PASTOR’S LETTER Hope for People with Gender Dysphoria

In recent years, it seems like more people have been experiencing the painful reality that their subjec!ve percep!on of themselves doesn’t match their sex as indicated by their body. In other words,

some males “feel like” or “iden!fy as” females and some females “feel like” or “iden!fy as” males. The medical term for this condi!on is “gender dysphoria.”

Recently, the Va!can’s Congrega!on for Catholic Educa!on published a document called “Male and Female He Created Them.” It’s an examina!on of so-called “gender theory, which claims that a person’s gender is fluid, self-determined and not limited by biology. The document presents some common ground between Catholic thought and proponents of gender theory, for example the mutual desire to avoid unjust discrimina!on and welcoming “all legi!mate expressions of human personhood with respect.”

On the other hand, the writers point out some divergencies between Catholic thought and gender theory:

Gender theory (especially in its most radical forms) speaks of a gradual process of denaturalisa!on, that is a move away from nature and towards an absolute op!on for the decision of the feelings of the human subject. In this understanding of things, the view of both sexuality iden!ty and the family become subject to the same ‘liquidity’ and ‘fluidity’ that characterize other aspects of post-modern culture, o$en founded on nothing more than a confused concept of freedom in the realm of feelings and wants, or momentary desires provoked by emo!onal impulses and the will of the individual, as opposed to anything based on the truths of existence.

These “truths of existence” are reflected in the Chris!an understanding of the human person which are founded on God’s revela!on in Sacred Scripture:

The Holy Scripture reveals the wisdom of the Creator’s design, which “has assigned as a task to man his body, his masculinity and femininity; and that in masculinity and femininity he, in a way, assigned to him as a task his humanity, the dignity of the person, and also the clear sign of the interpersonal communion in which man fulfils himself through the authen!c gi$ of himself.”

Thus, human nature must be understood on the basis of the unity of body and soul…

In other words, God created each one of us human persons as male or female for a specific reason, related to our call to make of ourselves a gi$ to others. In the sacrament of marriage, this gi$ of self normally involves sexual union and the procrea!on of children, but even when it does not, and for people who are not married, the language of the body s!ll points to the gi$ of self in a life-giving way, in imita!on of God, in whose image we are made.

The best thing we can do for people with gender dysphoria is to lovingly and pa!ently encourage them to believe that God made their bodies a certain way for a reason, and to accept the way he made them as a “roadmap” to their mission in life as a human person, which includes their sexuality. Being male or female is not something we can make up or change—it’s wri'en by God into who we are. As Pope Benedict XVI put it, “man too has a nature that he must respect and that he cannot manipulate at will.” Surgery and hormone treatments can change some superficial aspects of our body, but not who we are deep down. For example, females have xx chromosomes and males have xy chromosomes. These determine not only how we look, but also how we perceive, think and relate to other people.

We should also do our best to help people with gender dysphoria understand that “gender” is not independent of “sex,” in the sense of being physically male or female. They go together, and any a'empt to separate them will lead not to greater happiness, but only to con!nuing confusion, frustra!on and heartache.

Through the Prophet Malachi, God said: “For you who fear my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings.” (Malachi 4:2) Jesus Christ is that Sun of Righteousness. May all of us—whether we experience gender dysphoria or not—receive that healing and move forward with Jesus in faith, truth and peace.

Yours in Christ, Father Rudolph

From the Center for Mission… Dear Fr. Rudolph, I am wri#ng to thank you, and the people of your Parish, for welcoming and suppor#ng the missionary group that came to your parish recently under the Missionary Coopera#on Plan of the Archdiocese of St. Paul ad Minneapolis. Each year we par#cipate in this face-to-face encounter with the efforts of one missionary organiza#on so that we might personally share in the story of the Good News of Christ being proclaimed in one part of the world. Your effort con#nues the tradi#on going back to St. Paul who gathered assistance for the Church in Jerusalem as an act of communion and encouragement within the Body of Christ. May our Missionary God con#nue to strengthen you in living out your own call to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. Amount raised $4,883.54 to The Center for Mission for the Missionary Coopera%on Plan.

Dear Parishioners,

This past January we provided a detailed financial picture of the parish and of the Faith and Legacy Founda!on. During the Archdiocesan bankruptcy proceedings all parishes were advised to not publish financial informa!on. Be assured we have an ac!ve finance council and accoun!ng firm that provide oversight and recommenda!ons to Fr. Rudolph.

