Assessment of the developmental needs of the crops entrusted
Formulation of Central Sector / Centrally Sponsored Schemes and implementation of the same either directly or
through the Implementing Agencies
Monitoring of the Schemes and coordinating the developmental activities.
Rendering technical assistance to State Governments and other agencies on commodity development programmes.
Collection and compilation of all the statistics related to the crops and dissemination of the same to various agencies
Keeping liaison with the research institutes and extension agencies and acting as a two-way channel in the transfer of technology.
Undertaking the publicity and propaganda works relating to the commodities.

TECHNOLOGY DISSEMINATION THROUGH FRONTLINE DEMONSTRATION
i. Organic farmingIt is proposed to establish 25 frontline demonstration plots in
various university centres for the technology dissemination of organic cultivation of various spice crops.
ii. Multi-species cropping system in Arecanut gardenIntroduction of multi-species cropping in arecanut garden aimed
at increasing the net returns from unit area will help the farmers to withstand the fluctuating prices of arecanut. Hence it is proposed to establish front line demonstration plots for demonstration of multi-species cropping in arecanut gardens.

National workshops on methodological issues in spices statistics
There is lot of discrepancies in the estimates of area and production of spices among different agencies involved in the country. It is felt that all these agencies to review the existing methodology and develop a refined and uniform methodology to be adopted throughout the country. For this a series of meetings and workshops are required. It is proposed to earmark Rs 3.00 lakhs for this purpose.
