Datuk Abdul Farid Alias

Group President & CEO, MaybankPuan Nora Abd Manaf

Group Chief Human Capital Officer, Maybank

Welcome to GILD Asia 2018. We are pleased to partner up with Linkage for this year’s edition on the back of a highly successful inaugural run of the Global Institute for Leadership Development (GILD) in Asia in 2017.

Many of us believe in growing our leaders not only to improve our performance and deliver results, but also to create value for others and find a sense of purpose in what we do. It is only by having a shared common purpose that we can forge a powerful connection between each other. Together, the sense of fulfilment in the purpose amplifies a hundred times more. In this, we will draw greater strength and resilience in the face of challenges and adversaries.

In this second instalment of GILD Asia, we will be exploring the theme of ‘Purposeful Leadership. Powerful Impact’. Like in the previous years, we hope to gather great minds, experts, gurus, experienced leaders and eager learners under one roof to create an enriching learning experience. With a true melting pot of diverse and high calibre people, I would like to invite you to cultivate connections, challenge views and topics that matter to you, and collect a couple of ‘golden nuggets’ along the way, those that you want to adopt in the future.

I would like to personally and purposefully welcome you to join this signature event. Take the journey with us on this very exciting programme and inspire other leaders to build better organizations, better lives and eventually a better world.

At Maybank, it truly is all about our people. It is our responsibility as responsive leaders to build and design a future for our younger generation and we are proud that Maybank’s continued commitment to our leaders and their development has produced one of the largest pools of leadership talent internally in the last 50 years. It is a huge mandate especially with the seismic changes that technology presents and the different needs of our people. But, in this calling, lies the greater purpose for each of us as leaders.

Answering the question, “What is the real essence of leadership?” has never been easy however. The most competent, result-oriented and ambitious people do not always grow into successful leaders we respect and admire. Perhaps the closest we came to answering the elusive question was when we started anchoring leadership and all its multi-faceted layers to Purpose.

Without purposeful leadership, we can achieve results and performance, but we may not be able to create meaning. We may be able to drive the top and bottom line, but we may not ‘embody wisdom, conviction, responsibility, commitment, openness and belief in others and their capabilities’. At Maybank, we aim to grow purposeful leaders.

We are, therefore, happy to partner with Linkage once more and be given the opportunity to accomplish our purpose-driven leadership development agenda through GILD Asia. This year’s GILD is indeed a fascinating opportunity to launch Linkage’s Purposeful LeadershipTM model that we resonate with very much in terms of our mission, values and future leadership needs.

I hope you can join us in this experience of a lifetime and enjoy the benefits of learning what it takes to be a great leader.

Transform your organization’s leadership

capabilities by coming together at GILD Asia.

Our research, inclusive of over 100,000 leaders worldwide, revealed that purposeful leaders commit to a lifelong journey centred on five leadership commitments. The GILD Asia experience is a fundamental step in the journey of becoming a purposeful leader. Participants experience the five commitments through a combination of 360˚ assessment, small group learning sessions, world class faculty, one-on-one coaching and an Individual Development Plan focused on empowering each leader with tools to create lasting impact.

Your path to Purposeful

LeadershipTM starts now.

You – and others in your organization – are committed to change, driven to excellence,

and focused on creating meaningful impact.

And together, you’re not only ready for what’s next – you’re ready to change the game.

1360˚ Assessment

Before GILD Asia begins, complete Linkage’s 360˚ Purposeful Leadership AssessmentTM, a multidimensional tool that measures leaders in the five commitments that differentiate purposeful leaders. This tool is the culmination of research from more than 100,000 leaders worldwide. It assesses both the internal development of a leader – how he or she personally responds to situations and manages himself or herself – and the leader’s impact on the organization and their team members.

Hand-select your individual coach, with whom you’ll have a 60-minute dedicated session during the Institute, followed by two virtual meetings 4-6 weeks after GILD Asia. The coach becomes a trusted partner for helping participants debrief their assessment results, craft an Individual Development Plan and monitor progress on their goals. Many participants extend their coaching relationship to drive lasting impact after the Institute.

GILD Asia faculty is a mix of world- renowned leaders, educators, authors, executives, entrepreneurs, coaches and team facilitators who are committed to the principles of leading purposefully. A total participant-to-faculty ratio of 4:1 provides an abundance of in-depth learning opportunities and ongoing access to the experts throughout the GILD Asia experience.

4Learning Teams

Prior to GILD Asia, each participant is assigned to a facilitator-led team of peers based on a number of considerations including: years of experience and level of responsibility. During the Institute, these learning teams gather for two hours each day to reflect on the content shared and draw connections to their most pressing leadership challenges. Organizations who bring at least 12 leaders may request to have their own dedicated facilitator and their own intact learning team.

Leadership Experiences create the opportunity to be inspired. At GILD Asia, you will get the rare opportunity to soak in the best leadership experiences through our off-site expeditions. The experiences built around salient leadership themes, will not only unlock best-in-class leadership insights, but also provide practical lessons which may be applied across different working environments.

GILD Asia is designed to facilitate ongoing learning and engagement from our participants. As part of the GILD Asia tuition, leaders have access to Linkage’s content and online communities designed to reinforce and expand on leadership principles taught on-site.

Message from our Co-chairsOver the past 30 years, successful organizations have focused on developing leaders based on executive, cognitive and emotive competencies. It’s beyond question that to be effective, leaders continually need to strive towards strengthening their competencies. 'YX[LEXPIEHIVWXSHE]SJXIRJSVKIXMWXLEX[LMPIHIZSXMRKXMQIERHIǺSVXXSIRLERGIGSQTIXIRGMIWSRXLINSFMWMQTSVXERXMXMWRSXWYǽGMIRX

So, if not competencies, what really distinguishes great leaders from merely good ones? Linkage’s years of research from over 100,000 leaders points us to the next watershed in leadership development. Our research has led us to believe that it’s the power of Purposeful LeadershipTM – fulfilling leadership commitments – that enables the best leaders to maximize their own and their followers’ performance. Leaders do need to have the requisite competencies, but more importantly, they must be able to deliver on the commitments of inspiring others, engaging teams, innovating intentionally, achieving results, and essentially, becoming purposeful.

Linkage’s research substantiates that leaders who commit to leading purposefully impact their teams, organizations and communities in greater ways. Purposeful Leaders are able to identify a personal “WHY” - and they successfully translate this ideal into an organizational “WHAT FOR” - a broader vision and message for their teams.

Our objective is to help leaders unlock and define their leadership purpose and put it to use. We believe that this is the single most important task you can undertake as a leader today.

Whether you are an emerging leader or a highly experienced C-level executive, it's critical to remember that the more awareness and intention you and your organization can apply to how you inspire, engage, innovate and achieve, the greater the likelihood that business initiatives will be successful. Thus we invite you to join us at Linkage’s Global Institute for Leadership Development® (GILD) Asia and take this opportunity to reflect, provoke your thinking, learn from the best, renew yourself and start your journey in BECOMING a Purposeful Leader.

We look forward to welcoming you at GILD Asia 2018.
