Commodore’s Comments The days are getting longer and we can only
hope that the worst of winter is in our quar-
ter wake! Unfortunately this time of year
the weather can be challenging, but the
promise of spring and summer ahead keeps
us encouraged for warmer days to come!
Our annual club shutdown is in the
books. No large projects were done, but
many small issues were addressed this year.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the
members who put in numerous hours to
make our club more functional and beauti-
ful for the year ahead. The list of items that
need attention at the club never ends, but we truly made a huge dent in
it during this much-needed shutdown. Next year we may structure
shutdown a little differently so that we do not need to be closed for
almost two weeks in a row and are better able to serve our members!
We also had a very nice get together on a Saturday morning
when the temperature was 0º F to replace a deicer that had failed and
gotten frozen into the ice. Some of the bracing that holds those deicers
in place also needed to be replaced as the brutally cold temperatures
have really done a number on the equipment. I must say, it is days like
this that truly make me proud to be a member of this club! Nothing is
better than members coming together in adverse conditions to fix a
problem. We may not have had the best working conditions, but the
crew still found time to have some fun! Just ask Steve Meicher why
you should be careful what you ask for; you just might get it!
So whether you went to the Boat Show to look over all that is
new and exciting or if you have been just picking away at your “to
do” list for the upcoming boating season, we are headed in the right
direction and it won’t be long now! There are some really great events
planned for you in the month of February that you will not want to
miss. It all gets started on 10 February with the annual Sailing Ban-
quet. This is more than just an awards ceremony. It is a celebration of
the previous year’s accomplishments and a way for us all to look for-
ward to the boating season ahead of us. I have many fond memories
from this event throughout the years. Spinnakers hanging from the
rafters in the main hall, the house packed full of happy sailors eager to
share their stories from their times on the water, and the bar is four
deep to get a drink in a pewter mug! This event is for all members,
even if you do not race. Please join us for what has historically been
one of the club’s top events of the year!
See you at our club!
~Commodore Mike

Report of the Barge Committee—Help the Queen of Sheba get a New Derrick
The committee has met numerous times since the completion of the barge hull re-
build. The committee is pleased to announce the design concept for the derrick has
been chosen and is proceeding to finalization. Construction will commence this
spring with completion prior to pier work commencement. The design is based on
a small US Navy World War II work boat. A Power point presentation was given
at the January Membership meeting. A model demonstrated the concept and ad-
vantages of the design for SYC applications. The derrick will lift 4,000 pounds,
which should be adequate for the club’s needs by providing a stable platform for
pier work.
The board has approved the project and a companion fund raising
plan. The fund raising goal is $1,100.00. For a donation of $10.00 or more,
everyone contributing will receive a small piece of 70+ year old oak salvaged
from the previous barge derrick boom. This is a rare piece of SYC history,
having served the construction of
the main pier starting in 1946. In
addition, all donors of money, in
materials, or labor will have their
initials etched on another plaque
to be mounted on the stern along-
side the existing plaque.
The donation model of the old barge has been reinstalled at the
east end of the bar and is just waiting for your donation. Or if you prefer,
you can add your contribution to your monthly statement by so designat-
ing the amount. Instructions for the model donations are:
Write your name on a slip of the paper provided and staple it to your
sawbuck (or more!) and deposit it in the slot.
Help yourself to a historic piece of the oak cut from the Queen of Sheba’s old boom.
Your name with be etched on the new plaque that will be placed on the barge.

The barge is headed downstream and it must be spring time in
the 1970s after the catwalk removal. The piles on the Reiss
dock are coal. Note the outboard power.

2018 Para World Sailing Championships
to be held in Sheboygan in September
Sheboygan, Wisconsin will host the 2018 Para World Sailing Championships. The 16-22 September event, will be
hosted jointly by World Sailing, Sail Sheboygan, and the Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan (SEAS).
The event continues the efforts of SEAS to become a hub for adaptive sailing for children and adults with cogni-
tive or physical disabilities. “World Sailing is delighted that Sheboygan will be hosting the 2018 edition of the Para
World Sailing Championships,” said Para World Sailing Manager Massimo Dighe. “Sheboygan has an excellent
track record of hosting major international sailing events. From the Nations Cup Grand Final to the Women’s and
Blind Match Racing World Championships, the team on the ground and the town know what it takes to welcome top
class sailors. The facilities are exceptional and I am sure the sailors attending will receive a warm welcome.”
Tom Atkins of Sail Sheboygan said hosting the 2018 Para Worlds helps fulfill Sail Sheboygan’s mission of bring-
ing national and international competition to Sheboygan. In addition, it contributes to a commitment to facilitate
adaptive sailing at all levels, from beginner sailors to competitors.
At World Sailing’s upcoming Annual Conference in Mexico, the future of the Para World Sailing will be dis-
cussed and debated as the sport aims for reinstatement into the Paralympic Games Sports Program.
“We have developed a reputation for sailing and hosting competitive events that is second to none,” Atkins said.
“It puts Sheboygan in the spotlight and provides good vibes for the community that we are hosting literally a world-
level sailing event. It’s a good image for the sailing community and a good image for the community as a whole. For
participants to meet people from other countries from around the world and compete literally at highest level of their
sport—that can only help and support the Olympic aspirations.”
Sheboygan was the host of the 2016 Women’s Match Racing World Championship and Blind Match Racing
World Championship and the 2017 Blind Fleet Racing World Championship.
The event website, www.paraworldsailing2018.com will be available mid-February with details about the event
and registration.
The Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan (SEAS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating af-
fordable pathways for the community to safely enjoy boating on Lake Michigan. Learn more at
