ESCAP brought together a private company in Japan (DENSO Japan), an organization of Thai disabled persons (Association of the Physically Disabled in Thailand), concerned government agencies and NGOs in Thailand to establish Thai Wheel, a wheelchair production workshop run by an association of disabled persons.

5 Bangkok pilot project on the promotion of non-handicapping environments

Since 1995 ESCAP supported Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) in implementing a pilot project in Bangkok on the promotion of non-handicapping environments, which was started in 1995. The outcome of Bangkok pilot project was the installation of kerb ramps and Braille blocks on many sidewalks in Bangkok.

6 Mushroom training for disabled people

FAO UN

Since 1999 FAO’s “Programme to Assist the Rural Disabled” started in 1997. In Thailand, a pilot project of mushroom training was launched in 1999 in Ubon Ratchathani in cooperation with the Department of Public Welfare and the Department’s Northeastern Vocational Rehabilitation Center. The trainees, selected with the support of the local Tambon Administration Office, learn mushroom cultivation, processing and marketing through on-the-job training. After the first phase of the project was completed at the end of 1999, one third of the 28 trainees were successfully running their own mushroom farms, while another half returned to

7 The Mobile TrainingTeam

1988 Training of teachers for the hearing impaired is provided with a particular emphasis on method improvement. This program included study visits to Japan and Korea and a workshop in Bangkok.

8 Workshop on Special Needs Education

1993 UNESCO held a workshop with Save the Children Fund (SCF), where translation of UNESCO’s manuals and texts were completed. As a follow up to this workshop, SCF promoted Integrated Education by initiating and supporting the ‘Huay Sak Cluster School Project’ in Chiang Rai.

9 Training workshop 1997 Using the UNESCO Teacher Education Resource Pack, a workshop was held in Chiang Rai organized by the Christian Foundation for the Blind in Thailand.
