The deal was worked out to help 98 -year -old Massey continue its tradition of neveraccepting government funding or incurringan operating defecit, said Pat Taylor, theprogramming director for both Massey andRoy Thomson Hall.

American Music Awards. Those Americanssure know how to light their TV shows (EC: Isthat a dig . . . or what?). I wonder if the peopleat CTV know who she is? All the promos forthe show named only the American acts whowere appearing. The Beauty And The Beast,Dion's duet with Peabo Bryson, is #1 with ACprogrammers in Canada and closing on the #1spot on US trades. (EC: Maybe CTV's not onSony's mailing list . . . I)

Keeping the record straight . . . ! Thedefinition of"paucity" is: "smallness, scarcity,scantiness." (EC: That's either a descriptionof a penis or a stripper . . I)

Big hearted Vito ... ! When ROW's VitoIerullo was asked to supply the jerseys for thematch between the Ontario and Quebec RecordIndustry hockey tournament, he thought theyonly meant the Ontario team, at an estimatedcost of $576. He ended up paying for bothteams, something in the neighbourhood of$2,300, and then they stuck him with thedinner bill, another $250 and another $50 barbill. But Vito, being Vito took it all in hisstride and dished out the more than $2,550.Unfortunately his team lost to the Quebecers.LOST? They were totalled . . . 17 to 5. Howembarrassing .. . and both sides had ringers, yet! But, just to make Vito feel good he waspresented with an award .. . The Falling StarAward. Now Garry Newman and friends areasking for a rematch . . . something about alanguage barrier. Watch for them to hit the icesometime in April. And don't be too surprisedto see a few of the good hockey players fromthe Quebec team to be transferred to Ontario.(EC: That 's fair game . . . !)

Name, rank and serial number . . . !

Whenever I get one of those invitations thatsays "NOT TRANSFERABLE", I picture someexclusive gathering. When I get there the moblooks like every plant and warehouse personin the business and all the freeloaders andhangers on. (EC: Look who's talking aboutfreeloading!!) Someday I'd like to see a list ofall those people who show up . . . since theinvite wasn't transferable. (EC: When did youdevelop this nasty streak . . . ???)The ratings are in ... ! Some of the moreaggressiveprogrammers are spreading the joyof their win in the latest BBM rating race. Oneof the big winners is Toronto's MIX 99.9, "thesuccess story of Toronto," says ProgramDirector Pat Holiday. Their 12plus share is up41 % from a 4.4. to a 6.2. The 18-44 quarterhour share is up 50% and the 25-49 quarterhour share is up 48%. Hours tuned is up 38%.Amid the popping of champagne corks,Holiday was heard to say quite clearly, "Wetook the gamble that if we did what thepeoplewanted we would be a success, and that'sexactly what happened. (EC: Champagnecorks popping . . . ?)

Fade to the west . . . ! The champagnepopping corks was also heard at Vancouver'sZ95.3FM. Program Director Brad Phillips iscrowing over the news that the station now hasa weekly full coverage listening area audienceof 245,000, up from last summer's 219,000,making the station "now the #2 FM station in

Vancouver with a 6.1 share of hours tuned."Phillips also reveals the station is #1 in the 12-24 demographic ad that is phone-in program,Sex, Lies and Audiotape, is #1 overall in itstime period.

What about CFRB ? CFRB's Directorof Marketing, Mara Brown, was quick toreport the news that "CFRB 1010 is stillunchallenged as Canada's Number One radiostation." The station has now reached a"phenomenal", her words, 14.4 share of thetotal radio tuning audience. As well, the stationhas increased its full coverage total hourstuned by 1,486 million hours per week to13,279,000 from the fall of 1990. As well,Wally Crouter retains his throne as the King ofBreakfast with his number one positionincreasing in share, "yet again." (EC: The bestargument there is for AM radio to settle in tothe News/Talk and Information format I)

Waste not . .. want not! Now that we'rehurting a little over the recession, it might bea good time to take a close look at what'sgoing out the door under the guise of"necessary" or the usual "everyday expenses".Just think of how much money could be savedon unnecessary and/or lengthy long distancecalls, useless faxing, leaving lights, soundand computer equipment on all night, limousine charges . .. not to mention buyingairline tickets without looking for a deal. (EC:When the going gets tough, the tough startcutting back and checking, checking, checking!)

