Grady looked up to his uncle MichaelMcGillinen. Uncle Mike had been like a

second father to him. When Grady came toDublin to seek his fortune it was Uncle Mikethat took him in. Gradys father, Ayden, had recognized the restlessness of hisyoungest son. He sent Grady to Dublin tofind his way with the blessing of his fatherand mother, Kerry McGillinen. Gradyseldest brother Ryan was already marriedwith two children and settled on his smallsheep farm near Fanore. Patrick the nextbrother was married, expecting their first

child and living on the sheep farm with hisfather. Dwayne had joined the priesthoodto the delight of their mother, and Seanwas studying to be a teacher. He was theonly child with wanderlust. He studied

geography and read incessantly as a child. His favorite readings were stories and talesof the Wild West opened by Lewis andClarks expedition. He read about theIndians and the Shoshone bird woman knownas Sacagewea. He read about the open land, rich soil, gold, silver, hope, mountainous

expanse, and most importantly freedom ofthe new land.

Grady knew he was too much of a rebel tolive, as he needed in the oppressive rule ofthe British. He first met Captain Donahueas he waited on the tables of the pub heworked for at night. During the day heslept and pursued is desire for learningabout machinery, ledgers, law, andeverything he could learn about husbandry.Grady recognized his need for knowledge asa strong addiction that he might never quell.Captain Donahue was reminded of the son he

lost only a year ago in an accident. Donahuetalked to Grady and filled his head withtales of his voyages and all the exotic placeshe had sailed to. Every day Grady listenedraptly to the tales. He learned to like the

captain. The crew under him also visited the pub.Grady learned from that crew that CaptainDonahue was a fair and honest captain. Heheld Payton Lee3

firm discipline by loyalty and not severepunishment or fear. The last cabin boy was

promoted to seaman and now Donahue wouldbe taking on a new cabin boy. They would besailing first on the Atlantic to the Americasand then around to the Pacific to trade withthe new Americans in whale oil and furs. They would see the Sandwich Islands andthe beautiful native women all the sailorstalked about with lusty laughs.I should be sending for yer Da! Hell flailme alive when he learns I did not stop yafrom doing such a fool thing, Michael

complained.Da will understand, Grady soothed. Heand Mama knew I was born with the wanderlust in me blood.Saints preserve me. Yer Mama, Kerry will

never forgive me.Ive got to be going, Grady smiledcheerfully. Ill write when I have thechance.Grady turned and waved once again to hisUncle Michael and walked toward the docks. He had signed as cabin boy for two years.

He would learn everything he could from thesailors. Then he would leave the ship at the

Port of San Francisco. He would go to thefur fields of western America and perhapsdo a bit of mining along the way. It was agreat life he planned. In two years wewould be sixteen and a man.Chapter 1 Genevas Legacy37So we are here at last, Grady McGillinen,Gus Bartley complained. What do youintend to do in this blasted noisy and filthy

place? You didnt have to come, Gus.And leave you and your fortuneunattended? Someone has to protect youfrom yourself and your wealth. There are

woman in placeslike this that would bleed you to death. Iaint worked with ya all these years to letyou be taken by a loose woman. Didnt yerMama ever tell you about women like that?Grady laughed boisterously. Gus Bartleywas an old man of forty some when they

joined fortunes on the fateful day he tookhis pay from Captain Donahue, bought a gun,

horse, rifle, saddle and food staples. Hesaid his goodbyes to the crew and met GusBartley in the hotel. Gus was talking aboutthe furs and trading he did up in UtahTerritory. Gus was a blow hard, butobviously a good tracker. Grady learned alot about people and the importance oftrade and partnership while a cabin boyaboard Donahues ship. Gus needed moneyfor supply and Grady needed a wisewoodsman. The partnership was fruitful.

