Medical Students
Over the past five years
we have had a number
of medical students
from Western Sydney
University visit the
school as part of their
Paediatric cycle while
spending the year
working in Bathurst and
Orange hospitals. We
have found this to be a
valuable experience for
the medical students,
our students and our
staff. This year again we
have the students
visiting on a number of
Wednesday afternoons.
We look forward to
continuing this
beneficial program.
Sport Sport Sport
On top of our regular
weekly sports program
we have our swimming
carnival, two indoor
cricket carnivals and
regular visits from the
local Cricket Australia
representatives. We
are very active!
Take care, Neil
IEP Meetings a Winner
My thanks to everyone
who has been or will be
attending Individual
Education Plan
meetings. These have
been very successful. It
is so important that
families and carers
have input into the
planning and
determining priorities
for our students. I
enjoy seeing so many
happy faces coming and
going as the teachers
meet with each of you.
It is also very important
for your children to
know that you have an
interest in what
happens to them at
school. A great start to
the year!
Sentral Data Software
Some of you may be
familiar with this
through other schools.
Carenne is now using
this software to safely
manage our data
collection, analysis and
storage.
PBL High Flyers
It has been wonderful
to attend the
assemblies this term
and see so many
students earning
awards for Being Safe,
Being Respectful and
Being Learners. It has
been such a successful
start to the year that I
have already presented
three Principal’s PBL
Bronze Awards! What
an effort! Our new
students have really
settled in well and have
been amongst the
weekly award winners
too. We are already
looking forward to our
first PBL reward Day
later in the term. My
thanks to Mrs
McDonald and Ms
Okello who have taken
a break from the PBL
committee this year.
They have both made
significant contributions
over their years of
involvement. Mrs
McDonald was our
original and only PBL
Creative Director.

PBL Super Stars
Our PBL Super Stars wall is
back up and running this
term. Our Super Stars wall
showcases those students
and staff who have shown
great commitment to PBL.
So far we have celebrated
students who are “being a
good friend”, “being calm”
and “caring for things”. We
have also thanked Mr Ryan
for watering the grass
during the holidays and Ms
Baskerville for making sure
all of our staff are up to
date with their CPR and
Anaphylaxis. Even Ollie
featured on our PBL Super
Stars wall for “being a good
friend” and helping
students on the bus. Make
sure you check out our PBL
Super Stars board!
Mandatory Training
On our first day back this
term, all staff were involved
in professional learning
focusing on student
wellbeing and our
mandatory training that we
undertake at the start of
every year. This included
Code of Conduct, CPR and
Anaphylaxis. A big thanks
to Ms Baskerville who spent
a number of days last year
being trained so she could
train us!
Great App
Talking about keeping
ourselves safe, a great app
that you might be interested
in is Emergency +
It is a free app for Apple and
Android phones developed by
emergency services. It uses
your phone’s GPS to give you
your location. Might just
help you out in an emergency,
especially if you’re unsure of
your exact location.
Easter Hat and Art Parade
This year our Easter Hat and
Art Parade is on Thursday 6th
April at 2:00pm. All parents,
friends, and Carenne
Community are invited to
attend. Students will be
making hats or art work in
class for this parade. We look
forward to seeing you then.
Carenne Facebook hits 1000!
When we launched our
Carenne Facebook page back
in May 2015 we hoped that
this would be a good way to
reach our parents, carers and
the greater community. We
anticipated that if we got 200
likes then we would be
considered a success on
Facebook! But a year and a
half later, 100s of posts and
even more photos, we have
now hit 1022 likes!
We love being able to share
not only the wonderful things
our students do each and
every day but also some of the
events that impact us as a
school. The students love
having their photos taken,
helping to write the posts and
then sharing their stories with
you at home. If you would like
to see any stories from our
school, that we haven’t
covered, please let us know.
See you in cyber world!