Money versus ego ... ! My source is thisweek's RPM, but these two contrasting quotesmake you think. Page 8: Joe Summers, "In theperfect world, we do not need the CRTCregulations. In the real world, we would havedifficulty creating Canadian stars withoutthem." On page 1 Bryan Adams, "Cancon andthe CRTC is an outdate, redundant and stupidgovernment system which costs taxpayersmillions of dollars every year. The end resultis that it breeds mediocrity, publicly insults itsmajor artists." Come to think of it, if I were anestablished Canadian artist I would fight toprove that it was my talent that made me amillionaire and not some rule that forced radiostations to play my record. (EC: That's thereal world!!!) Ifyou don't need the ruling thengoodbye!!!

COVER STORY - by Tim Evans

Moe Koffman wouldn't have it any other wayIf things go as planned, Moe Koffman will beplaying music for a long time to come. Hehas to. He doesn't know any other way. Bornin Toronto, which he still calls home, musicand Moe go hand in hand. "It's in me. I don'tthink I could go on with life without knowingthat I could still pick up a flute or Saxophoneand make music."

Playing flute or saxophone is st.methingKoffman has been doing for a lot of years witha lot of people. He was just a young m in whenhe went to the US to work in big bands led bythe likes ofJimmy Dorsey and Charlie Barnet. The list of names he's worked with over theyears is like a who's who of the world's topband leaders and performers: Benny Goodman,

Wei 11 ILL:11111by Tim Evans

U2 holds on . . . barely! U2's MysteriousWays keeps the top spot on the Hit Trackschart, but it was close. Don't Let The Sun GoDown On Me from George Michael and Mr.Elton John appears ready to take over the No.1 position next week. Songs from Bryan Adamsand Tom Cochrane will likely battle for theNo. 2 spot.

Not many any more. There was a time in themid -eighties when duets, from people whonormally don't team up together, went to thetop frequently. If the George Michael/EltonJohn song hits No. 1 as expected next week, itwill only be the second duet in the last fiveyears to reach the top. Name the other one.Hint: it went to No. 1 in December 1987.

Two hits are better than one! I Can'tDance from Genesis bullets into the No. 14spot in just its second week. That puts it twospots ahead of their last release, No Son OfMine. Michael Jackson may also have twosongs in the Top 20 next week, as RememberThe Time climbs 14 places to No. 26, whileBlack Or White drops to No. 6.

The more things change . . . The TopSeven albums all remain in the samepositionsthis week. Most of them have been there for awhile. In the past six weeks, only Enya'sShepherd Moons and Nirvana's Nevermindhave broken into the Top Seven.

Going for two -in -a -row. R.S.F.'s I'm TooSexy hits No. 1 on the Dance chart and reachesNo. 15 on the Hit Tracks. Not once in 1991 dida song that topped the Dance chart hit the TopFive on the H i t Tracks chart. However, MichaelJackson's Black Or White topped both chartson the first week of 1992. In 1990, Vogue,Opposites Attract and Escapade allaccomplished that feat.

The big movie of 1987! The only duet, fromartists who don't normally record together, inthe last five years to hit No. 1 was from theDirty Dancing soundtrack. Bill Medley andJennifer Warnes teamedup for (I've Had) TheTime Of My Life, which hit the top Dec. 12,1987.

Woody Herman, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett,"Count" Basie, Nat King Cole, Quincy Jonesand the list goes on and on.

The time has spent in studioswith these people are times he truly enjoys."Aside from concerts and things, my wholelife has been studio situations, playing TVshows and such. All these TV shows alwayshave these guests. The memories are fondbecause these are some of the best people."

