This past month, I managed to slip away for a couple of days to Sunriver for some much needed rest& relaxation. As much fun as I had and as much as I loved the change in the smell of the air, there is truly no place like home. When ever I am out of town, it reminds me of how lucky I am to live in this community and how much our area has to offer. I tell people everyday how lucky I am to work at a hotel with such an amazing view. I do hope that this finds all of you having a prosperous summer and hopefully making new friends, connections & business relationships in the process. That’s what business is all about and what I truly enjoy. Those little extra touches make our visitors/customers/clients want to

come back and remember you from year to year. The Chamber will be holding its Board of Directors annual retreat & goal setting session this month. I am looking forward to sitting down at the full board meeting with all of the new members and setting some great goals for the coming year. Every year at this planning session, we develop a handful of goals that we believe will strengthen the business arena, Chamber and the community as a whole. Stay tuned for an update on what your Chamber’s Board of Directors will be focusing on this year. Just a reminder…….I would like all of you to jump on the ‘Kuhl Bus’ and head to the Chamber Luncheons on Friday. We hold an informative Chamber Luncheon every Friday from 12-1pm. It’s a great opportunity to network with fellow business professionals and learn something at the same time. We look forward to seeing you there! Enjoy the summer!

The 4th Annual Amazing Race, hosted by the Newport Chamber of Commerce Yo-Pros was a rousing success. This challenging event attracted participants from all over Oregon and its success was due in large part to the sponsorship and support of many of our

local businesses who invested in the younger members of our professional community. Thank you to our Sponsors!

The following information is from an article that was shared by Police Chief Mark Miranda. I thought it was interesting and rings true. We have even covered the subject at a Chamber luncheon. While the article that Mark forwarded pertains to Young Professionals, I revised a few things because it is relevant no matter what age or demo-graphic you are. Just good plain sense information. Cyber Smarts Searching for and starting a new job can be an exciting and nerve wracking experience. Writing a good resume, networking, and honing your skills and qualifications are im-portant, but staying safe and responsible online can also play a big role in landing and keeping a job. People who engage in social media should be careful about how they portray themselves online – or how they manage their “personal brand.” Employers are increasingly using social media as a method to help screen potential candidates, and your

online activities both at home and at work can help determine if you move up the career ladder or find yourself job searching again. Many laws that are on the books are not crafted to cover things related to social media as far as hiring and firing practices. It is best to always assume that if you text it, type it, post it, that it is up for public grabs now and in the future. To help safeguard your online brand and protect your personal information, follow these tips from the Stop.Think.Connect.™ Campaign: Think before you post. Many people in the workforce today have grown up with the Internet and see it as a normal part of everyday life. Posting where you are, what you are doing, who you are with – this may feel natural to do regardless of your age. But this amount of information sharing can be detrimental, with current and potential employers using what you post to form their opinions. This level of information can also benefit cyber criminals and thieves, who can use this information to access your online accounts and steal your identity as well as know your personal habits and whereabouts putting you in harms way or your belongings at risk for theft. Protect your online brand. Periodically conduct an online search to see what others find when searching for you. Regularly review what others are posting about you or on your profiles or accounts and remove questionable content. Manage your privacy settings. Ensure your privacy settings allow only people you know to access your profiles or posts. When possible, manage settings so that you can approve what others post about you on social networks. Keep your personal and professional lives separate on social networks by managing settings so that you only friend or follow the appropriate people for each. Remember though that you may have your privacy settings well in place, but your friends who post information about you may not have their privacy in lock-down, which exposes you to others you do not know. Use work devices appropriately. Do not visit inappropriate websites or conduct a lot of personal activity on company-owned devices. Check with the company information technology (IT) department before downloading any software to your work devices. Follow the company’s online and social media guidance and regulations. Again many employers don’t have policies in place, and some laws are grey when it comes to the topic. Think before you act. Be wary of emails and links from unknown sources. Many cyber criminals target employees in phishing scams to access company networks. Check with supervisors or the IT department before providing personal information to people – via phone or email – who are acting on behalf of the company or a vendor. Finally, keep in mind that others may also be looking at social media to determine if you are a good lending or business risk. Our online habits can have an unintentional adverse effect or negative impact here, now and unfortunately indefinitely. Hashtag-be careful, what you post can be used against you!