WOW! What a great few weeks back. Our new friends Lachlan and Noah are settling into
Kindergarten and love coming to big school every day.
This term we have been learning about farm animals. James and Noah are very good at
remembering what sound each animal makes. DJ and Adison always remember the signs for our
animals too. We are back into practicing our counting and number recognition. Tallon loves
counting activities, especially when we use our blocks and jumping frogs. Lachlan enjoys singing
our daily jolly phonics and counting songs too. We are doing so much great learning and are so
excited for the rest of the year.
Look at me

I love coming to
Carenne.
Stir, stir, stir!
James and Lachlan love

Class Mc have had a very settled start to
the new school year and as our new
Superhero Minion display says “A Minion
reasons to Love Class MC”.
Our learning timetable is very busy with lots
of work in literacy, numeracy, PBL, music,
bike riding, sport, handwriting and
shopping, to mention just a few!
Class Mc are learning the names of the
days, months and seasons and our
classroom noticeboard reminds us of those
extra special activities that we have
throughout the week.
We have been working on our daily diary tasks each morning with improved handwriting and
scissor skills by everybody, well done Class Mc! Class Mc have been practising our PBL rules to be
Safe, Respectful SUPER Learners. Congratulations to Gus, Saxon, Bligh, Alex, Adam, Seth and
Anthony for being such SUPER Learners!

CLASS C
Kerryn Cafe (Teacher)
Karina Molenkamp (SLSO)
Class C have had a great start to the new school year. We have been so impressed with how
effortlessly all of the students have settled back into the school routine.
This year we continue to combine with Class F in the middle session for literacy and numeracy
groups. We complete writing activities, sight word activities, read readers, play number games and
complete written tasks. We have been pleased to see how well all of the children are participating
in these activities. We have been impressed with their group work skills as well as the time and care
they are taking with their work. Well done everyone!
Each Friday we have use of the school bus and we go to Bernardi’s to buy our shopping for the
week. We have been buying ingredients for our cooking session each Friday afternoon. So far we
have made Pikelets, Fruit Salad Skewers and Mini Pizzas. We have some fabulous chefs in the class
who both cook and devour their cooking with great enthusiasm! We look forward to preparing
some other yummy creations during these sessions.

CLASS F
Sue Flude (Teacher)
Emma Rush (SLSO)
Class F are having a busy term. We are continuing to work with Class C in literacy and maths
groups. We are amazed at how well everybody has adapted to the new group structure and are
working really hard. Class F have been completing a PD unit on ‘making the right choice’ in the
classroom, in the playground, in the community and at home. We are having wonderful
participation and group discussions using pictures of people and whether they are making the
right choice and how we can do the same. Whilst it has been hot we have been keeping fit by
doing kids cosmic yoga and following ’just dance’ video clips. Its been great to have Lisa come
back and teach us music and share her instruments. We have had fun cooking on Fridays. We
have used new cooking skills to measure and prepare gingerbread men, fruit kebabs and pikelets.
All the children are being very safe using kitchen utensils and taking turns. Most of all they have
enjoyed eating their masterpieces!

CLASS W
Myles Woodward (Teacher)
Stephanie Cupples/Donna Kennedy (SLSO)
Class W have been discussing the similarities and differences of our homes and family structures,
looking at our family members and the different areas we live in. To illustrate these differences we
have begun to construct models of our individual homes out of cedar strips. We searched on the
internet to find images of our homes and have used these to plan and create our models. The
construction process will be ongoing throughout the Term and we are eager to see the
development of our homes by utilising sand from the playground and colouring it to represent the
grass, concrete and dirt areas. It is fascinating to see the details that all the children insist on
having.
Class W were very lucky to experience bushwalking through Aspire on Monday, 20th February. All
of the students were fantastic and were wonderful representatives of Carenne School!

CLASS B
Anne Baskerville/Meg Turner-Mann (Teacher)
Kym Tattersall (SLSO)
Hi everyone, Class B have been very busy so far this term. We are learning all about Mini Beasts
and focusing our activities on the book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. We have made some very
delicious eatable caterpillars and butterflies using a variety of fruit. Another fun activity we did
as a class was to make a life cycle of the butterfly sensory bin. We used spiral, shell and bowtie
pasta and dyed them different colours and then mixed them all together in a tub. Its great fun
playing with it and we can sort it into colours and in shapes.
We have had a fun filled start to the year. See you soon, take care.

