Des mereDiThWelcome to Shortwood

Firstly I would like to say thanks to all that travelled and supported us last week at Paulton in the FA Trophy, it really helped the players not only to see you there, but to hear the encouragement given throughout the match which is very much appreciated!!It was a good solid and disciplined performance and very much looking for more of the same today and in the remaining period that will lead us up to the turn of the year !!Consistency in our game is what myself and Chris are very much looking for, because if we find that, then it will open everyone’s individual qualities more and in turn, will allow them to express themselves and then we can try to go to the next level which we know is there! On the injury front which I know we have had a lot of and a few of you have been asking about them. All I can say is that before the game Tuesday against Cinderford, we put the

‘injured ‘ players through a rigorous 40 mins and am pleased to say they all came through it ok. We also gave a lot of Development players the opportunity to play against a Southern League side to gain a bit more experience, and they acquitted themselves very well. These ‘injured’ players will be available for selection today or at the latest next weekend, which will mean we will be able to pick from everyone from within the club for the first time this season!!We have also added to the squad Joe Stokes, who comes to us from Slimbridge but because he has been cup tied in the FA Trophy and the league cup he hasn’t been able to feature until now and is a welcome addition.Again thanks for your continued support which is always appreciated by Chris, myself and the players

AFC ToTTon HisTory

Totton Football Club was formed in 1886 and became one of the founder members of the Hampshire F.A. when it was inaugurated, and was also one of the founder members of theNew Forest League, formed in 1904. After the 1914/18 War they entered the Southampton Senior League and the New Forest League, and in 1920/21 joined the Hampshire League West. The early matches were played at South Testwood Park before Totton moved to TestwoodPark, on 30th December 1933. In 1975 they amalgamated with Totton Athletic, installed floodlights and opened a Club Room and Bar at the ground.Totton’s most successful season was in 1981/82 when they won Hampshire League Division 1 for the first time, the Russell Côtes Cup, Hampshire Intermediate Cup, Southampton Senior Cup and Reg MathiesonTrophy and in 1983 reached the 5th round of the FA Vase losing 1-0 away to the cup holders Forest Green Rovers.Totton became one of the founder members of the Wessex League when it was formed in the 1986/87 season, finishing third. The Medisport Wessex League Cup was won in 1989/90 and rd the Club was runner-up to Southern League Bashley in the Russell Côtes Cup in 1990/91.The Carlsberg FA Vase provided the Club with a good run in 2001, reaching the 4th Round.Season 2002/03 saw the Club enjoy a good FA Cup run before losing to Slough Town in a 1st Qualifying Round replay. The Club did gain some silverware though, beating League Champions Eastleigh 2-1 in the final of the Jewson Wessex Football League Cup.2005/06 saw many changes in Team personnel and with Stuart Ritchie now at the helm, 4thplace was gained in the League, together with a fine run in the FA Cup and the winning of the Wessex League Cup for a third time.2006/07, proved to be the most memorable in the history of the Club. In the League the first Team had a season-long battle with Gosport, missing out on the title by one goal - a bitter disappointment after having led the table from October until the last week of the season, but the highlight of the season was the Final of the FA Carlsberg Vase at the new Wembley Stadium for the first time in the Club’s history, Sadly in front of a record 36,232 crowd for a Vase Final we had to settle for Runners-up spot after a thoroughly entertaining and skilful match against Truro City, losing 3-1.After the achievements of the previous season, 2007/2008 was always going to be a

challenge. A good early run in the FA Cup set the team up nicely for the season, and thatmomentum extended into a great run in the League. In what became a battle with any of five teams in with a chance, the team responded brilliantly, ultimately producing 27 points from 30 in March & April to seal our first ever Wessex League Championship, and promotion to the BGB Southern League. Certainly the past two seasons will linger long in the memories of those lucky enough to be part of the adventure, and a glowing tribute to a dedicated team and fantastic supporters. An exciting new adventure was about to begin!2008/09 saw AFC Totton reach new heights after being promoted to the Southern League South and West Division One. After a table topping start to the season we eventually finished 3rd in the league and after beating Beaconsfield SYCOB in the play off semi-final we ended up with a home tie for the final against Didcot Town. It was a superb match which went to extra time before Didcot scored the winner.2009/10 had seen AFC Totton lift the Hampshire Senior Cup after reaching the final for the first time in the Club’s history. This wrapped up yet another great season for the Stags as we narrowly missed out on promotion for the second season in a row, this time finishing runners up in the league and losing in the play off semi-final against Cirencester Town 2-3, after coming from 2 goals down to unfortunately concede a goal in the 90th minute.2010/11 was one of the most successful seasons in the clubs history, picking up not only the Hampshire Senior Cup for the second time but also retaining it from the 2009/10 season beating Sholing 3-1 at St. Marys Stadium. But this was eclipsed by the club being crowned Champions of the Southern League South and West Division, just pipping Sholing to the title by 2 points in a nail-biting finish to the season. The Club was named club of the season for the South and West division and also picked up the fair play award along with the Merit Cup for the most goals scored. The Club also celebrated a golden boot award for one of the crowd favourites Mike Gosney who scored 36 goals. The Club were also very pleased to see another crowd favourite doing well and penning his first pro contract to secure a deal with Port Vale. The highlight of the 2011/12 season was AFC Totton reaching the 2nd round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. The match, televised live on ITV was against Bristol Rovers our visitors coming out on top in convincing style. Nevertheless history was written and shall never be forgotten.

