Desktop Standards
Survey
Alessandra Ciocio/Rosemary EvanoffCSAC, February 7, 2003
2
Background
Diana’s last CSAC presentation on Desktop Standards from the Business Application Perspective:
• Given the funding situation
– Strict Standardization would allow high level of support
– No Standardization would result in low level of support
• Lifeline Applications support limited by Vendor Product Functionality• Costly to develop and maintain in-house• Moving towards integrated Vendor-provided Solutions with minimum customizations
– Reduced maintenance costs
– Increased operational efficiency for end-user• Dependent on Vendor Product strategy
– Vendors moving towards PC-only solutions
• Money spent on supporting non-PC users is money not spent elsewhere with potential greater value to the lab (BLIS, Backup, Spam Blocking, Helpdesk)
3
Motivation for a Survey
• We need to learn – How many non-PC users need to access each lifeline business application– How frequently do they need access to these applications– How critical it is for them to access these applications from their primary
(non-PC) desktop computers– Alternatives to access these applications:
