LAS VEGAS—On Sunday, April 20, the Gold Coast Tour bus pulled out of Cal’s parking lot promptly at 10 a.m., how-ever, we could have left earlier if a couple of nameless bowlers had been there by the requested 9:30 a.m. check in time. Our driver, Mike, was the best yet and so was the condition of the bus. Thanks to Cal for letting us use their site for bus load-ing on Sunday and unloading. on Tuesday.

Several sessions of “Shut-Box” was enjoyed, prior to the Ontario Mills stop, to pick up Roberta McNaught and Doris Lewis (with yummy Krispy Creme donuts for all) and then Bingo sessions until we reached Vegas. Thanks again to Audry and Missy Thibdeaux for bring-ing the Bingo equipment and Roberta and Karen for conduct-ing the games.

We were greeted by Phyllis Baldwin, our Vegas sweeps di-rector. Also, Mary DeFord and her gang, in the Four Queens lobby at 3 p.m. (they drove, but took rooms with our group) .

After distributing room keys, everybody scattered to the game tables and slot ma-chines and on Monday at 11 a.m., Mike and the bus were curbside to transport bowlers to The Orleans and a super Dou-bles and Singles sweepstakes. Thirty-nine bowlers provided more than $1,500.00 and the prize fund featured pay-off to seven places in singles and 18 places in doubles. Also, Joan Roper and Bernice Ben-nett conducted lucrative high scratch and handicap sidepots

Jamie Vallie, Vi Wilson and Hedy Schoner were the big handicap winners this trip. Jamie topped the list with 219-650, followed by Vi Wilson 200-640. Hedy Schoner 639, Cyndie Martin 242-623, Marie Collier 615, Millie Harris 613 and Joan Roper, 611. The top seven scorers cashed many, many times with partners since the doubles event was round robin. We especially thank Phyllis, assisted by Roberta, for their quick work auditing sweeps winners who gathered in the conference room for payoff. Then back to the bus and return to the hotel for more gambling until the bus picked us up Tuesday at 2 p.m. for the trip home, including another stop at Barstow for another snack at McDonalds.

There was no juicy gossip this trip, but we can report Ber-nice Williams has great taste in sleep wear. I stopped at her room early Tuesday a.m. and when she opened the door I was stunned by her gorgeous shiny satin (or silk) colorful leopard spotted pajamas.

The 50th Las Vegas Sweep-stakes has ended and now we focus on the start of the 51st consecutive season. The league meeting is slated 10 a.m.Monday, July 21 in the Cal Bowl conference room. There’s no openings for franchises in the 16-team 675 foursome, but there may be some for indi-viduals. Since many subs will become regulars, we will need to replace them. If interested, call me at (562) 423-1567

Finally, thanks to Carol Mancini, Dean Lopez & Lillian Oak for the weekly Bowling News space, reporting our weekly league news, Super Sponsors, league membership, and most especially to Presi-dent Roberta McNaught for her personal support to me, on and off the lanes.

Qualify Saturday 12:00-1:00-2:30-4:00 &6:00PM (1 in 5 to semis) Semis 7:45 PM

ABTA LEAGUE RUNNER UP’S (L-R) Brandan Owens, Emma Johnson, Dave Mathisen & Louie Castillo.

Basto Wins 3rd ABTA Title at Linbrook (L-R) Kristy Kha (ABTA Member) Bill Swanson 4th, Hong Kha (runnerup ) $500, Champion Alan Basto $2,300, Nick Munoz Jr. 3rd and his sup-porter and wife Letrecia.

ANAHEIM—Alan Basto bowled the best as he won his third ABTA Title downing upstart Hong Kha in the title game. He took home a nice $2,200 top prize on home to El Monte. He really bowled darn well at Linbrook!

Our return to Linbrook was decent. In the early 3 Squad Event we had 158 entrants. Due to the decent turnout 46 bowlers advanced to the semis (High Scoring!!). It took a +94 for men and women a +3 to make the Semi-Finals. Leading the Semis was Hong Kha his great +201. He would sit out and be able to bowl the title game. Right behind was Bill Swanson at +162. Basto would sit out and bowl for the title. Swanson to receive a first round bye in the single elims and enter in round two. It took a +55 to make the top 16 Single elim finals spot.

