1. History of the School.

(As related to us by the first headmaster of Farrarmere Primary School, Mr. Gerald

Ebertson.)

Farrarmere Primary School.

The Early Days.

I was advised in October 1975, by the Transvaal Education Department

that I had to open the Farrarmere Primary School in January 1976.

The Transvaal Education Department had decided to establish a new

English Medium Primary School to serve English speaking pupils who lived

in Farrarmere, Alphen Park and Atlasville.

The new school was to be housed in the building occupied by Laerskool

Brentwood Park. A new school was to be erected in Farrarmere to serve

the Afrikaans speaking community in the same suburbs.

The parents from Laerskool Brentwood Park objected to the move and

the Transvaal Education Department then allocated the new school

building to the English speaking community.

The suburb of Farrarmere was named after Sir George Farrar, a mining

magnate from Bedford in the United Kingdom. He had financial interests

in some of the mines in the Benoni area eg, Modder B. That was at the

end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Centuries.

Sir George lived in Bedfordview and his homestead now houses the

St. Andrew’s School for Girls.

Presumably, Bedfordview was named after Bedford in the United

Kingdom.

I designed the school badge and incorporated the castle in Bedford. The

blue spots in the surround represent the 5 dams in Benoni.

In naming the sports houses for Farrarmere Primary I initially chose 3;

Farrar (after Sir George Farrar), Bedford (after Bedford in the U.K) and

Howard (Farrar’s wife’s maiden name.)

It was at a later stage during the leadership of Mr. R. Allison, that a

fourth sports house was introduced. The sports house, Woburn, was

named after Woburn Abbey, in the village of Woburn. This abbey

continues to be the home of the Dukes of Bedford, spanning over 450

years.

Page 4

Sir George Farrar was also responsible for naming some of the streets in

Benoni e.g., Bedford, Howard, Turvey and others.

Farrar often rode from Bedfordview on horseback to inspect the work

being done at the mines.

The school motto, ‘INVICTUS’, was chosen by me after reading the poem

by Williams Ernest Henley. Invictus is the Latin word for Invincible-

Unconquered.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishment the scroll,

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

Since the school opened on the 7th of January 1976, with 559 enrolled pupils, [the

official opening was in October 1977], Farrarmere Primary School has had the

pleasure of having 3 past headmasters and 1 current headmistress in charge of the

school. Each has served the school with determination in making the school a success,

ceaseless effort in providing the learners of Farrarmere Primary with the best

education possible and when their goals seemed unattainable, they each displayed

their ‘own unconquerable soul’ in making those goals a reality.

• Mr. Gerald Ebertson served the school from 1976 - 1989

• Mr. Ray Allison served the school from 1990 - 2000

• Mr. Mike Kruger served the school – Acting 2000 Principal 2001 - 2006

• Mrs. Fiona Stansfeld was elected headmistress of the school in 2007, and

continues to serve Farrarmere Primary School in that role.

Page 5

Each Headmaster/Headmistress has had a particular vision for Farrarmere Primary

and has made his/her own personal contribution to the growth and success of the

school.

Mr. G. Ebertson had a love of all things cultural and historic, and

during his time at Farrarmere Primary, the school hall was erected as

well as the infamous Paganini Statue that stands tall outside the school

offices.

Mr. R. Allison focused on the sport at the school and in his time at

Farrarmere Primary the sports pavilion and grandstands were erected

and continue to serve our school and, in fact, all the schools in Benoni

for various sporting functions which we host.

Mr. M. Kruger had a love for the academics and it was his dream to

see a media centre and computer centre erected at the school. These

dreams were fulfilled during his time at the school.

Mrs. F. Stansfeld, our current Headmistress, a teacher and trained

Psychologist, has a passion to see Early Child Development instilled at

the school. It is her passion for this that has seen the current erection of

a Nursery School on the Farrarmere Primary School grounds. Ground

was broken for this project in July 2008, and the nursery school was

officially opened on Wednesday, 15th April 2009. If you meet Mrs.