Recently, he was working with NatalieCole in Toronto. "Natalie did two concertshere and I was the orchestra contractor. I hadto book the orchestra that would be able toplay her music to the best of its ability. I wasin the orchestra as well. It was fun. They justloved the band because we had the best peop leavailable."

His job as orchestra contractor alsoapplies to Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicalsin Toronto. Working so closely with Webber'smusic gave Koffman the urge to do his owninterpretations of some of Webber's work. That has led to his current project, a newalbum entitled Music For The Night (A TributeTo Andrew Lloyd Webber) on Duke StreetRecords, distributed by MCA.

For this project, he teamed up with DougRiley. The two similar projects in the pastwith the music of Bach and Vivaldi. Alongwith Andy Hermant, Koffman and Rileypainstakingly sifted through all of Webber'swork, chose the material, the musicians, thearrangement and put together an albumKoffman is very proud of. "We have chambertype interpretations to large symphonicinterpretations to pop with a little bit of jazztinged in there." Known as a jazz artist,Koffman is quick to point out that's not theformat on this album. "It's definitely not ajazz album, although there is improvisationthere."

Koffman also enjoyed working onceagain with Riley, a man he respects quiteopenly. "Doug, to me, is the ultimate musician. He's got all the bases covered. He's a greatpianist, a great arranger, a great composer inclassical, rock, & jazz idioms. Working withDoug again was really a labour of love."

Koffman plays live on a regularbasis. It's something he feels is very importantas a musician. "That's what keeps us honesi. It's not how you played on your recording thatcounts, six months go by and you may not beable to play that way again. It's how you'replaying now that counts." Much like an athleteneeds to constantly work out to stay in shape,Koffman feels the need to continually performto keep that edge. "You can't leave the horn inthe closet and then play every Saturday night. It doesn't work."

RPM is available inBETTER record stores

across Canada

Moe Koffman is a man who has beensuccessful for quite some time and feelsfortunate to be a survivor, lucky to havealways worked in a field he enjoys, and hasprogressed to be involved in several differentprojects. Playing music will always be one ofthose projects. It has to be. He doesn't knowany other way. "I don't think there will ever bea time when I stop playing. I may stop playingfor a living, but I don't think I'll ever stopplaying."

Rita Chiarelli signs withEdmonton's Stony PlainVeteran blues rocker Rita Chiarelli, has signeda recording deal with Edmonton's Stony Plainlabel. Her debut album for the label, RoadRockets, is scheduled for a late Februaryrelease.

The first single, Love Overload. aChiarelli original, is available on Warner MusicCD compilation #122. It was this song thatwon Chiarelli Toronto's Q107 Homegrowncontest. This win opened the door for her atthe National Molson Canadian RocksShowdown '91 competition, which she won.

After a national promotion tour topromote her new album, Chiarelli and herRoad Rockets band will mount a tour of majorcities. Chiarelli is managed by William"Skinny" Tenn and is represented by TheAgency.

Part Three of a series

We can't afford to wait forthe Americans!Paul Burger - PresidentSony Music CanadaI look forward to the coming year with greatoptimism. The relatively strong music retailsales over the holidays is an indication thepublic recognizes the great entertainmentvalue music holds now that front-line CDs canbe purchased for under $20.00. As it isreasonable to expect a continuing soft economythroughout 1992, this high perceived valuefor music should help keep our industryhealthy.

From the talent perspective, this willprove to be a great year - especially forCanadian music. Continued strong sales andmarketing programs for Bruce Cockburn,Rush, Cassandra Vasik, Kathleen and DionChante Plamondon will be paralleled in thefirst half by exciting new releases from LeonardCohen, 54-40, Barney Bentall, Celine Dion,Francis Martin, Larry Gowan, Steve Fox andHard Rock Miners.