The Bowlers took to the lanes, and in the first round single elims losing were LaSan-dra Chaney, Sun Sundara, Raz-mik Dalenian, Mike Bousquet, Anthony Christiasnason, Keith Anderson and Jason Chiu. They got checks of $100 in 10-16th places.

In round two being elimi-nated were Tony Morgan, E.

J.Rogers, Raquel Vergara and John Conway. They cashed in 6-9th places and $110 each.

Round three had Nick Mu-noz Jr. blitz Sophia Kim-Sy 232-177. Alan Basto bested Bill Swanson in a good one 245-227. So Bill and Sophia were 4th and 5th with fine bowling, and $120 with Basto and Munoz to meet for the right to bowl Kha for the title.

Basto again in a great match as Nick got tapped and Alan advanced to the title game in a 239-227 win with Nick in 3rd with great bowling. He could have been the winner but Alan was tough!. The title game was set and the horses were paid! Alan returned $30 in the horse bets for everyone who had him at $5.00 per entry.

The title now! Basto led off and was clean throught 3 frames. Hong then matched him and was clean through 5 frames but Basto doubled to take the lead. Hong then left the 2-8-10 and both opened in frame 7. Basto had a 22 pin lead but it was cut to 11 as Basto chopped the 3-6. Hong had a chance with a strike in frame 8 he left a 7 pin in the 9th and Basto sealed the win with a huge double in the 9-10 frames and won the title in a 191/222-

170/204 count. He is so well-deserving.

One of the nicest men I have ever met. Alan is soft spoken but his bowling ball spoke loudly at Linbrook. Congrats to a Great Guy. Great bowl-ing by Hong Khay, who could have won it. He is one of the good guys in the club and Nick Munoz Jr. who did so well. Dad Nick Sr. would have been proud if he were there. Great family here! Oliver finally got his first title.

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Greg Kokanor (men) +192, and Sophia Kim-Sy led the ladies +102. They both get paid entries.

John Whitaker was last standing in the 3-6-9 and missed on the first shot. The pot will go for $700 this Saturday at Premiere Lanes. John got $50 consolation for beer money.

The Match Game Matched at 199 by two of our finest supporters, Shawn Johnson, and Danny El Presidente Gue-varra. They both had left, so will be happy to come back with$1,750 apiece awaiting them. They are both deserv-ing! Our Carry-over is $555. We will expect a $2,000 est pot this week.

Match Series worth $920

was also Un-Matched and with carry over of $900, we estimate $1,300 Match Series this week, and for only $2.00 to enter.

Champion Alan Basto is from El Monte, and married to Pinky with a pretty daugh-ter Kaylea. He used a Storm Drilled by Memo at Bowlers Image. He thanks his buddies Ronnie, Rena , the Dragon, Hermie and Tres for support.

HongKha is from Long Beach and used an Avalanche drilled by Benny Mach at Westminster Lanes. He is single gals! He thanks his coach Stacy Rider at Linbrook,

National Deaf Bowing NewsLas Vegas’ Barrett Lee Hits 1st 300

LAS VEGAS—I got this news from Carl Malucci who was a former columnist for Las Vegas’ Ten Pin Alley. Malucci is a fine writer and I let him tell the story.

Barrett Lee of Las Vegas shot first career 300 game. He bowls a league at Red Rock Lanes in the Mountain Siders League. He shot his first career 300 game Wednesday April 16th and the first deaf to bowl a 300 game this year in Las Vegas. His games were 300-201-183 for 683 series for the night. Barrett has chosen to get a gold 300 ring. His wife Melchora Lee was present to see his perfecto.

Congratulations go out to Barrett Lee for his effortThanks, Carl for your write up story. We really need more

deaf writers to write deaf bowling happenings for this column. I quizzed Carl on how he won the Deaf Masters at Columbus, Ohio and here is what he told me.