The forty-year-old man learned a lot fromthe young sixteen year old boy man. Gradylearned a lot from the wood wise old man.Their partnership brought success andwealth What are we doing in this big ugly

city? Gus demanded stretching his neck inthe celluloid collar. I feel like my neck isabout to be stretched by a necktie party.Gus, you look great for an old geezer. Thatnew store bought suit makes you lookdownright handsome, Grady encouraged.

I look like a plucked chicken, Gus groused.Im more comfortable and look prettier in

my buckskins. You would scare the locals, Grady grinned. The city folk in Boston are refined.Whats refined? Gus questioned.Genteel, soft spoken, Grady replied. Cityfolk are different.Soft? Oh yeah, soft like in the head, Gusagreed pointing to his own.Ive business to take care of, Gus, Gradyreminded. I told you all about it when wefirst decided to come to Boston.

Oh yeah, those investments of yours. Dontblamed understand that investment paperstuff, but your brains done me good PaytonLee3

8so far, Gus conceded. Lets buy them dadblamed railroad investment stocks and go onhome.Grady smiled. Home was no longer Irelandand the McGillinen clan land. Home was hissweet ranch. He and Gus had found the land

in between the Cherry Valley and small towngrowing called Ely. Gus was getting to old to

track and the fur business was growing thin.Grady bought the land as an old gold minethat quickly had ran out. It turned out thegold was thin but a rich vein of silver wasfound. Gus and Grady kept it a secret. They pulled only enough silver out to buynecessity. As the mines surrounding hisland gave out, he bought them up increasinghis land holdings. The miners needed newgrub steaks to follow the gold trails. Gradygave them work. He had them build a large

log ranch house on his land. He keptbuilding on to the ranch house, as moreminers needed jobs. Soon he had barns, stables, and servant cabins. Gus and Gradyagreed to take more of the money and

bought horses, cattle, sheep, and even letsome miners with their families stay on tofarm.Gus and Grady soon had thriving businesstrades all over the country and the Mormonsettlements. Grady still had a need to grow

and he made investments throughbrokerages in Boston. The investors sent

word to Grady to meet the railroadstockbrokers. They preferred face-to-facemeetings and agreements. Grady had lookedforward to it. His need for moreexperiences and knowledge lured him to thisbig metropolitan city. He had been to SanFrancisco of course, Virginia City, Chicago, and even St. Louis. He still wanted to go tothe three great eastern cities. To him NewYork, Boston, and Washington City would belike visiting London, Paris, and Madrid.

Grady had seen other large cities likeTokyo, Shanghai, and Bombay. He had seenall the oceans and enjoyed the differentcultures of many different lands, butAmerica was special to him.

Gathering wool again? Gus grumbled. Thechills of the Boston Atlantic winds werebothering his aching old bones.Grady knew immediately that Gus wassuffering. Lets get into our warm hotelroom and get a cup of hot soup.

More likely a swig of good whiskey, Gusbrightened. Do these old bones more good

than a drink of some soup.Ill buy you a good Irish whiskey, Gradystated taking Guss arm and leading him to ahack waiting at the train station. It willtake time for this investment to serve highprofit. Genevas Legacy39 Oh Ashley, hes dreamy! Alyson sighedbrushing her younger sisters hair. Imaginea Lord like Grant Wessex becoming your

beau. Papa must be delighted. He is handsome, Ill give you that, Ashleyagreed. She turned abruptly and walked toher bed.Handsome? That is an understatement,

sweet sister. Hes also a bloody BritishLord! Youre the envy of your coming outfriends. You dont understand, Alyson. I like him,but that magic isnt there.Alyson put her hands on her hips. Magic, just what exactly are you expecting?

  • 7/30/2019 1 Geneva's Legacy

    12/552

I dont know exactly, Ashley repliedpronouncing the word exactly with emphasis.

Grant is handsome, a British Lord, and anice man, but I sense he cannot return love.I do believe he loves someone else.Curse this talent for sensing things thatwe have, Alyson stated sitting down on thechair in their room. I sensed it as well, butwho couldnt fall in love with someone asbeautiful as my sister. He did dance everyone with you at the coming out cotillion. Hesent his card and introduction the next day.I just thought he had to be interested.

