corinthians 15:8, Acts 9:1-9)

Were these witnesses all deluded?

Were the disciples deluded?

They were competent witnesses

They had opportunity to know Him well, especially the twelve.

They were men of honesty and integrity - it would be inconsistent with what they stood for if they lied

Were the disciples deluded?

59

They were mentally sound, and included men who were well-educated, and able to engage in sound reasoning and write convincingly. Paul, the most prominent convert Nicodemus was a teacher of the

Jewish law (John 3:10)

Were the disciples deluded?

60

They were not simple, gullible men but included stubborn skeptics

Doubting Thomas refused to believe until he personally saw the proof (John 20:24-29)

Two disciples along the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35)

Other disciples were skeptical as well (Luke 24:11, 24:36-53)

Were the disciples deluded?

61

Paul knew the stakes involved

He had such great confidence in the fact of the Resurrection that he was prepared to stake all or nothing in his statement in 1 Corinthians 15:14-20

If untrue, he knew the better alternative was to “eat and drink for tomorrow we die” (1 Corinthians 15:32)

The basis of all this confidence: Paul personally witnessed the resurrected Christ

Were the disciples deluded?

62

A very well-woven conspiracy with so many factors beyond the control of its perpetrators - human fabrication can never be so perfect and consistent

Cannot explain the 180o change in the disciples in so short a time (50 days) - who would die for a lie?

Not only the initial disciples but the explosive growth of the church in times of strong persecution - for a lie???

Was it a conspiracy?

63

If so, the Jews or the Romans who were responsible for taking His body away only had to produce the body to put an end to the delusions.

The authorities had no logical motive to take His body away

The authorities knew the consequences of a missing body, and took precautions (Matthew27:63-66)

Were the authorities to be blamed?

“Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord?” (Paul in 1

Corinthians 9:1)

“It is quite clear that without the belief in the

resurrection the Christian faith could not have

come into being. The disciples would have

remained crushed and defeated men.” (Dr

William Lane Craig, philosopher of religion)

The Infallible Proofs

“He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs,” (Acts 1:3)

The Bible states that the proofs of Christ’s resurrection were infallible, i.e. decisive proof

How strong is the legal evidence? Will it stand cross-examination in a modern court of law?

The Legal Eagles

“There exists such overwhelming evidence, positive and negative, factual and circumstantial, that no intelligent jury in the world could fail to bring in a verdict that the resurrection story is true.” (Lord Darling, former Lord Chief Justice of England)

“Men and women disbelieve the Easter story not because of it but in spite of it.” (J N D Anderson, Dean of Law Faculty, University of London)

The Infallible Proofs

“When Professor Simon Greenleaf of Harvard Law School published his distinguished treatise on the Law of Evidence in 1842, he analysed the resurrection accounts in the Gospels. Under the rules of evidence then he concluded a Court would admit these accounts and consider their contents reliable. In my opinion that conclusion is still as valid in 1995 as it was in 1842.” (William Burns Lawless, retired justice of NY Supreme Court)

If Jesus were a mere mortal . . .

Mad-man who made such wild claims, deserving no attention at all

A morally upright man whose teachings deserve some attention

Why should His calls to sacrifice self be heeded?

We should “eat and drink for tomorrow we die”.

We are of all men the most pitiable. (1 Corinthians 15:19)

The Christless Alternative“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does

not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3:18)

“Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24)

“And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.” (Acts 3:23)

The Christless Alternative

“when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with

His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance

on those who do not know God,

and on those who do not obey the

gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be

punished with everlasting destruction from the

presence of the Lord and from the glory of His

power,” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)
