Foreword

Welcome to Propelled, the 1999 Dance Graduation season . Tonight, you will see on stage some of Australia 's top dance students, performing on the eve of their professional careers.

In addition to their study this year, these dancers have performed at two international Festivals in 1999, touring to the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in South Africa (as part of Reaching the World, the 1999 Olympic Arts Festival) and the ?lh International Youth Dance Festival in Macau. The students received high acclaim for their performances in the media and from colleagues and patrons. This is one more example of QUT's participation and excellence in an international community and we are justly proud of the success of our students.

This year marks several important milestones for QUT and Dance within the Academy of the Arts .

QUT is celebrating 10 years as a university in 1999, but our roots go back to the beginnings of vocational technical education in Queensland from the mid 1800s. The different educational institutions that eventually became QUT evolved in Brisbane alongside and serving the needs of business, industry and government over 150 years. We have ennjoyed promoting the great contribution QUT has made to this society through its teaching and service over those 150 years.

In addition to this anniversary, QUT is celebrating 21 years of Dance. Established in 1978, Dance at QUT's Academy of the Arts quickly developed a reputation as Australia 's leading tertiary dance school and, as a result, graduating students have an envious employment record .

Past staff and students have been invited to be part of the celebrations over the four nights of Propelled and congratulations are extended to all those, past and present, who have played a part in creating this history.

Finally, congratulations to those students graduating this year. We wish them all the best for the future and hope that they will remain close to the University.

Choreographer's notes: In using Arvo Part's "Fratres" which is a piece in eight even sections, I have attempted to approach a similar movement vocabulary from different visual perspectives. Part uses chime like interludes to signal a new hour cleaning the space for a new layer to enrich what has come before. In "By Looking" I have concentrated on how we alter our perspective and focal point by giving a fresh point of view to the same situation or object. The predominant physical structure within the piece has been the use of a rotatiing wheel which gives the impression of an ever changing shape, viewing details which can become infinitely more microscopic and leaving the form alone to view the alluding energy it gives off.

horeographers notes: Interior is a work which looks at the issues of cultural displacement and loss of land and language through colonisation. It focuses on the emotion, struggle, drive and perseverance that is generated in the effort to maintain identity, language and sacred sites. This displacement has unfortunately been and continues to be, provoked by the colonists zeal to explore, survey and white peg, excavate, codify and thus subdue and "conquer" every inch of Australia . Perhaps one day we may witness the "hat of power" being transferred from the head of a colonist to the head an indigene.

tltoreographer's Notes: I took care to tailor the piece to the particular talents that make up the dancers of the Academy in 1999 and also provide a challenge for them. The last movement is a defile which is a form used in Europe but not in our country. It is a time when a company or theatre pays tribute to the artists who are of course the reason for us being in the theatre.

PAUL OLD Born in Mt lsa , Queensland 1964, Paul trained at the Australian Ballet School 1980-83. He has worked with the Australian Ballet, Australian Dance Theatre, Netherlands Dans Theater, Rambert Dance Company and for the last four years he has been working as a freelance dancer/choreographer in Britain. Paul started choreographing whilst in Rambert with his work Stilldance being toured extensively throughout Britain by the company. In 1995 he presented a program of his work in Adelaide. In 1996 he created Elective Affinities for a group of dancers from Prague National Ballet and in the same year participated in the International Choreographic Course ul}iir

the direction of Lloyd Newson. Since then he has been creating works on his own dan­whilst working as a dancer with Siobhan Davies Dance Company, Mark Baldwin Dance Company and Jeremy James and Dancers. He was commissioned by the Laban Centre to create a work, Stack, an 18 minute duet which was performed as part of the "Island to Island" program in the Brisbane Bloch Tertiary Dance Festival in 1998.

CSABA BUDAY A graduate of the Australian Ballet School, Csaba performed with the Australian Ballet, the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet and the Australian Ballet Dancers' Company before joining the Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) in 1984. During his 9 years with ADT he danced in numerous works by Australian and International choreographers including world acclaimed dance maker William Forsythe (Frankfurt Ballet) as well as choreographing four works for ADT and one for the State Opera of South Australia. In 1992 he was the only National choreographer chosen to represent Australia at the prestigious Susan Della! International Dance Competition , Tel Aviv, lsl.l.

Csaba joined Dance North in 1993 and choreographed five works during his time t including "Interior", commissioned for the company's 10th Anniversary season . In 1995 e returned to Adelaide to become a member of Leigh Warren and Dancers and also took up the position of Artist-in-Residence at the Centre for the Performing Arts (CPA). In 1996 he created his first full length work "CELSIUS-Caught in the wave" for the CPA's second year dance students. Later in that year he spent 3 months in residence with the National Institute for the Arts in Taipei , Taiwan and was company teacher for Cloud Gate Dance Theatre.

In 1997 Csaba, along with a colleague, formed his own project company Gender M Productions Inc which gave its first informal showing in that year. Other choreographic projects in 1999 have included "Beneath Zero", a new full length work for the CPA Adelaide, "Stella" a Dance/Theatre and music performance for the International Barrossa Music Festival and also another new commission for ADT. He is a 1999 Choreographic Fellowship recipient from the Choreographic Centre, Canberra. Csaba has performed, choreographed and had his works presented in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Israel, Vietnam, Scotland, England, Korea and Taiwan.

JOHN UTANS John has choreographed for and performed with various dance companies throughout Australia including the West Australian Ballet Company, the Australian Opera , the Australian Contemporary Dance Company, the Dancers Company of the Australian Ballet, Human Veins Dance Theatre , Australian Dance Theatre , Danceworks and Expressions Dance Company. As an independent performer/choreographer he has worked on performance projects with Don Asker, Lyndal Jones and Nanette Hassall. In 1998 John was a participating choreographer in the International Course for Professional

,a Choreographers and Composers held in Yorkshire, England. 91s currently lecturing at QUT and is completing a new performance work- "reading light"-which will be performed by some of Australia 's leading dancers later this month.

HAROLD COLLINS MBE Harold was one of the original dancers of the Queensland Ballet before joining The National Ballet of New Zealand where he was promoted to principal dancer in 1964. In 1968 he returned to the Queensland Ballet to dance Albrecht for Garth Welch 's produc­tion of Giselle.

He then travelled overseas to dance throughout England, Europe, United States and Japan working with some of the best compa­nies, teachers and choreographers including Sir Frederick Ashton, Rudi Can Dantzig, Sir Robert Helpman and Sir Kenneth McMillan. Harold also danced with the San Francisco Ballet and the London Festival Ballet. During this period, he performed a large number

of specially created roles and partnered many famous ballerinas including Dame Margot Fonteyn and Galina Samsova.

~74, Harold returned to Brisbane taking up an invitation to become principal dancer with ttie Queensland Ballet. He was appointed the company's artistic director in 1978 and remained in this position for 19 years, creating many successful and popular works. In 1989 Harold was awarded an MBE for his services to dance and the community. Since leaving the Queensland Ballet, Harold has continued to work as a freelance artist and recently has accepted a commission for a new work from The Houston Ballet II , USA.

In 1999, Harold has been choreographer-in-residence at QUT.
