Monday – Writing

Journey to the Jungle Exploring jungles is very exciting. Every time I discover a new one, I write in my ‘Jungle Log’. It is a bit like a diary and it is where I write down what has happened on my visits. Here is my entry from my visit to the Atlanti Jungle in Oreno, an amazing place where the sky is yellow and the soil pink. Listen to a recording of the text below here: https://soundcloud.com/talkforwriting/jungle/s-4Ye8khPyx1x Jungle Log: 18th April, 2020 Today has been an amazing day of discovery! I woke early and got ready for my trek into the Atlanti Jungle. I was excited and couldn’t wait to see what lay ahead of me. I packed my rucksack and put on my sturdy walking boots. I made sure my camera was working because I wanted to record as much of the day as possible. I left the camp at 6am. First, I trudged through the dense forest and collected samples of the plant life. My favourite was a thorny bush. It had tiny, yellow flowers growing on it, which smelt like ice cream! Next, I studied some of the mesmerising insects that were crawling up the rough bark of every tree. One insect looked like a caterpillar but had 2 sets of wings and tiny hands on the ends of its 20 legs. Excitedly, I photographed as many creatures as I could because I wanted to show my explorer friends what I had discovered. After a short tea break, I measured the circumference of the tallest trees to work out how old they were. One measured 10 metres around and was so tall that I couldn’t see the top of it. It reminded me of the beanstalk in a famous children’s story. Next, I trekked to a clearing and found a beautiful plunge pool. The water was turquoise and tiny neon fish were splashing on the surface. I tried to catch one, but they were too fast for me. Then it was time for a rest. I lounged on pink grass, soaking up the purple sun beams and listened to the strange jungle noises around me. Finally, I headed back to camp because the sun began to set. It sets quickly in Oreno and I was worried I might get lost. When I got to my tent, I unpacked my rucksack and stored my plant samples safely. I’m really looking forward to where my adventures will take me next time! ©Maria Richards 2020

Monday – Maths Task 1 Starter - Arithmetic Use your knowledge of addition and subtraction to calculate the following sentences:

Open the link below

Work with the teacher who is teaching the lesson. The fluency matches the independent questions, but it also has extra activities. Have a go at quiz from the start and the end of each lesson. Stem Sentence: An angle is the space created between two intersecting (joined) lines.

A turn is to rotate about a point. A turn can be described as a quarter-turn, half-turn, three-quarter turn or a complete turn. A turn can be completed clockwise and anticlockwise.

Fluency 1) Find the pair of lines that create angles.

2) Sort the pictures into the correct column based on whether the pairs of lines form an

angle. A has been done for you.

3) Use the symbols <,> and = to compare the size of the angles.

Wednesday – Writing Task 3 10 things in an explorer’s rucksack Here’s a poem I wrote when I got back from exploring Atlanti. It’s a list poem and it is all the magical things I’d like to find in my rucksack. 10 Things in an Explorer’s Rucksack A sizzling sun beam scorching the sky,

The sound of rain splashing on mud,

A rhino’s footprint, A hat made of stars,

10000 leaf skeletons glittering in the wind,

The sweetest fruit from an ice cream tree,

A never-ending flapjack,

The smell of jungle clouds,

A feather from a Soupee bird,

A pair of very sore feet.

Resources to support transition back to school or continuation of home learning

Our children have all been through an incredible amount over the past few weeks and our experiences of lockdown – both the highs and the lows - will have varied greatly. Advice from professionals is that communication and preparation are key for supporting children at this time. With this in mind, we have found and developed some resources to support children and families with transition – whenever that may be.

1) My Lockdown Experience – sheet included in all learning packs w/c 1st June and available from the school website. Please use this as a discussion tool with your children when it is their moment to begin thinking about coming back to school. The themes of this sheet will form some circle-time discussion with the children on their return.

2) Social story – ‘What is happening?’ – available on the school website – for all children explaining schools partially re-opening for some children.

3) Social story – ‘Coming Back to School’ – available soon on the school website – for all children who are returning – please select the version which matches your child’s allocated ‘bubble’.

4) Assemblies by Mrs Wilcox – one for children returning and one for children continuing to learn at home – available after half term on the school website.

Topic Activities The following Topic activities are for the next 2 weeks.

Science Watch the video below to learn about water transportation in plants.

https://www.thenational.academy/year-3/foundation/to-explain-how-a-plant-transports-water-year-3-wk5-3

Then have a go at filling in the following statements using the vocabulary below

Investigation of how water is transported within plants

For this investigation you will need 3 small jugs/ plastic bottles (half filled with water), two different colours food colouring and celery stalk or white flowers. Make sure that the celery stalk has leaves one. Keep one of the jugs with clear water and add the food colouring to the other two. The more concentrated the colour, the clearer the observations.

Leave the plants in the jars for a couple of days and then fill in the sheet below with your observations.

RE Gurdwara Sikhs worship both in public, at the Gurdwara, and in private, at home. Gurdwara is the place where Sikhs come together for congregational worship. The word Gurdwara means door or gateway to the Guru. Have a look at the videos and information below then create a poster about the Gurdwara. Think about these questions when creating your poster;

• What do Sikhs to do show respect when entering the Gurdwara? • What is inside a Gurdwara? • What celebrations may take place in the Gurdwara? • Where would you find the Sikh holy book (Guru Granth Sahib) in a Gurdwara? • Can you explain what a langar is?

We are going to look at some examples of frottage from the surrealist artist Max Ernst.

Try to use this technique and create your own piece of art. Here are some examples:
