Robert Frank Screening "This Film is About..." Sept. 10th, 8pm NSCAD Academy Building RM 208 “This Film is About …” was produced in 1973 by Robert Frank and a group of students during a summer film workshop at the Nova Scotia College of Artand Design.

The film is loosely organized around the narrative of a sexual assault, a criminal investigation and the subsequent trial of the perpetrator. FollowingFrank's cinematic style, the film includes scenes that openly reveal the film being made. In addition to the narrative segment, sequences of shortexperimental films made by the students are randomly cut into the film. This footage is ad hoc, strangely fascinating and at times disconcerting.

“ …, I like the film I did with the students in Halifax [This Film Is about …]. I certainly would have more feeling for it and maybe I will remember certainthings stronger that were done in that film, especially the Super 8 footage that the students did there. It had so much feeling. … The whole cooperationwith the students was really also a lesson for me on how difficult it is to cooperate between students and the teacher”.

Weathered by time, distinct characteristics shining through, hand-painted signs are a productof a fascinating 150 year-old history. What was once a common job has now become a highly specialized underground trade, a unique craft strugglingwith technological advances.

Sign Painters, directed by Faythe Levine & Sam Macon, stylistically explores this unacknowledged art form through anecdotal accounts from artistsacross the country, from the old guard to the up-and-comers. Sign Painters celebrates those keeping the tradition intact with a bespoke approach andappreciation for a balance between art and information.

in creating independent artworks;; that is, where the artist maintains complete control over the work.

production of works in new media or audio.