You didnt fall all over yourself for the menthat came courting you, Ashley reminded. You know Im in love With a soldiercoming up at the academy, Ashley finished.Alyson blushed. Papa is so against cadet

Charles Jameson. He doesnt come from money or bloodlines. Not according to his insufferable parents.Dont forget you would marry into hisfamily, Ashley chided. His parents dontlike you very much either. They want theirson to marry a Southern Belle blueblood

    13/552

that they will control. New money peopleare really difficult. I worry for you just

like Papa.Charles and I love each other. Well makeour love grow and conquer our parents,Alyson vowed.I hope so. I truly do.Audrey is happy with her choice. Papadidnt like him very much. It turned outwell, Alyson said cheerfully. Besides wewere Payton Lee310

talking about you. Papa is pleased with LordWessex. Hes looking forward to the match.Papa still has properties and investments inEngland. He wanted at least one of hischildren to inherit them. How better than a

daughter marrying an English Lord?He should marry an English Lord, Ashleygrumped.I dont think Mamma would like that at all,Alyson chuckled. No, I dont think Mamma would like thattall, Ashley bubbled.

  • 7/30/2019 1 Geneva's Legacy

    14/552

What wouldnt I like? Margaret Stuartasked entering her daughters room with

the grace of a swan.Seeing your darling daughters married andaway, Ashley commented quickly.Well, you are right about that. It isdifficult enough having Audrey just marriedand going back and forth between here andNew York. These investments are such abusy thing, Margaret said wistfully. Stillmy daughters will grow and start families oftheir own. I should be happy to see mygrandchildren. That is what we look

forward to when our children grow.Remember how much Grandma and Grandpaenjoyed our visits?Yes, Mamma. The girls replied in unison.Your Papa is thrilled with Lord Wessexs

pursuit, Ashley, Margaret said quietlytaking her youngest daughters hand. I feelyou are not. I also feel that there issomething in Grants heart that would standbetween you and happiness.

  • 7/30/2019 1 Geneva's Legacy

    15/552

Oh Mamma, I feel so strongly the sameway, Ashley cried crawling into her

mothers arms.Still, Grant pursues his suit and yourfather is pleased. What shall we do?Margaret lamented. Your father will insistupon marriage and I dont believe that wouldbe good for either of you.Grant Wessex is fooling himself in askingfor your hand in marriage. I sense he lovesanother. He would ruin both your lives. If he loves another, Mamma, why does hecourt Ashley?

Perhaps because we are American. Iremember the frolic Harold caused inEngland when he announced he was marryingme. The British are quite snobbish you know,

Margaret enlightened.Your father, a heavily titled Lord marryinga common American was accepted like thegreat England falling into a revolution. Ouronly hope for happiness was leaving Englandand living here. Which of course I am evergrateful. Genevas Legacy

Mamma, you never told us, Alysonwhispered as if someone might hear. There never was a need until now,Margaret sighed. How can Grant take me to live in England?Surely he must know as an American I wouldnever be accepted, Ashley stated intrepidation. With his titles and your titles, perhapsEngland might have changed a bit, Alysonsuggested.

I do hope that will be true, yet I dontwant my daughter to suffer because ofsome revenge in the mind of Grant Wessex.Ashleys eyes opened wide. Revenge? Useme for revenge?