To achieve our objectives for the industryas a whole, it will be necessary for all of us -radio, retailers and record companies - to joinforces in our commitment to develop Canadiantalent. It is great to be able to rely on thestrength of artists like Bruce Springsteen,George Michael, Paul Young and Sade - all ofwhom will have first half releases - but wecannot allow ourselves to use them as a crutch. Our industry is viewed from abroad as one ofthe greatpotential untapped repertoire sources.Recent global successes by Bryan Adams,Alannah Myles and Celine Dion will no doubtbe joined this year by Cowboy Junkies, 54-40and others as Canadian artists find their wayto world markets. To get there, our talentneeds all of our support here at home. Wecan't afford to wait for the Americans todiscover our artists or give it their stamp ofapproval. Without early Canadian success, neither Adams, nor Myles, nor Celine Dionwould be performing at the Grammys, theOscars or the All -Star games.

If we as an industry can rise to thischallenge, I have no doubt that by this timenext year, we'll all be using these pages toproclaim what a "record" year it was. Onlythen, we'll we have more than sales and profitsto salute, we'll be saluting our own "home-grown" international stars.

D.C.C. launch will liftsagging cassette salesTim Rooney - PresidentPolyGram Records of CanadaThe year 1991 was a year of change. Wemoved our company from Montreal to Torontoin March of 1991. Adaption to newmanagement and structure was instigated andwe are happy with the progress, team building, the marketshare increase.

January of 1992 was a promising start to

what will probably be another difficult year.We will be releasing some excellent newproduct: Joseph's Soundtrack, Def Leppard, and Greatest Hits from Lionel Ritchie andTears For Fears and Bootsauce in the first halfof the year. Scheduled for the second half arereleases by Bon Jovi, New Order and SueMedley.

I believe the D.C.C. launch in Septemberof 1992 will give a lift to flagging cassettesales and we expect to improve ourmarketshare.

Extolling the pastsuccesses of A&MJoe Summers - PresidentA&M Records of CanadaThis would be the perfect (and expected)opportunity to extol the past successes ofA&M, Island and Distributed Labels for 1991.I could refer to our fantastic growth; Gold andPlatinum records and pontificate on thechallenges of 1992, but instead, I would liketo take the approach of the Shorney OpticalCompany who placed a full -page ad in majornewspapers reminding us of things that wecan be thankful for.

We can be thankful for:

Dreamers: Whether it be an artist, writeror industry employee, who still has a dreamand desire to contribute to the fiber of ourbusiness and maybe we, the experts and pros, will help shield them from the nightmares andfailures that will occur, and encourage them todream on.

Young People: Starting with theconsumers who relate to our product as animportant ingredient of their life and exhibittheir enthusiasm with purchases that usuallyare first indicators of tomorrow's trends and, also, the youth of the industry, who display apassion for the music or artist that we need tokeep us young and thriving.

The Retailers: Who, for the most part, display an openess and cooperation to promoteand expose our product, while juggling tomaintain their business in the face of difficulttimes. I guess we can also be thankful that thesmall handful of retailers who still adhere tothe adversary approach of wielding a heavyhand of dictatorship will eventually join theranks of the long list of past dictators in TheHall of Shame.

Radio/TV/Media: These are mediums thatserve our industry well and are manned by alegion of hard-working, honest, dedicatedpeople who enjoy their contribution to thesuccess of the industry.

Again, there is a handful of people whomarch to a different drum and whether theyare setting a new beat or are just out of stepwill be judged in time, but we should becareful that we are not using the same brush topaint every picture.

CRTC: In the perfect world, we do notneed the CRTC regulations. In the real world,we would have difficulty creating Canadian

stars without them.Let's be thankful and hopeful that the

CRTC is sincere in their appeal for suggestionsto improve an out -dated structure and that thesqueaky wheel of a self-serving minority doesnot speak for the silent majority.

Technology: As the electronic wizardscreate new and better systems, let's be thankfulfor the opportunities that it allows us and worktogether to launch these technologies in acohesive manner.

