Coconut Sugar & Coconut Syrup from Indonesia 1

2

Coconut Sugar is, quite literally, crafted by hand by smallholder farmers and their families. Organic Coconut Sugar serves as the main source of income for many farmers.

The farmers use a selection process that is crucial for the longevity of the tree, for the production of food and coconuts for the farmers, and for sustaining the natural growth process of the environment. This process has minimal impact on the trees and surrounding environment due to the farmers’ understanding and mindfulness of sustainability practices. The farmers follow a process of taking only what is needed from the trees so that they can continue to produce organic products for years to come, while minimizing their environmental impact.

Each farmer takes great care and pride in the treatment of their organic coconut trees. Many farmers have trees which are between 25-40 years old with some trees reaching up to 60 years.

Our organic coconut sugar is sourced from Indonesia where it is collected from the sugary sap of the organic coconut palms. We work with over 3,000 farmers who collect the nectar of the flowers and process it into organic coconut sugar. Each farmer has an average of 25 trees that they use for collection and coconut production. The farmers scale the trees, selectively wrap bundles of coconut palm flowers and collect the nectar into the bamboo collectors. They are careful to only collect from flower bundles on specific trees in order to let other trees continue their growth into mature coconuts. The nectar is collected twice a day, in the morning and afternoon.

International Safety StandardsTradin Organic’s partners in Indonesia are all certified organic Coconut Sugar processing facilities. Further processing includes weighing, coding, recording, grading according to colour and dryness level. The cooperatives that Tradin Organic works with were set up by European development agencies and were strictly based on sustainable and organic farming practices. The EU Organic certification was issued in 2011 by Control Union, a Dutch certifier. In early 2012 the second certification was issued under the USDA NOP standard.

Both facilities have the C-SCAN GHF installed, an innovative metal detector made in Germany, which detects and removes ferrous and nonferrous metals.Coconut syrup is further processed and refined in the Netherlands.

Sieving, drying and packaging at farmers level, then sugar is being delivered to CPU.

Stirring until the sugar turns dry and crusted, this then turns into granular sugar.

Coconut sap is taken twice in a day, then sieved and boiled while adding organic coconut oil until sap consistency changes to jelled and brown colored.

Certificates

All our partners in Indonesia are certified organic Coconut Sugar processing facilities.

The facilities source sugar from coops in Purwokerto (middle Java) and Pacitan (east Java). These cooperations were set up by European development agencies and were strictly based on sustainable and organic farming practices.

The EU Organic certification was issued in 2011 by Control Union, a Dutch certifier. In early 2012 the second certification was issued under the USDA NOP standard.
