• March 2009– Apple infrastructure installed– Tech Apps labs received iMacs

Purchasing Apps

• iTunes Gift Card or Credit card– Purchases are tied to Teacher email used on the iTunes

account on Teacher laptop– Must pay Sales Tax

• Volume Purchase Program– Apps are purchased centrally through a district account– App codes distributed to teachers

• Either via Email or through a 3rd party solution like Casper

– Teachers download apps using App codes– Apps belong to the email account that Teacher uses to

redeem App codes

• Allows Education Institutions to Purchase Multiple Copies of an App tax free and often discounted

• Program Manager– Sets up VPP and creates program facilitator accounts

• Program Facilitator– purchases Apps from education store

– When an App is purchased, the program facilitator is given an App code to redeem

• One central Program Manager• Program Facilitator for each campus or

department (50+)• Program Facilitator uses Casper to distribute App

codes to devices• End user (teacher) redeems under a single SBISD

• Challenges– In order to maintain “ownership” of Apps, the App codes must be

redeem under an Spring Branch ISD iTunes Account– If App code is redeem under a personal account, there is no way to

regain ownership– Program facilitators will need to learn minor system administration in

Casper– For mass distribution, smart groups are not easily created– 50+ accounts to look for information (App codes)– When App is pushed, defaults to iTunes account that is currently signed

in (iOS5)– When App code is scoped to device through Self Service, teacher must

remember to use Spring Branch ISD iTunes Account (iOS4 or iOS5)

• Exploring easier methods– Gift cards and individual teacher iTunes accounts

• Exploring more cost effective methods– Casper is a large expense in pursuit of inexpensive

Apps!– Under VPP Apps must be purchased for each

device, at a discounted price– Under normal App store purchase, can have an

App on up to 10 devices