R.O.T.I.: Let's also acknowledge the restof the industry (supplies, promoters, independents, clubs, etc. etc.) who share ourenthusiasm and quite often toll in thebackground of our success.

Canada: Even with its warts and woes,it's a pretty good place to live and to dobusiness, and I'm thankful that I've had theopportunity to enjoy 20 great years in thisgreat country.

The decade of thehype is over!Sam SnidermanSam the Record ManAlthough it's already two years into the decade,it has taken two years to slow down the fury ofthe expanding eighties. The decade of thehype is over, and although some is still in useby the inexperienced, as Barnum said "Youcan fool some of the people . . ."

This decade will see sanity and service asthe key words, and within this context therecording companies will have to change someCanadian policies to support the retail tradethat they depend upon. Historically, theconsumer has been primarily in expressing aneed, then followed by the retailer's endeavourto fulfil that need, and lastly, and usually toolong delayed, a reaction from the suppliers. Itis like the reaction from a long line of cars thatare stopped, it takes a long time for the end ofthe line to get moving.

This isn't about more discounts butintroductions in '91 of the GST had definitelyinterfered with retail sales and lack of consumerconfidence, more so, as there was no responseto eliminating the FST with an adjustment ofprice by the manufacturer. There is no doubtthat with the challenge of an open border, thatCanadian distributors will be forced to rethinkwhat they charge for product, most certainlyas compared to American record prices. And,the policy of the manufacturer in being a partyto competition (eg. record and movie clubs -company owned retail stores - TV advertisedproduct not available in record retail outlets -special compilations in conjunction withinunrelated industries etc. etc.) will need to bereconsidered. The American record retailerand NARM are very disturbed with the recordcompanies, most especially with the clubs, and are lobbying for change.

There's no crystal ball gazing as we lookforward to the 2000's. There is no doubt thathonesty will play an important part in keepingthe record industry healthy and thriving. Thatin itself, will sideline some of the players andeven put some out of the game. In the meantime, stay with it, a couple of aspirins will help.

SOUNDTRACKRushReprise - CD 26794-P

Who better to have compose andperform a soundtrack for a movieabout drug addicts and dealers thanformer heroin addict Eric Clapton? And old Slow Hand delivers a fairlyevocative score through the bluesdrenched Instrumentals. Help Me Upand Tears In Heaven are the twotracks that Clapton sings on and theyhave a country based flavour similarto his hit Wonderful Tonight. BuddyGuy sings Don't Know Which Way ToGo, a too long blues jam that goes for10 minutes plus. (CD reviewed) - DP

THE TEMPTATIONSMilestoneMotown - 530 004-2-0

The Temptations deliver an albumthat Is so full of ballads and lovesongs, one could almost mistake itfor a Barry White record. Eenie,Meenie, Minnie, Moe, Any Old Lovin'and The Jones hit some pretty funkygrooves but for the most part, it's oneballad after another. Their old hit GetReady is updated with strings and

,synths but many may prefer theoriginal. (CD reviewed) - DP

- A/C

As soundtracks go, this is no Pretty

Woman or Days Of Thunder, but thereare some worthwhile tracks on this.Paul Young's cover of What BecomesOf The Broken Hearted is receivingplenty of airplay while Jodeci addssome spice with a Hip Hop version ofCherish, not the Madonna or Kool &The Gang song, but the one madefamous by The Association. Thereare some fine bluesy numbers andTaylor Dayne's soulful DangerHeartbreak Dead Ahead highlight asoundtrack a little lacking in high-lights. (CD reviewed) -TE

LOU REEDMagic And LossSire - CD 26662-P

A fun party album this isn't. MagicAnd Loss Is an album written after thedeaths of two of Reed's close friends. The whole album is about death anddying and Reed trying to make senseout of something so senseless. It's abit much to take in to the wholealbum, but there are some interestingtracks. The poetry of The Sword OfDamocles is the best on an albumfilled with fine prose, but tends tobe a little too down. Not to be listenedto with any sharp objects close by.(CD reviewed) - TE

