voltage2. Usually changes 120 VAC to 10K-20K VAC

3. The next slide is the old way of checking

OLD STYLE TRANSFORMERS4. They are still out there and found every

where5. You can still buy them and install them6. The way shown in your books and the

next slide is OK for this type of transformers.

7. This should never be done with igniters8. IT IS STILL DONE THIS WAY IN THE

FIELD !!!!

1. Similar to a transformer2. Works with solid state materials3. More sparks per second4. Are designed to come out of the circuit5. Can be checked better than old type

6. How to test with spark methoda. disconnect powerb. lift igniter to full open positionc. set high voltage clips to ½” to ¾” gapd. energize igniter and check for sparke. if spark jumps the gap igniter is good

7. How to check with ohming methoda. With power offb. ohm high voltage lead to ground screwc. ohm second lead to ground screw d. if both ohm readings are within 10% igniter is good.

ElectrodesElectrodes1. Made of Carbon steel with ceramic insulators2. Operation

A. When a call for heat begins the burner motor is energized along with the ignition transformerB. 10K-20K VAC is applied to the electrodes with enough force to jump across the gap igniting the fuel air mixture

C. The high pressure of the air makes the electricity arc in a horseshoe shapeD. The arc itself is what contacts the fuel/air mixture, starting ignition

Common ProblemsCommon Problems1. Wrong electrode adjustment (Gap too

large or in the oil stream)2. Cracked or dirty ceramic insulators3. Bad transformer