The trend financially at St. Raphael and many other Catholic parishes in Minnesota has con!nued to decline over the last number of years. This is due to a combina!on of many factors, depending on the parish. For example, here at St. Raphael’s we seem to have more funerals than bap!sms and people joining the parish. This is related to the fact that each genera!on seems to have a smaller percentage of people who are ac!ve Catholics that the genera!on before them. At St. Raphael’s we have seen a number of young single people and families joining our parish, but—though many are very generous with their !me—for the most part they have less income to contribute to the parish than older people, especially if they have college debts to pay off, or have young children at home or in Catholic schools. Most of the parishes that are growing consist of predominantly immigrant communi!es, or else are in rapidly-growing suburbs at the edge of the Twin Ci!es.

If you are someone who pays a'en!on to the weekly contribu!ons you may have no!ced two things, the budget did not change during Fiscal Year End (FYE) 2018 or FYE 2019 and we rarely reached our budget number with our envelope collec!ons.

During this !me, we have managed the shor>all in income, just as you do in your own homes, by lowering expenses and in some cases with income outside of the Sunday collec!on. For example, when a staff posi!on became vacant, we try to avoid filling it, if possible. Some!mes several volunteers can help do what that staff person had been doing.

The current budget for FYE 2020 is a !ght one. We have worked very hard to find ways to save money. Possibly having a retreat onsite for the youth, rather than spending more money to go off campus for the retreat, as an example. Every department at the church and school have been involved in responding to your sacrificial stewardship and have in turn sacrificed in some way to be responsible with your generous financial contribu!ons.

You will see that the budget number is closer to our actual income than it has been for the past year. That is because we updated the budget. That being said, we con!nue to encourage you to make your financial gi$s to the parish inten!onally; think about the gi$s God has given to you, about how much this parish home means to you and your family. Pray that God will guide you as you discern how best to support our parish, in turn suppor!ng the very mission of the Church, which is to make Jesus Christ known and loved.

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED VICTORIA DIEZ Victoria Díez y Bustos de Molina was born on November 11, 1903 in Seville, Spain. She was the only child of a devout Catholic couple. They had enough money to pay for her educa!on and were coun!ng on her future salary to help support the family. Victoria followed her parents’ wishes in studying to become a teacher, even though she really wanted to be a missionary. She also a'ended art classes at the School of Arts and Cra$s in Seville. Her ar!s!c talent was matched by a deep spiritual life that sought an outlet in service. Consequently, she joined the “Teresian Associa!on,” which had been recently founded by Saint Pedro Poveda. It was devoted to the spiritual and pastoral forma!on of teachers. It also prepared them, as lay women, to teach in government schools; at that !me religion could be taught in them. (The Catholic schools were staffed by religious sisters, brothers and priests.) Victoria later wrote about the Associa!on to its director: “Since I came to know the ends it pursues I could only love it and I believe that only by belonging to it can I find happiness. How good God is to give according to our wishes!” She taught for two years in Seville while studying for her final examina!on, then was sent to teach in Cheles, a small town near the Portuguese border, which she described as “the end of the world.” Victoria worked there !relessly, trying to overcome the general apathy with regard to educa!on among the people. Her le'ers show her love for the students and her enthusiasm, but also some pessimism related to the size of the task facing her. A$er a year, she asked to work closer to Seville so she could help her parents. She was sent to the town of Hornachuelos, where she stayed for the rest of her life. Most of its inhabitants relied on casual agricultural work to earn a living. There was a lot of economic, ideological and religious unrest. Then, in 1933, a law was passed making it illegal to teach religion in government schools. In response, Victoria organized cateche!cal classes for her students’ mothers so that they could teach the faith to their children. A$er the Civil War broke out in 1936, a local commi'ee was formed in defense of the an!-Catholic government that was figh!ng a military uprising. Members of the commi'ee began arres!ng anyone they thought was in favor of the uprising. This included Catholic educators. At nigh>all on August 11th, Victoria was arrested and taken first to the town hall and then to a house which had been converted into a prison, from which she and seventeen others were marched overnight to an abandoned lead mine eight miles away. At daybreak the next day they were shot against a wall so that their bodies fell down the mine sha$. Victoria was the last to be shot. She encouraged the others with the prospect of eternal reward, and died saying, “Viva Christo Rey!”, that is, “Long live Christ the King!” Blessed Victoria Díez, pray for us!