BRENT LEE & THE - Country/PopOUTSIDERSRose TattooJustin Entertainment - JED-19-J

There aren't too many country popbands with as smooth and aggressiveapproach as this former Vancouverquartet, who now make their home inToronto. Would You Love Me? takenas a single, broke several weeks agoat country stations and with a littlemore promotion prodding, ACprogrammers recognized thecrossover potential of the track.Produced by the band: Lee (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Naoise Sheridan(guitar, mandolin, backing vocals),Michael Lynch (bass, backing vocals),and Ron Desjarlals (drums). TerryWatkinson helped out on piano and

Hammond organ. Also key are TakeIt To The Mountain, Next Embraceand Senorita, written by Sheridan andLee's penning of Where I'm Goin'.Great harmony and persuasivevocals by Lee. (CD reviewed) - WG

LENNIE GALLANT - Folk/RockBelieving In BetterRevenant Records - LGCD-102

Lennie Gallant is one of thosesongwriter/performers who has all themakings of becoming a superstar, but it's taking for ever and a day tobreak into the breach that shouldpropel him into stardom. Ten years inthe making, and now, he's just a hair'sbreadth away from that brass ring. With a solid folk backing, this PrinceEdward Island storyteller, now livingin Halifax, is shaking the radiowaveswith his socially -inverted and stingingMan Of Steel single, taken from this

The vocals are raw, soulful andsomewhat repressive yet charmingand, at best, are disarming, which IsGallant's key to attracting attention. In fact, he is attracting a lot of attentionwith his current concert tour, coupledwith the Crash Test Dummies. Watchfor him to emerge a big winner at theupcoming East Coast Music Awards(Feb. 16). Also key are The OtherSide, written by Gallant and ChrisCorrigan, Crumbling Foundations andMartyn's Brook, solo pennings byGallant. Produced by Matt Zimbell.Distributed by Atlantica Music(Brookes Diamond Productions) ofHalifax. (CD reviewed) - WG

EMMYLOU HARRIS - CountryAND THE NASH RAMBLERSAt The RymanReprise - CD -26664-P

Emmylou Harris hasn't been settingthe charts on fire for quite some time, but this all -acoustic set should bringher back into prominence once again. The setting is Nashville's famedRyman Theatre where producersAllen Reynolds and Richard Bennettcaptured this veteran live. The vocals

are ghostly pure, almost hallowed, asHarris picks through song material byBruce Springsteen (Mansion On TheHill), Steve Earle (Guitar Town), BillMunroe (Scotland), John Fogerty(Lodi) and Stephen Foster (HardTimes, an indication of the incredibleentertainmentvalue this album holds. Also key are Like Strangers, writtenby Boudleaux Bryant and JackClement's Guess Things HappenThat Way. (CD reviewed) - WO

FROZEN GHOSTShake Your SpiritWEA - CD 75149

Those expecting the usual radiofriendly ballads from Ghostsongwriter, Arnold Lanni, may be infor a bit of a shock on this latest Ghostrelease. Aside from the ballads Cryand Head Over Heels, Lanni Is in arocking mood. Not that the albumisn't radio friendly. Shake Your Spiritshould have no trouble garnering airplay and Something To Say and StuckIn A Groove have further radiopotential. The only trouble with thisalbum is the final "tracks" whichconsist of 30 seconds of whistlingand two minutes of guys giggling inthe studio. (CD reviewed) - DP

JOE DIFFIE - CountryRegular JoeEpic - EK-47477-H

Look at the charts these last fewmonths, and Joe Diffie has been there. He's one of the newer breed of countrystorytellers and he's obviously liningup a large following among countryprogrammers. Is It Cold In Here is hislatest chart item, making good gainsup the RPM Country 100. Also keyare Ships That Don't Come In, thetitle track and Ain't That Bad Enough.Di ffie's vocals have lots of countrysoul. Produced by Bob Montgomeryand Johnny Slate. If Diffie hits thetour circuit in Canada, he coulddiscover a whole new world for hisnew youth -oriented brand of country.(CD reviewed) - WG

Melfort concert was the best -attended on theCash tour, "we outsold Saskatoon, Regina andeven Calgary."