Stansfeld you will realise that this is just one of her many goals for the

school. The school Administrative Block has been re-furbished and

given a fresh, new look. Mrs. Stansfeld and the school Governing

Body have also started the implementation of Inter-Active White

Boards in the classrooms. This marvel in technology will see the

children learning in a stimulating and multi-sensory way.

Each of our outstanding School Leaders has made, and continues to make Farrarmere

Primary School the ALL-ROUNDED school it is today.

Page 6

2. Academic Information:

Mrs. Fiona Stansfeld is our Headmistress, appointed in 2007.

Mrs. Stansfeld is assisted by the Executive Committee which comprised of:

Mr. Werner Grobbelaar – Deputy Principal

Mrs. Carmel Reitz – Head of Department – Senior Phase.

Mr. Johan Koekemoer – Head of Department - Discipline.

Mrs. Philippa Mocke – Head of Department – Intersen Phase.

Mrs. Marilyn Docherty – Head of Department – Foundation Phase.

English is the medium of instruction. We are both proud of our standard of education

and of the impact it has made in the lives of the many children that have been a part of

our school family through the years.

The pupils are continually assessed in the classrooms including written, oral, group

and individual work. There is no formal testing in the Foundation Phase, rather year-

round continual assessment. Pupils from Grade 4-7 are assessed in the 8 learning

areas which count towards their final term mark. Cycle Tests are written each term

and exams are written bi-annually in Grades 4-7.

Punctuality:

Punctuality is of great importance at Farrarmere Primary School. Pupils must be at

school on time.

School hours are as follows:

Monday – Thursday: 07:40 – 13:45

Friday: 07:40 – 13:00

These times apply to Grades 1-7

(Note: Grade 1 children will finish school at 12:00 for the first month of Term 1, to

help them in their acclimatising process.)

Extra-mural schedules are issued at the beginning of each Term.

Page 7

Grade R:

There is a Grade R class available on the school premises, as well as classes for the

3,4 and 5 year old children. We have integrated with the renowned Benoni Nursery

School in Farrarmere, which celebrates its 50th Birthday in 2009, a remarkable

milestone by any account. Mrs. Lindsey Rule will continue to be the Headmistress of

the Nursery School; a role she has served for a number of years, and hopefully, will

continue to serve for many years to come!

The children will be given the opportunity of experiencing Farrarmere Primary

School life to the full and will be involved in all school activities. They will also

enjoy the use of all facilities available at the school.

In Grade R they will become familiar with the school rules, activities, lay-out etc. In

this way the challenges of Grade 1 and the stress involved in having to start at a new

school are alleviated.

The Foundation Phase: Grades 1-3

The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) has been implemented in Grades 1-3 and

is set according to Policy. There are 3 learning areas involved – Literacy, Numeracy

and Life Skills. We are also following the newly implemented “Foundations for

Learning”

With the NCS, learners acquire the knowledge, skills and values needed to start their

Formal Education. Our highly skilled teachers have been trained using the National

Curriculum Statement, so you can be rest assured that your child is receiving the best

possible education at Farrarmere Primary School.

Our Foundation Phase learners also receive lessons in Media, Computers, Music,

Beginners Zulu and Physical Education, all developed by our Specialist Teachers and

Sports Academy Coaches.

Our Foundation Phase Teachers are continually given the opportunity for further

education and have been on a wide range of teaching courses including Thrass, Funda

Fun Education and Assertive Discipline, but to name a few. We believe that our

teachers need to be kept informed about any new teaching strategies that will be

beneficial to your child.

Page 8

The Intermediate Phase: Grades 4-5 and

The Senior phase: Grades 6-7.

The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) has been implemented in Grades 4-7.

There are 8 learning areas in this phase:

 - Language, Literacy and Culture (LLC-English; LLC-Afrikaans)

 - Mathematics (Maths)

 - Natural Sciences (NS- Science and Biology)

 - Social Sciences (SS-History: SS-Geography)

 - Economic and Management Sciences (EMS)

 - Arts and Culture (A&C includes Music)

 - Life Orientation (LO)

 - Technology (TECH)

As a part of the NCS, learners also attend weekly Computer Literacy classes in our

Computer Centre, Media Information Skills in the Media Centre and Physical

Education classes, headed by our qualified Sports Scientists and specifically designed

to include, target and improve all Gross Motor Skills.