CLASS K
Janelle Kemp/Meg Turner-Mann (Teacher)
Juliette van Emmerik/Donna Kennedy (SLSO)
Class K have had a great start to 2017. We have a wonderful group of students who are all
working very hard. This term we have started a unit of work on the ”Big Things in Australia”; and
gosh there are lots of them. We are lucky to have our very own “Big Goldpanner” in Bathurst. All
the students in Class K enjoyed visiting him and having their photo taken. We are looking at
famous monuments from our history such as the Colosseum in Rome and the Pyramids in Egypt.
Miss Meg has started a cooking program with the students on Friday and they have already
enjoyed making banana cake. We also look forward to our Year 10 and 11 students starting
Work Experience next week.

CLASS R
Adam Ryan (Teacher)
Paula Hundy/Julie Buining (SLSO)
It has been a fast paced start to 2017, with everyone settling in to Class R nicely. We have
completed some fantastic art works which have been used to decorate our lovely new
classroom . This year Class R will be doing regular maintenance on the pushbikes that are used by
the whole school. The boys have learnt how to check the tyre pressures, grease the chains and
clean the shed. In the coming weeks we will progress to changing tubes and fixing brakes. We
have started a unit in Agriculture on beef and lamb and we will focus on how our food goes from
paddock to plate. In addition the class will be helping class A prepare the cattle for the Royal
Bathurst Show. We have had a frequent visitor to class R, in the form of Ollie the Therapy Dog.
His presence has been great and the class really enjoy having him around. The swimming carnival
has come and gone and we couldn't be more proud of how the boys conducted themselves. They
all tried their best, competed strongly and displayed great sportsmanship. This year we will
continue to learn about healthy eating, food preparation, hygiene and how to cook for ourselves.
We have already cooked some tasty dishes and the boys and the executives look forward to our
weekly creations.

CLASS S
Peta Sykes/Sue Wark (Teacher)
Kathleen Matheson (SLSO)
Class S has been busy getting to know our daily timetable and our three new students. Along with
our usual class subjects we have had Dogs for Diggers visiting which all the boys took great
enjoyment in. They will be joining us ever three weeks this term. The boys learn how to approach
the dogs and how to act around them. The dogs also showed us some really awesome tricks.
Class S have also been practicing our food preparation and hygiene skills for next term when we will
be running the Canteen Program for the whole school every Wednesday. The boys have made
pizzas and Spaghetti Bolognese so far. Other things the boys will take part in are our weekly
shopping visits on Tuesday, cricket practice skills on a Tuesday morning for the next 4 weeks and
bike riding on a Friday.

CLASS N
Terry Neal (Teacher)
Marg Rowe/Sam Schofield (SLSO)
We have had a great start to Term 1 and have begun to start our Stage 5 and 6 curriculum work.
It was great to meet and talk to all our parents at our recent IEP meetings. We would like to
welcome Matty to Class N, Matty is completing school in Year 12 this year, and has become a
School Leader as well! We look forward to the start of our Work Experience program plus our
weekly community access trips, visits to the supermarket, sport and cooking lessons. Great to see
Jess and Gabe enjoying their participation in the Carenne Swimming Carnival.

CLASS O
Christine Okello/Sue Wark (Teacher)
Di Klavins/Julie Buining (SLSO)
This term we have taken time off class to visit the Bathurst Library. During our visits, we saw lots
of people lined up to borrow books, while others were spending time on laptops and computers.
It is important that those who wish to read to improve their minds or provide themselves with
new skills can have access to books to do so. They also have access to computers, where good
material is now available on the net. We are indeed grateful that Bathurst has such facilities for
us to use. While we were there, we also had a chance to try our skills on the humongous
chessboard.
In science, we have a 3D Mira-scope. The equipment captures light of an object and then
project it as a three-dimensional image. We have lots of fun seeing how light is reflected and
the image of a toy frog is lifted, giving an impression of a frog sitting on top of the dish.
Amazing!