Restless Heart sets western Canadian datesbeginning March 8 for two shows atWinnipeg's Pantages Playhouse. The RCArecording band will then play the JubileeAuditorium in Edmonton (Mar. 10), followedby the Saskatoon Centennial Auditorium (11),the Centre for the Arts in Regina (12), RedDeer's Centrium (14), Calgary's Jubilee (15),Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre (17), and thefinal date at the Memorial Arena in Kamloops(18). The band is currently charting with YouCan Depend On Me, taken from their Best Ofalbum.

Steve Wariner, who had a good nin up thecharts recently with Leave Him Outta This, from his Arista album I Am Ready, hasscheduled two Canadian dates. He is firmedfor the Edmonton Convention Centre for Feb.29, which is closed to thepublic, and Calgary'sSilver Dollar Action Centre on Mar. 1.

Capitol Nashville donstitle of Liberty RecordsCapitol Nashville has officially changed itsname to Liberty Records, effectiveimmediately. The President of the label, JimmyBowen, explained the change"will bring betterfocus, fewer preconceptions and widerrecognition to the historic strides currentlybeing achieved by the label."

It was also pointed out that for the pasttwo years, Capitol Nashville has been the onlymajor record label based in Nashville. Otheroffices in Music City are only divisions oftheir companies. "Liberty Records is the onlyautonomous Nashville label with businessaffairs and financial departments, and thecapability of making contractual and financialdecisions right here. Because of thatdistinction, andplans for this label's expansioninto many forms of alternative music, a namechange decision was made in late 1991."

Bowen apparently took exception to thefact that a US trade lists Capitol next to GarthBrooks' Ropin' The Wind. "This kind ofmisconception has resulted in an identifyloss, and we can do something about theproblem simply by changing the name. I startedlooking at the names EMI owns, and lo andbehold, there was Liberty. That name hasmeaning for me on two levels. Al Bennett, who owned and ran Liberty in its heyday, wasa dear friend of mine, so there is a personalconnection. But the name Liberty also meanssomething broader. If there's one word forwhat's happening in the world in the '90s, it'sthe hope of and the chance for Liberty."

Bowen also announced the formation ofan alternative department within the Libertyumbrella. The department will be headed byCharlie Lico, who has recently re -located toNashville from Los Angeles. Lico'sdepartment will concentrate on jazz, NewAdult Contemporary, World Music and otherstyles. "Down the road, five or ten years, we'llbe involved in every kind of music that exists,"concludes Bowen.

ATI introduces newQuadrapak compilationToronto -based ATI will shortly release aunique Quadrapak CD compilation. Unlikethe standard compilation, ATI' s Quadrapakfeatures four artists, each performing foursongs.

"The compilation idea has its pitfalls,"says ATI President Scoot Irwin. "I'm suremostprogrammers don't want to take the timeto wade through as many as 21 selections tofine one they can use."

Apparently the idea of the Quadrapak,4X4, An ATI Collection, "came out ofnecessity due to the fact there's no more vinylbeing pressed in this country, although vinylis still strong in the US and European markets.

"I have taken four artists, each havinghad significant airplay on vinyl, used thosewhich would be familiar toprogrammers, thenadded new material by each artist."

Although the ATI compilation is called4X4, making the package 16 song release, there is one extra track, a bonus song not listedin the credits. The four artists featured on theATI compilation are Karen Cunningham, FloydTolman, Janan Frances and Mod Pharis.

The new ATI Quadrapak will be launchedin Calgary on Feb. 18 to mediapersonnel, withthe artists in attendance.
