Now we move on to… Designing a coherent programme of sessions
that is relevant for the intended audience: logistics of preparing/running a training course the objectives and content of the course. the role of a Training Needs Assessment
Opportunity to restructure No-name Training Course or plan short training course from scratch.

Brainstorm (Activity 2)
In small groups of 5 or 6, have a 15-minute brainstorm on what are the key points to consider when planning a course.
All ideas should be recorded in a list Spend a further 15 minutes building on the
list and refining it into categories. Compare your list to the one outlined in the
following slides

Trainers – Who are they? Are they experienced in teaching the material? What will
their tasks be? - demonstrators, lecturers…
How many of them do we need? What is their availability (Are there any back-up staff?)
Timing – When suits the organisation? Does it suit the trainers? Are there any constraints? Does it allow time for materials to be developed?

Do you need to get datasets or case studies from the organisation?
Who do you need to talk to? Do the datasets need data management? Who will do it?
Resources – What resources do you need? (a) to prepare and (b) to present Are they readily available? Do you have permission to use them?
Administration – Copying of notes, course certificates… Who will do it? How much will it cost? Where can it be done?

Logistics – Lunches, teas, coffees, accommodation, transportation… Who will do it? How much will it cost?
Advertising / Inviting people to attend / Registration. How should it be done? Where should it be done? Who is the target audience? How much will you charge?
Who is paying for it? Will it be one organisation or individual participants?

Timing (Activity 3)
Get into the same groups Imagine that you have 3 months to plan a
training course. Create a Gant chart (see practical sheet)
including all the stages of course development.
Indicate when each of the tasks above needs to start and when it needs to be completed by.

Training needs assessment
Why is assessing training needs important? To identify the skills which need developing. To identify weaknesses in the organisation
and thus make the first step towards strengthening them.
To ensure all members of staff get the opportunity to fulfil their role.
To minimise expenditure and maximise gain.

Creating a training programme (Activity 5)
Back in the same groups participant must now chose one of the four options in activity 5.
They must then follow the steps in this activity to create the outline of a training programme.
