Public Speaking Skills are Super Useful• Major part of some jobs

• At least minor part of nearly all college-degree jobs

• Shows up outside of work too• School board meeting• Homeowner’s association meeting• City Planning Commission• Presentation at your child’s school• Civic groups• Interviewed by reporter at political rally• Making a toast at a wedding

Small Group Discussion

1. Reasons maybe you dislike/avoid public speaking… some of the thoughts that come up when you hear you will have to give a talk/presentation

2. Strategies you've used, or might use, for preparing and executing a talk (e.g., good strategies for starting or concluding a talk, or what every good talk has)

3. Think of a talk you've really enjoyed– can you pinpoint what made it great?

#1 Organization• Need an introduction, body, and summary

• Typically:• 1 slide for outline/agenda• Main body• 1 slide for summary

Tell them what you’re going to tell themThen tell it to themThen tell them what you’ve told them

Highlights of Results:Impact on Delay and Capacity

• Developed MATLAB based framework to simulate end-to-end video cloud eco-system, including user arrival/departure from a cell, user video preferences and video request generation, proposed and traditional cache policies, and backhaul video scheduling.

• UPP based policies can achieve 0.75 cache hit ratio; R-UPP and P-UPP can reduce RAN backhaul need by 50% and 40% respectively.

• RAN micro-caching and scheduling significantly improves the probability of video requests that can meet initial delay requirements; For example, the probability of achieving an initial delay of 5 second or less is about 0.56 when no RAN cache is available, 0.66 for MPV, 0.74 for LRU, 0.80 for R-UPP, and 0.82 for P-UPP.

• User preference based RAN caching and scheduling can enhance video capacity by more than 100% compared to CDN caching, and by more than 35% compared to RAN micro-caching using conventional policies.

#2 Not too much text on a slide

• Rule of 5 • Max 5 bullets per slide • Max 5 words per bullet• Some people take rule of 7• Parallel construction (e.g., begin with all verbs or all nouns)

• Same rule of 5 beginning with verbs:• Use at most 5 bullets per slide• Use at most 5 words per bullet• Can consider alternate rule of 7• Begin each bullet the same way (parallel construction)

I don’t adhere to this… too restrictive

Preference-based RAN caching/scheduling:

• Improves probability of meeting initial delay requirements:– Example: probability initial delay < 5 sec is about

• 0.56 when no RAN cache available• 0.66 for MPV,• 0.74 for LRU, • 0.80 for R-UPP • 0.82 for P-UPP.

#3 Everything must be readable

• Don’t use tiny fonts• Everything must be large enough• Remember you youngsters have better vision!

• Be careful with background• Must contrast with font color• Must not be too busy

• Don’t draw stuff on top of your words

Page 19: 1 First Year Experience Fall 2015. 2 Outline Public speaking Courses/clubs on campus General advice + slide design My strategies Other Non-verbal Office.

#4 No full sentences

When you are making slides, you are not supposed to put in full sentences. You are also for the most part not supposed to include the use of prepositions, or of conjunctions, or of periods. You will find that the slide will be too busy and wordy if you put these things in, and it won’t help the audience absorb the information.

• NO full sentences prepositions conjunctions periods• Can make slide wordy• Hinder information absorption

20

Some of my strategies

• Make slides visually interesting• If they’re looking at the slide… they’re

not looking at me

• Put everything on the slide• If it’s written there, I can’t forget it• Appeals to visual learners as well as

auditory learners

Project Motivation & Goals

Some high-tech systems:• Sensors + displays• Fun compliance• Not aimed at accuracy• Not tailored for individuals

Guidance system to:• Improve home physical therapy (PT)• Accelerate rehabilitation• Provide guidance to patient & caregiver

Most PT patients get verbal & paper instructions:• No feedback• Not detailed• Not clear if doing it right

Current home therapy regimens inadequate:• Low compliance rates• Exercises done incorrectly• Lack of positive feedback

Ours:• Highly targeted to the individual• Highly accurate• Measuring force & movement• Detailed feedback

26

Sensors

1. Kinect camera for color and depth:

2. FingerTPS force sensors:• Worn on fingertips and palms

Can measure:• Electromyography (EMG) signals• Heart rate• Sweat• Many other things

3. Epidermal Electronics System (EES):• Goes on skin like temporary tattoo

Page 27: 1 First Year Experience Fall 2015. 2 Outline Public speaking Courses/clubs on campus General advice + slide design My strategies Other Non-verbal Office.

27

Some of my strategies

• Make slides visually interesting

• Put everything on the slide

• Tremendous amount of practice• Standing up, out loud, as if it’s the real thing

• Bottle of water handy

• Beforehand – good posture, good breathing

Quick Write

1. What is the main point that Amy Cuddy makes in her TED talk?

2. Describe some communication (verbal or non-verbal) that you or your friends do, which seems fine in your group, but which might be negatively viewed by people of your parents’ generation

Page 30: 1 First Year Experience Fall 2015. 2 Outline Public speaking Courses/clubs on campus General advice + slide design My strategies Other Non-verbal Office.

30

Office Hours, Evaluations

• Office Hours: Most students hardly ever go

• Informal contacts with faculty can be super valuable• Some day you might need a reference letter

• Evaluations:• They are given a lot of weight in promotions• Most professors read them and appreciate the

constructive feedback• Don’t be cruel, “escaped gorilla”

Page 31: 1 First Year Experience Fall 2015. 2 Outline Public speaking Courses/clubs on campus General advice + slide design My strategies Other Non-verbal Office.

31

Non-verbal Communication

• Amy Cuddy:• Comments?

• Generational differences?• Clothing: Be conscious of the statement that

you’re making• Gum: Don’t chew while you’re presenting• Texting/Laptops in class: Professors may think

you’re being rude, different perception of multi-tasking

Page 32: 1 First Year Experience Fall 2015. 2 Outline Public speaking Courses/clubs on campus General advice + slide design My strategies Other Non-verbal Office.

32

E-mail to a Professor• Don’t send e-mail from an inappropriate username• Subject line: make it specific

• TMC1: Lisa Smith - question about FOCUS2 homework

• Greeting: use correct title• Dear Prof. Jones, …

• Main body• Organized, to the point• Spell check

• Polite ending: e.g., Thank you for your time• Avoid latest sign off trends (lol, ttfn, ttyl, …)• Give first name, last name, PID, section number

For most professors, e-mailis the BEST form of comm.

But some professors don’tread e-mail at all…

Page 33: 1 First Year Experience Fall 2015. 2 Outline Public speaking Courses/clubs on campus General advice + slide design My strategies Other Non-verbal Office.

33

E-mail Homework: due Nov 30• Write actual e-mail to one of your other professors

• Include your DL as bcc• Doesn’t matter what subject is• DL will check that you’ve done everything right regarding

subject line, greeting, spelling, first + last name, etc.

• Write artificial e-mail (send to your DL) on one of the following prompts, as if writing to a professor:

• TA is picking on me unfairly• Don’t understand the material even though I’m doing all

the reading and coming to class