Margaret regretted sharing her innerfeelings immediately. She and Harold werevery happy, but in the beginning of theirmarriage she learned that Harold hadstarted seeing her to start a scandal. Heand his father had words about an arrangedmarriage. Harold stopped it when the ton

caught on to Lord Harold seeing thescandalous American heiress. Margarets

father would not be deterred when helearned of the courting of his daughter. They were both forced into the marriage, but in truth they did love and enjoy eachother very much. They had a truly happy marriage. Haroldwas a strict and rigid father, but he lovedhis girls and wanted to see them happy.Perhaps that might be too strong of aword, Margaret replied defensively. If you feel it, Mamma, it must be true. I

shall call off the courtship. I have othercallers, Ashley stated firmly.Heavens that will never do. Your Papa isthrilled with Grant Wessex. You mightforce Papa to do something we all will

regret, Margaret argued. We must hopefate will take a hand.Kin we go home now? Gus grumpedstanding outside on the boardwalk waitingfor a hack. I jest dont like all this dirtysmoke and noise. I miss me mountains andfresh air. We got the agreement and

investment ya wanted. Its good and wellmake a passel a money agin. I want to go

home. Me old bones is telling me its time togo home.Dont you want to see New York orWashington City? As long as we are here, itwould be time to see the great money city, and the capitol of our country, Gradyrebutted. Ive been to New York PaytonLee312

before. It was some fourteen years ago.

Id surely like to see it again.Jest another filthy dirty noisy city if youask me, Gus complained.Think of all those loose women you need toprotect me from, Grady quipped.

Arghhh, get on with it then. Well see yourbig ugly city, but Washington City is a badand evil place. Theres too much talk aboutpolitics and slavery. Any government thatconsiders slavery acceptable is a sinful evilplace, Gus sermonized.

  • 7/30/2019 1 Geneva's Legacy

    19/552

There are many in Washington City thatare against slavery, Grady argued.

Bah! Them politicians only care about thesize of their purses. There will be a warone day and it is going to be about money, not slaves. Its about the industrialNorthern States wanting the SouthernStates commodity, Gus elucidated. You are a smart old codger, Grady smiled.Gus never ceased to amaze him. Gus alwayscame across as a cantankerous old goat withlittle school learning, but he was a deepthinker and a very wise intelligent man.

Taint hard to put two and two together,Gus answered shyly.Isnt that Grant? Alyson pointed out witha nod toward the opposite side of thestreet. Alyson and Ashley had spent the

day shopping in the exclusive area ofBoston.Grant spotted Ashley and Alyson across theroad. He waved cheerfully. He was happyto see Ashley, but he couldnt stop thefeelings he had for Celeste. Damn hisfather for interfering. There was

  • 7/30/2019 1 Geneva's Legacy

    20/552

something magic with that young debutante. It drove him crazy and not caring about the

ton or propriety he and the sweet youngCeleste made love. The day he proposedmarriage to his dear Celeste she haddisappeared. His father had informed himthat the young girl had already beenbetrothed. Grant went insane and tried tofind Celeste. It was then his fathershipped him off to America to stop anyword of scandal and give Grant time to getover the gel that was far beneath hisstation.

This is the time to talk to Grant. Papa isnot around to intimidate me. I must endthis charade, Ashley whispered to AlysonGenevas Legacy3

13while returning Grants wave. Looking at thebusy street Ashley began to cross when itappeared to be clear.A delivery wagon had not been properlytethered when a child playing in the streetwith a slingshot accidentally struck the

horses rump with a stone. The horse boltedand careened down the street.

Grady was watching for a hack when henoticed the attractive woman begin to crossthe street. Something twisted his gutswhen he looked at her. He heard shoutingup the street. It was a woodsmanheightened awareness of his surroundingsthat allowed Grady to react so quickly tounusual situations or sounds. He saw thehorse and wagon stomping down the streetin the direction of the woman crossing.Instinctively he knew she was in the direct

path of the runaway horse and wagon.Without a thought Grady darted into thestreet, grabbed the womans waist andpulled her back with such force they bothfell backward onto the paved street. Grady

pulled the woman into his chest. When theyfell he took the brunt of the force andknocked the air out of his lungs. The horseand wagon passed them at the same instantmissing them by only inches.