MALUCCI BEATS PHELP IN GLDBA CAHEN MASTERS CLOSE MATCH

COLUMBUS—Carl Malucci became the first Californian deaf bowler to win the prestigious Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association’s Herman Cahen Masters last Friday April 18 at Co-lumbus, Ohio. Malucci said, he was the top seeded bowler for the championship finals and waited for the fine smooth two-handed Ohio bowler, Josh Phelp to come out of semi-finals to face him for the title.

Malucci described the final match as quite exciting and close as he pulled out a 236-225 win against the amazing Phelp. Phelp in a game earlier shot a 290 to advance in the finals.

Earlier in the morning Qualifying Round, Malucci said, he shot 750 series on games of 255-217-278 to place 2nd and worked his way into top seed with 446 and 505 two games total each (he had a 289 in my 505 series). Then he rolled a 230 in one game rolloff with 4 bowlers to be the top seed. He waited a while for Phelp to win his way into the finals.

Congratulations to the winner Malucci and runner-up Phelp for their fine bowling. In prior year Malucci was the runner up in this Masters to winner Kevin Moran of New York. Phelp is still young and will get his chance in future.

STOGRYN LED DEAF TRAVEL WITH 896 AT AMF BOWLING SQUARE

ARCADIA...So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League stopped at Brunswick Covina Bowl only to find that the center was closed to public with “Bowling with Stars” taking over the whole center for the day. So the league moved further west to AMF Bowling Square and started half hour late.

Darrell Stogryn came close to his 5th 900 when he finished with a 896 from games of 224-223-216-233. He was happy with it because he had a horrible bowling with his team in the USBC Championship at Albuquerque, New Mexico the previous week.

Darrell and his teammate Robert Audette were the only bowl-ers scoring 800s. Audette rolled 163-229-255-184 for his first 800 as he and Darrell helped their team to a 20-5 win over first place Riverside. Riverside fell to 2nd as Los Angeles got back to first with a 12 and half points tie against S. F. Valley.

Ed Abakumoff had 215/775 and Andy Lorenzo 221for Riv-erside, Bob Jones 220/755 for S F Valley and Los Angeles was helped by Paul Taffolla’s 726 and a pair of 702 by Gardy Rodgers and Francisco Navarro.

The league thanks AMF Bowling Square for accepting us on a short notice. Then it will have its final position round on May 4 at Keystone Lanes.

Kraye/Kraye and Sickles/Katsura Take Adult/JuniorCongratulations to Robert Sickles and Lesliann Katsura on their

win in the Handicap Division of the JAT Adult/Junior Tournament last Sunday. After staying out late at Prom the night before they stormed to the title defeating Joe Poole and DeeRonn Booker 257-183, 221-255, 249-227 for the title. It is Lesliann’s first JAT Farm title. In the Open Division, father-son superteam Scott Kraye and Brandon Kraye were hot all day and lit it up to win the Open Title 231-215, 258-235, 194-188. Brandon McGinnes and his sister “birthday girl” Alyse McGinnes came up just short finish-ing second. Scholarships for the juniors were $300 for Brandon Kraye, $200 for Lesliann Katsura, $150 for Alyse McGinnes and $100 for DeeRonn Booker.

Great Turnout For The Adult/JuniorThanks to everyone who came out for the tournament last

weekend. We had 108 bowlers on the lanes and some great bowling and some great bracket action. We really appreciate the support of the JAT! Congratulations to Otha on winning two prizes in the raffle and the Smiths for taking home a new Black Widow Pearl. Thanks to the hard work of Dino, we raised over $200 in the raffle which will go toward scholarships in the year-end events.

JAT TriviaJeff Spiesman accomplished an interesting feat at the Farm/

Open Doubles last event. Jeff has now won a Farm Club, Open Di-vision, Adult/Junior and Farm/Open Doubles title. We’ll see how our points-leader finishes out the season with our two Majors!

Clean 50 Must-Go Pot Someone will break the Clean-50 Pot that stands at $92 plus

the entries from Cal. Whoever gets the farthest clean will break the pot this Sunday. Just $2 for a chance at a big payday!