Shane Murphy (24). The stopper arrived from Dorchester Town this season having played every 2016/17 game for the Southern Premier outfit. A former AFC Bournemouth Keeper who spent time on a successful loan to divisional rivals Wimborne Town in 2015.Connor York (18). Signed permanently after impressing on loan from AFC Bournemouth last season. His 25 game stint for the stags earned him the 2016/17 Supporters Player of the Season vote. Tactically schooled in a number of positions, his energy and skill was utilised on the right hand side last season. Ian Oliver (32). Signed from Wimborne Town in December 2015. The experienced versatile defender who has had spells at Swindon, Eastleigh, Farnborough & Bashley prior to joining the Magpies. Pip Nolan - (24). Signed from the successful Cup winning side Team Solent this season, the former Salisbury and Follands Sports player will add a range of passing and technique to the midfield. Dave Allen - (33). Awarded the Captaincy last season Dave has converted admirably to a central defender from his days as a midfielder for the likes of Weymouth, Dorchester, Winchester City, Bashley and Lymington & New Milton. His knowledge and leadership have been crucial to this young squad who voted him their players players last season. Callum Chugg (19). Signed this season from AFC Fawley, Callum is a promising defender that enjoys the old school art of defending. Expect plenty of tackles, headers and clearances from the full blooded youngster. Curtis Young (18). Signed permanently this season from AFC Bournemouth after some impressive wing play during his 15 game loan stint helped secure the clubs Southern League status. Such was his impact Curtis was awarded the Young Player of the year award. Charlie Gunson (20). Former England Schools International Charlie signed from Andover Town midway through last season and quickly established himself as creative midfield force.

This was not the only history making event of the season - Stefan Brown made his mark in the record books by scoring the fastest FA Cup hat-trick by a substitute, scoring all 3 goals in 15 second half minutes, AFC Totton also reached the Hampshire Senior Cup final for the 3rd season in succession, losing out to 2-0 Eastleigh. The Club narrowly missed promotion to the Conference South, but lost 4-2 at Oxford City.in the play off final after only one season at Southern Premier League level. Season 2012/2013 saw AFC Totton consolidate their position in the Southern Premier League, their 14th position coming after a mixed bag of results, with home results disappointingly not matched by performances away from the Testwood Stadium. The Red Insure Cup saw an early exit at the hands of Sholing, but a better run in the Hants Senior Cup ended with the scores level at 90 minutes against a strong AFC Bournemouth side, with the Stags losing out 4-2 on penalties. Very worthy of mention is the tremendous effort of the Youth side who defeated AFC Bournemouth on their own patch, after an epic 11-10 penalty victory in FA Youth Cup. Unfortunately they were defeated in the next round of the competition but

the win at Bournemouth will remain in the memories of everyone who attended the match. In the FA Cup progress was made to the 4th Qualifying Round where the Stags lost a close encounter 3-2 at home to Cambridge City, but on the way they recorded a remarkable result, defeating then Conference South side Truro City by the same score in Cornwall. In the FA Trophy, Totton were rewarded by three home draws, beating Bideford, Gosport Borough, and Conference South Basingstoke Town before giving a fine performance at Blue Square Premier side Forest Green Rovers, only losing by a solitary goal in time added on.The 2013/14 season saw the Stags undergo major changes, caused by previous miss-management of the Club. Forced to field mainly inexperienced youngsters in the tough surroundings of the Southern Premier League, relegation was half expected, although as the players matured, performances improved, and the dreaded drop nearly avoided. The Club has spent the last few seasons at the wrong end of the table, so with new committee, management and player squad we are looking forward to improving for the 2017/18 season.

THE HISTORY OFSHORTWOOD UNITED

Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank.

The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions.

League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League.Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further

six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed.

The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood’s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood’s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3-0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0-0 till the 67th minute when

the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5-0 winners (AET).

Shortwood’s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy after a 1-0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final.

2011-12 season, however, was pivotal in the Club’s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final. Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad’s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history!

The 2012-13 season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a

magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position.

The 2013-14 season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out – but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears.

The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions.

2014-15 failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players

moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish.

2015 -16 continued Shortwood’s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20

seasons involvement with Shortwood – and the club movedforward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge. 2016-17 Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. Paul ‘Des’ Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season 2017-18.

