COOK Cemetery

(previously unlisted ) ]

A paper by Frost or Bicknell says that there was a cemetery near the Stephen Cook (1840-1860)/Elizah Lawrell (1870-1872) residence, at a sharp jog in Baker Lane, but it has not been

found. This could be the burial site of John and Abigail Cook, their son John Cook (1786-1841), and his wife Mary (Garey) Cook (1786-1859) – see Boyle p. 83. (The paper also says that in

addition to the cemetery near the Cook/Lawrell residence, there was another cemetery “beyond” on Baker Lane. That could refer to the Deacon Ahira Baker Cemetery, the Baker Lane Cemetery,

or an unknown cemetery.

The cemetery is overgrown and deteriorating, but only 2 footstones are missing. The Fergusons are buried at the SW end, the Fernalds at the NE end, with an empty section in

between. Both matriarchs were Fergusons, so these two families are probably cousins.

section, 2 are in the Ferguson section. Possibilities: - Margery Fernald (say 1837 – 1849) [James Fernald’s daughter] - Charles Ferguson (~1810-1831) [Joshua Ferguson’s son] - Betsey (Ferguson) Fernald (1804-1856) [Joshua Ferguson’s daughter] – died by suicide –

Betsey Ferguson married Frederick B. Fernald, who was a brother of the above patriarch James Fernald

N43°32.818’ W70°50.090’ This cemetery is large and very overgrown. The three Garvin headstones are broken, buried and no longer legible. There may be more unidentified headstones; there are surely more footstones. GARVIN, Alva, Son of Col. Stephen & Lucy Garvin, Died April 28, 1851, Aged 20y GARVIN, Henry, Son of Col. Stephen & Lucy Garvin, Died March 1856, Aged 19y GARVIN, Lucy T. [Neal], wife of Col. Stephen Garvin,) [22 Dec 1798 - 15 Apr 1857] [Where is Stephen Garvin buried? PILSBURY, Charles, Son of Simon & Lydia B Pilsbury, Died Nov. 9, 1853, Aged 1y 11m . x8+ UNIDENTIFIED graves, for only 2-3 of which I have suggested identifications:

- 5-7 contiguous raised graves in the westernmost (“first”) row along with (and South of) Lucy, Henry and Alva Garvin; 5 of these graves have field headstones; 1 has no headstone; no footstones were discovered for any graves in the hasty examination

o Surely Lydia (Bartlett) Neal (~1768-1811) is buried in this row [John Neal’s first wife and Lydia B. (Garvin) Pilsbury’s mother]

o Surely Patience (Young) (Curtis) (Lowe) Neal (say 1765 – 1853) is buried in this row [John Neal’s second wife and Lydia B. (Garvin) Pilsbury’s step-mother]

o We would definitely expect John Neal (1768-1862) to be buried here, but he died in 1862, so an inscribed marker would be expected [John Neal was Lydia B. (Garvin) Pilsbury’s father] – if he is buried here, the cemetery should be named after him

- 1? raised grave in the westernmost (“first”) row along with (and North of) Lucy, Henry and Alva Garvin; it has no headstone; no footstone was discovered in the hasty examination

- 3 contiguous graves in the second row, 1 with a field headstone and adult field footstone; 1 with no marker; 1 with a field headstone and child’s field footstone

pTHOMPSON, William Jr. Cemetery say 371 County Road, on the brow of a rise, next to the NE side of the road

L/L? There is a red dot for this cemetery on the Bicknell map, but the dot should have been placed

nearly across the road from the Furnald (1856)/ Jason Dame (1872) residence, not halfway between the Lewis Trafton (1872) and Jason Dame (1872) residences.

This cemetery needs to be explored for graves. But has not been found

The pFurnald (1856)/Jason Dame (1872) foundation is across the road to the SW. If it was the residence of Frederick B. Fernald in 1854 and 1856, then it was originally the residence of William Thompson Jr., who occupied it during the years 1813-1853. Another pFoundation is just SE of the cemetery – it apparently no longer existed by the time the 1856 and 1872 maps were created; it could have contributed burials to this cemetery, but it was not the William

36

Thompson Jr (1813-1853)/Frederick Fernald (1854, 1856) residence. The pLewis Trafton (1856, 1872) residence does not appear to have produced any burials.

Possible burials in this cemetery:

- William Thompson Jr (~1768-1853) - Mary (Davis) Thompson (d 1805) [William’s 1st wife] - Olive (Cousens) Thompson (~1772-1848/9) [William’s 2nd wife]

“TRAFTON, I.” Cemetery

x 150’? SE? of N43°33.240’, W070°48.639’ This cemetery has not been found. The area has been logged at least twice since Bicknell put a red dot on his map to show the location of this cemetery. The coordinates reported above mark the location of the I. Trafton (1856)/H. Winn [1872] foundation10 (150’ from the Gulf Road), which surely produced the burials for this cemetery. Bicknell

placed his red dot for the cemetery to the SE of the H. Winn residence.

I. Trafton (1856)/H. Winn [1872] foundation is located at 43°33.240’, W070°48.639’. Need to determine who lived there that would have produced burials for this cemetery.

xDrive to the driveway at 61 Gulf Road, then walk 350’ SW into the woods.

There is a small outbuilding in the driveway, but it appears to date from the early 20th century. No foundation for the Capt. Joshua Trafton (~1783)/Nathaniel Pillsbury/Bridgett (Davis) Pilsbury (till 1837)/Betsey (Pillsbury) Roberts (1837-1860+)/Miss Bridgett (Davis) Pilsbury (1856)/A. N. Pettingell (1872) residence has been found. A house foundation belonging to unknown residents is across the Gulf Road, 125’ NNE of the driveway at 61 Gulf Road; it does not appear on the 1856 and 1872 maps. Brothers Joshua and Lemuel Trafton were neighbors in the 1790 census; Lemuel lived to the NW of Joshua and this cemetery, on Nason Rd in the Lemuel Trafton (~1783-1817)/David Goodwin (1854, 1856, 1872) residence, which is not far from where Boyle (p. 675) said Lemuel lived: “His [Lemuel’s] property appears to have been in the Owl’s Nest area of town.”