Our Next EventOur next event is this Sunday at Cal Bowl in Lakewood. Check

in at 8:30, bowl at 9:00. This is our last regular tournament of the season and last chance to qualify for the Invitational. Also, the top-8 bracket earnings leaders will bowl for the Bracket Challenge Jackpot this Sunday at Cal. If someone from the top-8 is not there the next-highest bowler will get into the rolloff. Regular Farm Club and Open Brackets also at Cal Bowl.

Check out the latest schedule updates, scores, highlights, photos and more at www.bowljat.org.

High Scores Galore in Linbrook 590 Classicby Joy McGregor

ANAHEIM—The heat begins. It’s technically still Spring but, Friday was pretty warm indicating Sunmer is “almost” here. The HOT sores inside Linbrook claim, “It’s already here”!

Mr. E.J. “easy-going lefty” Rogers showed us all just why he is “our leader”. Games of 259-243-’289’ (791)...oh-so-close...and 233 proved his worth and his highest 4-game set to date at an impressive 1,024. Just awsome bowling E.J.!!

Also, a MUST mention before listing the rest of the 900 Club-bers... E.J.’s team, consisting of two subs: Jenelle Jellsey and Kyle Osterman, gave us all such a thrill in the third game with two of them on a 300 quest. Kyle had a nice string going and both Jenelle and E.J. had the front 10. Jenelle ended her bid in the twelth leavng a stubborn 10-pin for a fantastic 299; E.J. got tapped in the 11th for a great 289 and Kyle ended his game with a clean 214. All-in-all, their team game tallied an awesome “802”. I do believe they should be in contention for the USBC high 3-person team game award. What a treat to watch such great bowling!!

Now, on to the 900 Club: Frank Bellinder, always on his game, shot 279-238-211 (728) and 224 for a great 952 series.

Jenelle Jellsey, certainly in her comfort zone, stroked 213-259-’299’ (771) and 174 for a fantastic 945 set.

John “Big-Bad” Conway, always in the spotlight, tossed 269-258-201 (728) and added a 203 to register 931.

Juan Sandoval, bowling oh-so-well as of late, rose to the occa-sion and fired 249-269-224 (739) and 191 to post 930.

Ronny “lefty” Thompson, no stranger to this Club, rounds out the 900’s on games of 242-247-199 and 218 to total 906.

More ‘sizzling’ scores: Ron Douglass 257-894, Dan Baker 243-893, Kantral Williams 254-892, Lloyd Thierry 254-883, John Velasquez 245-874, Willy Bordenave 235-872, Bob Gosnell 223-861, Tony Chaco 237-848, Kyle Osterman 224-848, Rey Ortiz 2346-847, Ron Mahler 236-846, Willly Harris 214-842, Eva Munson 217-838, Ed Harris 229-830, John Phillips 216-829, Alan Bloom 232-812, Janet Anderson 224-811, Tony Hale 214-800, Rob Roberts 234, Terry Brent 228, Diane Salinas 228, Adrian Bradley 227, Jack Wilson 225, David Wright 224, Stan Guzy 222, Rose Williams 218, Carrie Hay 217, Larry Green 213, Joy McGregor 213, Shig Shozi 210, Marie Barbush 209, Tony Angulo 209, Gloria Ferrulli 205, Don Hart 204, Al Lara 204, Helen Petrowski 203 and Carl Adinolfi 201.

Our thoughs and prayers are with Fred Voysey who suffered a heat attack earlier in the week. He is at Anaheim Memorial Hospital and we all wish him God Speed.

With only two weeks remaining until sweeps, there is a tight race to the finish line for the top 5 teams with only 6 and one half points between the top two. Good luck to all and if I were a bet-tin’ lass, which I am not, I’ll stay neutral and say, “May the ‘very bestest’ team win”!!

Just a reminder: The meeting to form the Rocky Marsh Doubles summer league will take place May 2nd immediately following the conclusion of the 590 Classic league session, approx. 11:30. For all those who don’t already bowl in the 590, please try to have at least one member of your team represented. We have 18 teams strong with only room for 2 more, so if you are interested, please contact Linbrook at 714/774-2253.

Good luck and “Hot” scores to all. Until next week...