  • 7/30/2019 1 Geneva's Legacy

    22/552

Grant had not noticed the wagon until it wastoo late. He saw the stranger jump out and

grab Ashley saving her life.Alyson was in shock and dropped thepackages she was holding when she saw thehorse and wagon just miss her sister. Sheran into the street where Ashley was stilllying on the ground on the top of a stranger. The police were already running to thescene. Grant ran to Ashleys side.Ashley, are you all right? Grant askedworriedly. He knelt beside her.Ashley was still in a state of shock and quite

out of breath. For the first time in her lifeshe understood the word vapors. Herheart was racing and found she couldntutter a sound.Grady had a hard time catching his breath,

and he knew it wasnt just because of thefall. He had worse falls in the mountains. He was hurt more in fistfights than thislittle tumble. There in his arms was awoman that he felt a strong magnetic forcerunning through him.

Gus followed the other bystanders aroundthe couple and pushed his way through.

What you do a damn blamed thing like thatfer? Payton Lee314

It seemed prudent, Grady squeaked stilllying on his back and still holding on to thisbeautiful woman like he didnt want to letgo.Grant attempted to lift Ashley from theground and Gradys arms, You can releaseher now, sir.

Git up! Gus ordered his friend. And takeyour arms off that gel so the gentleman canhelp her.Grady reluctantly complied. He allowed Gusto help him up and brushed off his new suit.

His gut twisted up inside once more when hesaw the man holding the woman and talkingsoftly to her. It was obvious he knew her.Was that her husband? His insides twistedharder.

Ashley, how dreadful. Are you injured?Grant asked in great concern. He could feel

her shaking in his arms.We need to get Ashley home. Shes as paleas a haunt, Alyson said fearfully. Weshould have a doctor examine her.Grady still sharply attuned to hisenvironment and unhurt other than a bruiseor two from the road pavement heard hername, Ashley.A hack suddenly appeared and Grantsignaled it. He put Ashley and Alyson in it.A bystander had picked up Alysons

packages and placed them in the carriage.Ashley finally looked at her rescuer. At thesame time Grady looked into the carriage toassure his mind that she was fine. Theireyes locked and something pierced into

their inner being. Ashley forced words out,Alyson, get his name. We must thank him.Of course, Alyson reassured. Grant, please obtain the mans name and location. We must thank him properly for saving ourAshley.

Grant nodded and obtained the necessaryinformation.

Ashley was taken home and put to bedimmediately. When Margaret heard whathappened she called for a physician. Thedoctor examined Ashley and assuredMargaret her daughter was shaken up butunharmed. Harold came home late thatnight after several business meetings andran to his daughters room when Margaretinformed him of the days event.Princess, Harold whispered entering herroom. Have you eaten? Genevas Legacy

315Im fine, Papa, Ashley replied drowsily. She had been sleeping due to the laudanumthe doctor had given her. Mamma made

certain I had some broth.Good. Good. Thats good, Haroldrepeated. Princess, when your Mamma toldme how close you came.to. Haroldcouldnt even say the thought on his mind.He loved his daughters. If anything hadhappened to any of them, he didnt know if

he could survive it. His desire for hischildren was a perfect life.

Papa, the man that saved me. We shouldthank him, Ashley said quietly fighting offthe sleep.Of course we will, Harold vowed.Grant was there. He wrote down the mansname and location, Ashley whispered fallinginto a deep sleep.Dont you worry one bit, Princess, Haroldreplied choking back his tears. Ill invitehim to dinner and reward him handsomely.I thought we were a gittin outta here! Gus

complained. You aint hurt and yer sittinhere like an old lady.Just last minute details.A knock at the hotel room door ended theconversation. A bellboy stood in the hall.

Mr. Grady McGillinen?I am.This is a note for you sir, the boy saidsmartly.Grady reached into his coat pocket and gavethe boy a coin.

The boy took off happily and Grady shut thedoor and returned to the hotel room.