CLASS L
Ros Luther/Ellen Sutton (Teacher)
Melinda Gavin/Donna Kennedy (SLSO)
Class L have been so busy settling in and are keeping extra busy with lots of work already.
Assessments have been completed and we are looking forward to a fantastic year this year. Our
new School Leaders are very excited about helping their fellow school mates and are looking
forward to their Leaders Induction in Week 6. We hope their families and friends can make it to
celebrate with us.
This term we have been learning about the history of Great Britain with Mrs Sutton and Mrs
Kennedy and have made a life-sized model of a knight in shining armour, as well as looking at
castles and designing our own.
We have also been learning about water and how important it is for our daily lives.
At lunchtime some of us have been using the library as an alternative to going out to the
playground. We have lots of things to do in there such as craft, jigsaws, colouring in and just
relaxing!!

CLASS A
Michael Auld (Teacher)
Michael Phillips (SLSO)
Class A would like to welcome three new students to Class A - Michael, Cain and Jacob.
The students have been discussing activities and programs that they would like to participate in
during the year.
The beginning of the term the class has been working their way through an online program called
Brainology. This program teaches the students how the brain works and how it gets stronger and
smarter through effort and learning. They also learn about and practice effective strategies to
accelerate learning and growth. We have all achieved “Brain Master “ level and are attempting to
put some of the practices and strategies into place.
A number of students have already commenced TAFE including Hospitality and Motor Mechanics.
TAFE provides a wonderful education experience for our senior students. I would like to thank Mrs
Luther for organising the TAFE programs.
The students also had a great time at the school swimming carnival. Class A students not only took
part in the swimming but also helped the other students. Mr Adam Ryan and Ms Peta Sykes did a
wonderful job organising the carnival.
Class A would like to congratulate Will. He is one of the final eight students from over 200 people
who have competed for a scholarship for a pilot’s licence. He has undertaken interviews and a
trial flight. We wish Will all the best in the final rounds.
We would like to thank Matt Rattray. We were invited to his farm where the students fed his herd
of miniature horses and played on his pinball machines. Matt is a collector of old arcade
technology and rebuilds these machines. The students were very interested in his hobby.
We would like to thank all the parents and carers who have provided the time and input into the
child’s program for this year. It is great to be able to talk to parents about their child’s educational
needs.

Macquarie Tutorial Centre
Nadine Dwyer/Adam Lange/Stephen McKinley (Teacher)
Jodie Toomey/Khiara Ryan (SLSO)
Welcome back to all of our Macquarie Tutorial Centre community. It has been lovely to see the
students return to school with an enthusiasm for school.
This year we welcome Mrs Khiara Ryan and Mr Aaron Lange to the Tutorial Centre. They are both
proving to be exceptional people who have a love of learning and an exceptional dedication to
the students.
We do have a busy term ahead of us, beginning with some students who were assistants at the
Carenne School Swimming Carnival held the 22nd of February. These students have been chosen
to assist due to their outstanding behaviour and empathic attitude to others. Finally I would like
to remind everyone that we are a PBL school and our expectations are Be Safe, Be a Learner, Be
Respectful.
The students have been
experimenting with colours that
clash and have re-worked a van
Gogh masterpiece. Starry Night
has never looked so psychedelic.

Sport and Recreation
Terry Neal
We have had a hot and dry start to our sport and recreation, but we are still participating and enjoying
playing our summer sports and fun. The junior school have started their own class sports programs each
week as well as the senior school. Great to see so many students participating in the Carenne Swimming
Carnival, trying their best to swim strong and competitively and most of all having fun in the cool water.
Miss Sykes has organised it this year and done a great job, with a really exciting and fun day, for all. We
have also begun our regular weekly sports sessions and have begun with cricket. Matt Taberner, from
NSW Country Cricket, has been booked for our School Sports Australia program for this Term, and has
assisted with cricket at George Park each Tuesday morning with the senior school students. We also start
our representative sports program next Tuesday, with the secondary aged students school rep team
contesting the 2017 Regional Indoor Cricket Carnival, at the Bathurst Indoor sports Stadium. Mr Ryan and
Mr Woodward will be selecting their teams, this week.