Our Intermediate Phase and Senior Phase teachers are also continually given the

opportunity for further education and have been on a wide range of teaching courses.

Facilities:

We believe that as a school it is of great importance to offer our learners the best

possible Educational Facilities and Equipment.

Our Facilities rate amongst the best in Benoni and are continually upgraded with the

aim to keeping up with the changes in technology and society.

Our Computer/I.T Centre, Media Centre, Music Centre, Technology Centre, Science

Laboratory, Art Room and Sports Academy are all equipped to provide the learners

with the latest learning programmes and skills needed to enhance their Primary

School Education.

The Grade 6 and 7 pupils receive specialised Art Lessons in a fully equipped Art

Room, where art techniques and art theory are taught.

Our Science Laboratory is run by our resident Micro-Biologist, who provides the

learners with opportunities to conduct their own experiments in our very well-

equipped Laboratory.

Page 9

Communication:

We believe that an informed parent is a happy parent; therefore the following

strategies are implemented to ensure that you as a parent are not left out of the

Farrarmere Primary School loop:

♦ A newsletter is sent home to each family, every Wednesday, without fail. This

newsletter contains information about upcoming school events, sport-related

matters, your child’s personal achievements that can be published in the

newsletter and any advertisements that you as a parent would like to place. If

your child does not give you the newsletter or loses it, then it can be viewed

on the school web-page. This web-page will also offer all school information,

activities etc. for your perusal.

Our web address is www.farrarmereprimary.co.za

♦ A school cell phone SMS system is in place for any urgent matters/messages

that need to be conveyed.

♦ Parents Evenings are held in the second term where your child’s progress may

be discussed.

♦ An appointment can be made with your child’s teacher or any member of the

Executive Committee, via the school office, as well as in the Junior Phase

through a letter written in your child’s message book.

♦ Parents also receive 4 progress reports throughout the school year.

Assembly:

Assembly is held once a week, on a Friday morning, commencing at approximately

08h00. The entire school comes together for the presentation of any certificates, the

birthdays for the week and for any announcements that need to be made.

We also have different classes performing a “class item” within the assembly, in the

form of a poem, song, dance etc.

Parents are welcome to attend any of the assemblies.

Special ‘Colours’ Assemblies are held throughout the year to present School

Colours/Merit Awards for the various sports.

Parents will be notified via a letter if their child will be receiving an award at a

Colours Assembly.

Page 10

Educational and Cultural Visits:

Each grade at Farrarmere Primary School participates in selected visits. Payment

thereof is incorporated in the school fees. The pupils either go to various locations for

example, the Johannesburg and Pretoria Zoos, The Lion and Rhino Park, The

Planetarium etc, or people come to the school to perform shows like Hooked on

Books, Haartebeespoort Snake & Animal Park etc. In Grade 5 we offer a 3 day, 2

night educational tour for the children, but this trip is optional and is paid for by the

parents.

No pupil is allowed to visit a location outside of the school without a Parental

Consent form being completed by the parent or guardian.

Aftercare Facility:

Our aftercare is privately run by Mrs. Rhoda Schmidt and her Aftercare Team safely

within the school grounds of Farrarmere Primary. This aftercare facility is offered to

any pupil at the school and is run from the time that school finishes in the day until

17h30. This aftercare is also run throughout the school holidays, except for

December, when the whole school closes down for the Christmas break.

All pupils ‘check in’ to the aftercare straight after school before they depart for their

various extra-murals. Lunch is served before the children leave with their aftercare

teacher for the various aftercare classrooms in the school. Each grade has its own

child-minder, classroom and play area within the school grounds and no intermingling

of the different grades is allowed. The children then proceed to complete any

homework requirements, although parents must accept that the After School Care

Centre is not a study/remedial centre. Homework will be supervised, but parents must

check and sign all homework books as Mrs. Schmidt and the School Management

Team believe that this is an important means of contact with your child. Children

participating in extra-murals are closely monitored to ensure that they return to their

aftercare classrooms directly after their activity has finished.

