Environmental improvements to Lavant Street including
resurfacing and junction improvements, wider footways,
& street trees
Enhancements to Petersfield Train station forecourt.
Why is this important?
Petersfield station is an important gateway for visitors to
the South Downs National Park. Improvements to the
station forecourt can make sure it is an attractive entry
point, and provide better information for rail and bus
passengers about nearby visitor attractions and the
walking and cycling routes.
Lavant Street falls within the Petersfield Conservation
Area and is part of the town centre shopping area. It is
important that the character of the Conservation Area is
preserved and enhanced and for people to find the street
attractive for shopping.
Improvements would aim to:
•Improve the quality of Lavant Street to reflect its location
within the Conservation Area.
•Encourage greater footfall in this part of town, by making
Lavant Street and the station forecourt more pedestrian
friendly.
•Accommodate the increasing number of cyclists.
•Keep vehicle speeds down and deter illegal parking, while
accommodating business servicing and disabled parking.

2. A Short history of
Lavant Street & the Station.
In1859 the railway reached Petersfield, connected to the
London and Portsmouth line and then in 1864 a branch
line opened to Midhurst. Through the C19th the
population of Petersfield grew slowly but in the last
quarter it began to grow more rapidly. Houses were built
in Lavant Street, Station Street and Chapel Street.
However in 1900 Petersfield’s population was still less
than 4,000.
With the arrival of the railway in 1859, it transformed the
town, making the coaching industry obsolete, however it
bought new commerce, new housing and an increased
population.

3. Environmental Enhancements
Lavant Street
Petersfield
Key features would include:
•Wider footways where possible.
•Raised tables at Chapel St and Charles St junctions, plus a central
pedestrian crossing area with an improved footway link to the Swan St
car park.
•Extension of the 20mph limit, designed to be self enforcing.
•Revised on-street parking arrangements.
•Street tree planting where possible.
•Better signing and wayfinding
•Cycle parking.
Improvements to the station forecourt would include:
•Definition of this area as a destination rather than a continuation of the
street.
•Additional pedestrian space by the station entrance, incorporating better
wayfinding information.
•Cycle parking.

6. Timing of the works
When will the Station Forecourt Improvements
& environmental enhancements take place?
These improvements will be phased.
The Station Forecourt improvements are currently planned to start
between January and March 2015
Environmental Enhancements to Lavant Street will commence from
March 2015. The timing of the work will be agreed with those most
affected by the work to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.
How will these works be carried out?
Businesses and residents will be contacted to enable coordination of
the works and to keep disruption to a minimum. Please see the
side panel for ways in which you can help.
Consultation with statutory undertakers will be carried out so that
where possible utility works could be undertaken in advance of the
road maintenance and possible improvements. Once the
improvements have been completed a Section 58 notice will ensure
that no planned works are undertaken by statutory undertakers for at
least five years. Only emergency works will be allowed within this
period.