AFC Totton 2 Shortwood United 0Shortwood equalled their best ever performance in the FA Trophy by beating Paulton Rovers on Saturday, and reaching the third qualifying round. Manager Paul Meredith said, “Today we were more solid from back to front. Everyone stuck to the plan and worked their socks off. With a little more care with our final ball we could have scored two or three more, but we fully deserved the win and I’m really happy for the boys!”Wood ceded the majority of the possession to the home side, preferring to sit in and use the pace of Jordan Morris in particular on the break. The first chance came the way of Paulton’s David Sims on four minutes, but his shot at the back post was saved by the feet of Burton in the Shortwood goal. Two minutes later, Harry Burns appeared to be pushed in the back by Hedges inside the penalty area, followed by a kick out at Burns by Hedges (although he did not connect with the Shortwood player). Despite the linesman flagging, the referee waved play on. Shortwood took the lead in the twenty-first minute; Ben Prictor crossed from the left, and a brilliant Sesay save stopped Taylor’s header, but the ball fell to Price at the back post, whose low cross-shot was bundled in by Liam Meredith. Ten minutes later, Shortwood doubled their lead; a throw-in was controlled by Liam Meredith in the Paulton box, and a one-two between Meredith and Burns allowed Freeman to make a late run, and, found by Meredith, he finished low into the net from close range. With under ten minutes of the half to play, Paulton scored a fantastic goal which must have given the home fans hope of a comeback in the second half. Jack Ball controlled a James Byrne pass with his chest before laying off to Monelle with the outside of his foot. Monelle struck it first time with his right foot from twenty yards and Burton could only watch as it flew high into the net.Paulton piled on the pressure throughout the

second half, but Shortwood came agonisingly close on three occasions when hitting Paulton on the break. A Monelle cross was met at the back-post by Hillard in the opening minute, but Hillard failed to connect properly amid claims of a penalty. Two minutes later, Ball headed just wide from Ford’s cross, before Hillard’s header from a corner rather fortunately (for Shortwood) fell at the feet of Burton. With just under twenty-five minutes to play, Jordan Morris was able to use his electric pace on the break for Shortwood, and, having run from halfway, his shot from the edge of the box skidded just past the post. Two minutes later, Taylor was released on the right, and his cross found Morris, but the winger’s volley was mis-hit and it bounced wide. With seventy-one minutes played, a deep Paulton cross was deflected up into the path of Burton, but he was unable to gather it under pressure from Ball. Somehow the ball failed to cross the line in the ensuing chaos, with a combination of Burton and Ryan Meredith blocking Ball’s desperate attempts to shuffle it over the line, before the ball went behind for a corner. Morris’ lob attempt on seventy-five minutes was straight at ‘keeper Sesay, after a ball into the channel by Aliu. With three minutes of normal time remaining, Freeman’s header found Liam Meredith, who’s shot on the bounce dropped inches wide of the post with Sesay in no man’s land. Sesay joined the attack for a free kick in the first minute of added time, but his header from Harvey’s dead ball went just wide. Will Hawes could have added a third in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but his left-footed shot from twenty yards flashed just wide.

AFC Totton 2 Shortwood United 0A largely Development-based Shortwood side were deservedly defeated at the hands of Cinderford in the second round of the BigFreeBet Challenge Cup.The first thirty minutes or so lacked any real cutting edge, as both teams struggled to create clear chances. Harry Burns was unlucky to see his twenty-yard shot crack against the bar seven minutes in, after he was found by Lomotey. Will Hawes shot wide after Cinderford ‘keeper Perry had only half-cleared a Prictor cross, before, two minutes later and ten minutes before half time, Cinderford took the lead; Shortwood gave the ball away in a dangerous area, allowing Norman to steal in and feed Atkinson, who cut inside onto his left foot and found the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Atkinson tested Burton in the Shortwood goal with a drive from outside the box in the forty-third minute, before Cinderford, from the resulting corner, doubled their lead. The ball in was only partially cleared, before Aliu appeared to foul Norman in the area, but play continued and McDonald smashed a low shot in on the turn.HT: 0-2Cinderford continued to create the majority of the chances in the second half, and Norman struck the post after he was played in by Knott five minutes into the half. Norman was again involved as this time he pulled a cross back to Angel, but he fired well over the bar from just outside the box.

Cinderford made it 0-3 in the sixty-second minute, with Norman finally getting on the scoresheet himself when he curled a free kick into the bottom corner from twenty yards. Shortwood were unable to threaten sufficiently in the final twenty minutes to make the game interesting, despite having scored through Will Hawes with around a quarter of the game to be played; he was found by Peyton, and, able to beat the Cinderford offside trap, chip over the onrushing Perry into the bottom corner. In fact, it was Cinderford who created the chances from then on-in, emphasising the fact that the Wood goal was very much against the run of play. Lander gave the ball away to Atkinson thirty yards from goal, but the striker could only shoot straight at Burton having got away from Noakes. Atkinson then found Angel at the far post, but Burton pulled off a good save low to his right.FT: 1-3