The Leadership Lincoln Program has prepared some of our community’s leaders for the past twenty years, and has over 600 alumni. Now in its 23rd year, the program brings together individuals who are involved in the surrounding communities and who want to develop their leadership abilities. The ten month program starts on September 10th, and continues through June 2015. Participants will meet for sessions that will focus on issues relevant to Lincoln County: such as History and Culture, Business & Industry, Education and more. Enrollment in the Leadership Lincoln Program is limited to 40 participants. For more information on the Leadership Lincoln Program, or to receive an application, contact the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce at 541-265-8801or the Oregon Coast Community College at 541-867-8521. You can also find an Application within this Communique. Application deadline for the Leadership Lincoln Program is Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014. Central Coast Kiwanis The Ambassadors met with the new Central Coast Kiwanis club on the morning of June 20th. Kiwanis is an international service club dedicat-ed to volunteering in a variety of ways to improve lives and serve local communities. Central Coast Kiwanis is currently focusing on their newest project, KISS (Kids In Need Shop-ping Spree.) This upcoming Decem-ber, Central Coast Kiwanis has made it a mission to provide school chil-dren with warm clothing such as shoes, coats, pants, underwear, etc. Teachers will help identify 30-50 children in need, and Kiwanis will take them on a KISS shopping spree. Fundraising for the December 10th KISS Event is currently undergoing and Kiwanis asks that you help clothe a child and consider making a donation. Check out the KISS Flyer in this Communique Newsletter.

Salon Ethos The Ambassadors visited Salon Ethos on July 11th. Salon Ethos is a Redken Elite Salon, which means this puts them in the top 5% of all

Redken Salons in the Country. The Elite ranking allows for some special treatment including leading hair products and exclu-sive staff trainings by top interna-tional stylists. Owner Liz Rose has been a Redken Artists Net-work Educator since 2001 and just recently was in New York to assist with Redkens 2015 “Next Seasons Trends.” Salon Ethos clientele benefit from the staff’s continual education and the ex-pertise they exhibit. One of the newest services at Ethos is the “Blow Dry Bar.” Clients will walk away with a look that will last for 3-days and only costs $32. Visit www.salon-ethos.com

REACH For Life

On the morning of July 18th, the Team of Ambassadors met with Larry Morris of REACH Air Medical Care Network. Reach For Life is Lincoln County’s air connection to medical services when local treatment cannot accommodate the severity of the need. The red colored Reach helicopters

are literally an ER in the sky and your life is in exceptional hands when you fly. Their national network has over 220 bases providing medical flight services to rural communities and with their Membership Program, you can receive coverage nearly anywhere you travel. The REACH Membership covers the full cost of you and your household members and costs $65/ year. A special rate is being offered to Newport Chamber

Members of $55/year; a mere pittance of the $48,000 average flight cost w/out a Reach Membership.

The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce Hospitality Committee is pleased to announce the June 2014 Employee of the Month as Matthew Huttchison. Matt is the Senior Maintenance Manager at Starfish Point and has been employed there for the last two and a half years. Resident Manager Michelle Hefley nominated Matt for the award saying that he is a dedicated employee who looks out for their business. “He is always willing to do anything that needs to be done on the property. He always has a positive attitude

and will help other employees anytime. He is willing to learn and wants more responsibility whenever it is available,” said Hefley. Congratulations, Matt on a job well done!

The Hospitality Committee is equally pleased to announce the July 2014 Employee of the Month as Tandi Smallwood. Tandi is a Recorder-Policy Specialist at Stewart Title Co. and was nominated for this award by Division President Melanie Sarazin. any project necessary to give her clients the best possible ser-vice. Melanie Sarazin referred to Tandi as “genuine, direct, dynamic and definitive” saying “she exempli-fies the service that our company asks for in our associates.” Melanie explained that “Tandi is a woman of many talents and abilities.
