Festival Concert Series
This informal concert series provides all QES musicians with the opportunity to perform in a supportive environment in front of a small and friendly audience.
Each instrument or family of instruments is featured across the academic year and a wide range of music is performed. Beginners perform short pieces and have the opportunity to listen to those with more experience playing more complex music. Some of the concerts feature ensembles as well as soloists.

MusicHighlights Rural Touring Scheme presentsTim Kliphuis
A welcome return for Tim Kliphuis to QES. He combines Gypsy Jazz, Classical, Folk, World Music and Tango to create an inspired and daring fusion with soulful melodies, driving rhythms and funky chords.
As a young musician Tim cut his teeth in the fi ery Manouche bands playing Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli – but nowadays he is likelier to be heard duelling with Richard Galliano, Frankie Gavin or Charlie Mckerron. Tim has recently written a defi nitive book on Gypsy swing violin.
He is joined by James Birkets on guitar and Bruce Rollo on double bass.
Kliphuis plays with an astonishingly fl uid versatility, incorporating
funky slurs, whooping hoedown fl ourishes – Time Out
A charming, uplifting performance from a future great ... he has the
world at his feet – The Scotsman
Stéphane Grappelli’s style is alive and well in the hands of Tim Kliphuis
and the tasteful playing of his musicians – Nigel Kennedy

Kirkby Lonsdale Choral SocietyVivaldi’s Gloria andCarols from The Oxford Book of Carols
One of Vivialdi’s most stunning masterpieces, the Gloria is a work of rich contrasts and mood opposites - joyful/dark, playful/majestic, personal/universal-and is greatly loved for these almost theatrical qualities.
The Oxford Book is possibly the most famous and complete of all carol collections, greatly respected for being edited by Ralph Vaughan Williams and friends.

Special EventsThe Mysteries
The spirit of the original mystery plays was to tell the story of God in a fun, lively and contemporary way and this is what will be happening in St Mary’s Church in October with a very special production. Each performance will be in two halves – the fi rst half will be the beginning of the Old Testament (from Creation, then the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah and Abraham); the second half will tell the story of Jesus from his birth through to the resurrection. Be sure you don’t miss it – put the dates are in your diary. Watch out for details of tickets nearer the time (tickets will also be available on the door).
The aim is for it to be a community drama involving as many people as possible either acting or singing (or with production, publicity, moving pews … ). If you would like to be involved in any way, then please contact Richard Snow (015242 72044), or Nigel Bradshaw (015242 73722) for information.
The Kirkby Lonsdale Nativity Following the success of the event last year there will be an open air retelling of the Nativity Story in Kirkby Lonsdale on Saturday December 11th. The performance will start at Nazareth (the Market Square) at 3.30pm and then we follow the cast to Bethlehem. Just turn up and join in!
Like last year (below), there will be a cast of humans and animals (large and small). If you are interested in taking part please contact Richard Snow (015242 72044) before 1st Dec.

GrantsPaul Pfeuti Young Musician Trust
Paul Pfeuti was an inspirational and gifted musician. Paul took his fi rst teaching position in 1967 when he became music master at Douglas High School on the Isle of Man.
In the early 1980s Paul moved back to his native north west to Bentham Grammar School and after several unsuccessful attempts at retirement joined QES’s visiting music staff , teaching piano since 1996.
Paul died suddenly in the week after Christmas 2008. His family decided his legacy should befi t his lifelong passion and created the Paul Pfeuti Young Musician Trust to enable children to access music and further development of it where fi nances may not always permit.
Paul’s wife, daughter and the rest of his family remain closely involved with fundraising for the trust and deciding how funds are allocated.
The Trust have just awarded nine grants to local young people to help with the cost of exam fees and purchasing new instruments.

Felt making, including nuno feltLearn the ancient art of felt making. Jan will have her mix of hand-dyed wool and silk for you to make into a unique scarf or wrap. For the £5 materials cost Jan will supply some merino wool to start you off , but everything else will need to be purchased on the day. Please ring her about fabric for nuno felting if you would like to do this.

Christmas chandelier workshopAs this workshop is very popular Jan has decided to fi t another one in as they make lovely Christmas presents.
Wrapped wire jewelleryThis is also an age old technique…wire wrapping, again no soldering or gluing involved, we can use chunky wire for this technique and larger heavier beads. We will also continue with already learned techniques, developing and refi ning them. The wire wrapping technique allows you to make a bold chunky collar or cuff using large glass beads.