Humph, Gus growled. Every time ya turnin this ugly city theres a hand out grabbingfer yer money.Grady opened the note and smile appeared.Drink your expensive Irish whiskey, Gus.Itll improve your attitude. My atti? What in Tarnation are youtalking about? Gus grumbled and looked upat his friend. That a smile glued on yourface?Weve received an invitation, Grady

announced looking up from the note. From the looks of ya, it might be from theQueen of that thar England. Payton Lee316

Better, Grady answered in delight. Wevereceived an invitation to dinner by LordHarold Stuart on Beacon Hill. Hes thefather of the woman this morning. You sweet on her? Gus asked boldly.I dont know her, Grady hemmed.

Humph! Dont mean nottin when you beenthunderstruck boy. You should know you

dont know nottin about her. That tharwoman may be the daughter of a Lord andall, but you she may be a connivin little shewitch out after yer money, Gus warned.Fancy clothes dont mean nottin.I should give the man the opportunity tothank me for saving his girls life, Gradysuggested sheepishly. Just the thought ofseeing her again was twisting him up inside.Had he been thunderstruck? He didnt knowfor sure, but he did know he wanted to see

her again.Gus spit out the whiskey he just sipped andlaughed heartily.Hero are ya? That head is gonna be to bigto fit the door framework of our ranch.

Ashley looked in her full-length mirror forthe fifth time. She turned and turnedagain. Are you certain this a good color forme? You look exquisite! If you were anymorebeautiful youd have to hide yourself,Alyson cajoled. Youd think you wereexpecting Queen Victorias son for dinner. You never acted this way with any of yourother suitors, much less Grant Wessexwhom does wish to be your husband.

Ashley turned bright pink. Her sister didntknow she was anxious about seeing that managain, Grady McGillinen. She had learnedhis name early this morning when hermother sent the invitation after obtaining it

from Grant Wessex.Grant had visited this morning for tea. Hehad wanted to be certain Ashley was notinjured in the accident.Ashley had feigned a headache. She didntfeel up to telling Grant she didnt want himto continue his suit. He had been sweet and

concerned over her welfare. He was such anice man. His concerns seemed genuine, but

she simply was not attracted to him. Shealso felt that he wasnt strongly attractedto her. It was just a feeling, but the Stuartwomen usually were correct with theirfeelings.Ashleys wandering thoughts were broughtback to the moment when a carriage pulledinto the drive of the Stuart Mansion.Ashley pulled the curtain aside to look outthe window. Her heart began racing wildlywhen she watched the sandy haired hulk of

a man step out of the carriage. He wasdressed in formal black wear and thetrousers appeared tight giving her a fullview of muscular thighs. He was handsomeindeed, this man that saved her life.

The Irish have a large amountof pride.I used to be in the House of Lords, mydear, Harold replied gruffly. I think I canhandle an evening dinner with an Irishman, savages that they are.Margaret groaned and plopped down on theparlor chair.

What?Savages that they are? You pompous oldgoat! Margaret snapped. If it isntBritish, if it isnt money, if it isnt BeaconHill, it is savage!

The Irish are savages, luv, Haroldresponded. And the East Indian, and the NativeAmerican Indians, the natives of theSandwich Islands, and let us not forget theScots! Margaret crackled.

He stopped atMargarets chair and offered his arm. This here place is a dad burned palace,Gus offered allowing the butler to take hiscoat. Dont like no palace! Gradys heart stopped beating at theannouncement. He didnt understand hisown emotions but he wanted to scream atthe Brit that Ashley belonged to him.Didnt he save her life as the Brit stoodstaring? Didnt saving her life make herhis? He thought he read this somewhere.Gus sat at the table and stared at thesettings. What in the Sam Hill do you needso much dad blamed stuff fer? A spoon orfork with a knife will do. Gosh Almighty

Gus and I live in Utah Territory.Grant was surprised by Gradys non-

Grant wasnt aboutto let a conversation die on the vine.Does he look like a soldier? Gus growled inresponse. We see Injuns all the time, butwhere we live there are the Sosoni Injuns.Theyre a peaceable lot. Nicer than mostwhite folk Ive met. Friends with lots ofthem. Fought a couple though, me and