For further information about the Aftercare and its tariffs for the year, please do not

hesitate to contact Mrs Rhoda Schmidt. Her contact details are available through the

school office on (011) 849-4221/2 or cell 083 966 2332.

3. Management of the School

Governing Body:

The management of Farrarmere Primary School is vested in a Governing Body, which

is elected by the parents and staff of the school every three years under the current

regulations. It consists of the Headmistress, six parent members, three staff members

and one administrative staff member. (A Deputy Principal may be co-opted on to the

Governing Body). The Governing Body of the school is responsible for the

maintenance of the school buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment as well as the

control of school finances, the interviewing for Government Employment vacancies

and the appointment of any Governing Body employed staff members.

There is an Annual General Meeting of the parents held in the latter part of the year

where the Governing Body reports on its activities for the year. This meeting is also

where the Finances/Budget and Proposed School Fees for the upcoming year are

discussed.

The meeting is an open forum where any queries can be raised and discussed.

Notice for this meeting will be given in the weekly Newsletters leading up to the

meeting.

Mothers’ Committee:

This committee comprises of mothers who volunteer their services when serving on

the Mothers’ Committee. They offer their support at any official school functions in

the form of serving tea, providing a tuck shop and just showing their support to the

school in any way possible. They also arrange certain functions for the children, for

example, school dances, fashion shows and general entertainment.

They provide a ‘market’ where children can purchase gifts for the special occasions

in the year, such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

The mothers generally hold monthly meetings at the school to discuss their projects.

This is a wonderful committee because it enables the mothers to get to know one

another as well as the staff at the school.

Clothing Shop:

There is a clothing shop available at Farrarmere Primary School where second hand

school clothing is sold. The items are relatively inexpensive as the clothing is usually

donated by the families of the children who have either outgrown the clothing, or are

leaving the school for high school.

The clothing shop is run on a voluntary basis by our willing mothers. Details of when

the clothing shop is open are available from the school office on (011) 849-4221 and

advertised in the weekly newsletter.

Tuck Shop:

Our school tuck shop is a privately run facility, which is open on a daily basis. A

variety of hot food is available, as well as cold drinks, biltong, crisps and sweets.

Only hot food and cold drinks are sold at first break to ensure that the children are

eating something substantial before they indulge in the sweets, crisps and cold drinks

that are sold at second break and after school.

The School Management team does oversee what is sold at the tuck shop to ensure

that an all-rounded menu is available.

At the beginning of the year, all pupils will receive the official School Code of

Conduct that is to be read by both the pupils and their parents and then signed by the

parents and returned to the school office.

These school rules have been drawn up by the School Management Team and Staff of

Farrarmere Primary School and apply to the following situations:

o Whenever the pupil or parent is on the school property- before school, during

school and after school.

o At all official school events- during and after normal school hours.

o At all school events being held off the school grounds.

o At all times when the learner is dressed in the official school uniform,

A brief overview of the responsibilities of the Farrarmere Primary School learner is as

follows:

Learners MUST:

• learn;

• arrive at school on time and attend all classes on time every day;

• do all school work, including homework, within the allocated time;

• have all necessary working materials with them and kept in good order;

• respect all persons and their property;

• not use bad language, or insult other people in any way;

• behave themselves in a safe and responsible manner;

• always be clean and neat;

• always do their own work;

• protect school property;

• not damage school property, or the property of other learners;

• report anyone taking school property from the school grounds, without

permission, and must not take anything themselves;

other people, or in any way prevent other learners from being able to learn in a

safe and secure environment.

• Report any persons not abiding by the rules, values and standards of the school

and society.

The Code of Conduct also contains the definition of misconduct, the different

class of offences and their punishment and the full list of School Rules.

This document is available from the school office for you to peruse.

Page 16

6. Discipline:

Discipline at Farrarmere Primary School is a vital aspect to the way the school is run.

