INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR
SAVING THE ARAL SEA (IFAS)
International Fund for saving the Aral Sea was established in 1993 by the
Heads of the Central Asian States. The main goal of the Fund is to
overcome the ecological crisis and to improve social-economic situation
in the Aral Sea Basin acknowledged by the world community as one of
the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century.

PROJECTS & PROGRAMS
1. Aral Sea Basin Program 1 (1993-1997). The Program included 8 components;
2. Water Environmental Management Project. The Project included 6 components;
3. Strategic action plan for improvement of environment and socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea Basin for the period of 2003-2010 (ASBP-2). The Program includes 14 priorities and approved by IFAS Board Decision on August 28, 2003.

Underground waters
(339 entrails are explored and approved for use) total regional stocks - 43, 49 km3 in the Amudarya basin - 25, 09 km3 in the Syrdarya basin - 18, 4 km3
The total magnitude of the approved stocks makes 16,64km3. The existing cumulative selection of waters for different water users makes about 11, 04 km3 per year, though in early 1990s it exceeded 14, 0 km3
