IEC 61280-4-1

• The EF value at 15 um equals the ratio between the amount of light transmitted in that middle part and the total amount of light emitted into the whole core (yellow circle).

Amount of light (From center to radius of core)

Total light in the fibre core EF value =

Ex. EF value at 15um = 0.655

65.5% of light in the area of (15um radius)

Parameter to standardizing the launch condition of the fibre

How to read the Encircled Flux Graph

Source: Wikipedia

Encircled Flux is a measure of light coupled into the Optical Fibre as a function of distance from the center of the core

Both light source and jumper must meet EF requirement

EF requirement

Why Encircle Flux

• Attenuation measurement variations can occur when two similar light sources or different launch cords are used.

• Insertion Loss/Connector specification getting tigher as network equipment reaches 10 gigabit.

– With loss limits this tight, uncertainty of measurement is key in making a safe pass/fail judgment

• EF is a way of standardizing the launch condition in Fibre

• Measurement variation should be less than ±10 % (on a dB basis)

Launch Condition

VCSEL Light Source

LED Light Source

Ideal launch conditions should occur if the light is distributed throughout the whole fiber core

Test results in higher attenuation than actual (Overfill)

Test results in lower attenuation than actual (Underfill or restrictive)

EF Launch Condition at the core

Cladding

Core

Core

Core

Overfilled Launch Condition

• Overfill launch puts too much power into cladding and higher order modes

• Higher order modes and more power are lost at connection

• Higher loss value than actual loss

Underfilled Launch Condition

• Little power in higher order modes in fibre core.

• Minimal power loss at connections

• Lower loss value than actual loss

Encircle Flux Launch Condition

• Just the right amount of light in the higher order modes and evenly distribution of light in fiber core.

• An accurate loss value.