Emphasis is placed on positive reinforcement of good behavior, with merits and

incentives being given to the children who respect the rules of the school and abide by

them.

General behavior, completion or lack of completion of work and adhering to the

classroom rules are enforced by the class teacher. Each teacher has his/her own

classroom reward system for good behavior; however any discipline problems are

handled by the class teacher in conjunction with the instructions given by the school

discipline committee on how they would like the offence handled.

The children who do not adhere to the school rules on a continual basis are sent to the

school discipline committee, headed by Mrs. Mocke and Mr. Koekemoer, the Intersen

and Senior Phase HODs, and suitable punishment is administered. Parents are

informed of any decisions made by the Discipline Committee regarding their child

and no punishment for a severe offence will be implemented without the parent’s

consent.

10. General:

Illness at school:

If a child becomes ill or is injured at school, the parents will be notified and will need

to collect the child from the school office. Children will not be allowed to go home

alone. If the office is not able to reach you or next-of- kin, then the child will remain

in the school Sick Bay until the end of the day. Please note that according to the latest

regulations, no medication will be administered to the pupils by the school. It is for

this reason that it is imperative for parents/guardians to notify the school of any

contact detail changes to assist us in keeping the school records up to date.

Each member of staff at Farrarmere Primary School has been certified on a Level 3

Paramedic Course. This certification will be renewed every 3 years.

Absence from school:

On returning to school after being absent, a note should accompany the child -

addressed to your child’s class teacher - informing him/her of the reason for the

child’s absence from school.

If a child is absent for 2 or more consecutive days, a doctor’s note is necessary.

If a child is absent for a scheduled test or exam, a doctor’s note is required.

If a child has a communicable disease (including lice), then a clearance certificate

from your doctor or clinic is necessary before the child returns to school.

If a child is expected to be absent from school for some time, parents should notify

the class teacher via the school office, for arrangements to be made for any class work

to be caught up.

If your child is going to be absent from school for reasons other than illness, then a

letter must be written to the class teacher, or the office, informing them of your plans

and of your return date.

Extended periods of absence must be approved by Mrs. Stansfeld beforehand.

Full Attendance:

Full attendance means that the pupil has been present at school every day during the

school year.

He/She will receive a certificate of 100% attendance at the end of the school year.

Religious holidays are not counted as attendance days, but it is advisable to inform

your child’s class teacher of the religious holiday in advance.

Page 20

Civies Days:

Civvies days are held from time to time to support certain charities that the school is

involved with, for example, our annual civvies day in support of the Guide Dog

Association.

Each child may then wear the stipulated civvies clothes- provided he/she has paid the

amount specified- usually R5 or a donation of more than this is always welcomed.

Charity:

We, at Farrarmere Primary School, try to make the pupils aware that there are those

who are less fortunate than themselves and we, therefore, encourage them to

contribute to various charities that are close to our hearts, for example, ‘ our extended

family’ at Little Eden, and our beloved friends at the SPCA, but to mention a few.

Each contribution is made on a voluntary basis only, but our pupils at Farrarmere

Primary School never fail to make us proud.

Grade 7’s:

At the end of each year we bid farewell to our ‘big’ children who leave our school to

embark on their High School journey.

The Grade 7 Valedictory Service is held at the end of the year in which we as a school

celebrate their time at Farrarmere Primary School. Parents are invited to this service.

Mrs. Reitz and our Mothers’ Committee also put on our Grade 7 Farewell in

November, which is a night in which the pupils celebrate their time at the school.

Parents are welcome to come and watch the arrival of the children and to see the

magnificently decorated hall. Each year there is a different theme for the farewell and

only Mrs. Reitz and the Mothers’ Committee are privy to that information until the

invitations are sent out.

If a Grade 7 pupil is going to attend a Public High School, they must apply in the July

of their Grade 7 year.

To date, all of our pupils who have ever applied to a private High School have been

accepted and we as a school have been complimented on the firm academic, sporting

and cultural foundation we have given to our pupils. It makes us particularly proud to

hear that our learners continue to practise the morals and values instilled in them

during their time at Farrarmere Primary School.
