3 QUESTIONS TO BRUNO FAMINPEUGEOT SPORT DIRECTOR1 /

« WE AIM TO WIN AGAIN »Six months after the amazing one-two-three on the 2017 Dakar Rally, how isTeam Peugeot Total facing up to the 2017 Silk Way Rally?

Team Peugeot Total is tackling the 2017 Silk Way Rally with all the concentration and humility that such a difficult challenge deserves. Even though experience gained previously is important, past success is never a guarantee of future results. We’ve continued to develop the cars to make them increasingly reliable, competitive and easy to work on. We’re undergoing a process of constant improvement, but if there’s one thing that we’re certain of before the 2017 Silk Way Rally starts, it’s that there will be plenty happening in every single area: from navigation to sporting matters to technical questions. While logic would suggest that we are the favourites, making any sort of prediction is more than risky on this type of rally.

What do you think of the format of the 2017 Silk Way Rally, in terms of the route and the difficulties ahead?

The 2017 Silk Way is going to be really tricky. It’s very long, with 15 days of competition and more than 10,000 kilometres to be covered, throughout extremely varied terrain and extreme climatic conditions, without forgetting some of the most complicated navigation of the year: in the absence of motorbikes, the cars are first onto the stages. The rally will also be very tough on the service crews, who will have to cover 8000 kilometres. Leaving aside the ironically-named ‘rest day’, the team will be on the move every day, with some very long road sections. As well as looking after the competing cars, it’s going to be essential to manage human resources as well.

What are your expectations for the Peugeot DKR Maxi on the 2017 Silk Way Rally ?

It’s going to be a real baptism of fire for the Peugeot DKR Maxi. The goal will obviously be to test it in extreme competitive conditions, in order to detect any issues that haven’t yet come to light during testing. Having said that, the ‘Maxi’ should feel particularly at home on the roads around the Kazakh steppes, and in the sand dunes of the Gobi Desert.

• BIVOUAC: camp where the rally competitors, teams and organizers live in between two stages. It’s a bounded area with secure access control.

• CHECKING CARD: official race document on which the competitors should collect all the mandatory stamps/checks, day by day.

• CLOSED PARK: bounded zone where no mechanic is allowed by anyone.

• CONTROL POINT (CH): place where the competitors need to be, at the appointment time given by the race direction. This place is located at the entrance or exit of the assistance park, at the stage departure and arrival.

• CONTROL ZONE (CP): during the stage and located on the track, the CP is the place where the competitors need to get the official stamp on their checking card; stamp/check made by the race commissioner.

• DZ: speed control zone, mentioned in the road-book.

• FZ: end of the speed control zone, mentioned in the road-book.

• STAGE: daily route for the competitors, including: one (or more) timed section(s) and liaison(s).

• MARATHON STAGE: no assistance crew allowed during the marathon day! After racing all day long, the competitors do the mechanic by themselves, and prepare their machine for the next day in total autonomy.

• LIAISON: untimed route section that brings the competitors from: the exit of the bivouac to the start of the stage of day; one timed section to another; the stage finish to the bivouac.

• STOP POINT: marks the end of the stage.

• PROLOGUE: small timed stage, raced one day prior to the rally start. The Prologue classification determines the rally 1st stage start order list.

• RALLY-RAID / OFF-ROAD: touring race with a big total mileage, way longer than the classic rally events.

• ROAD-BOOK: like a note book, the road-book describes the stage of the day. It is provided by the organizers after the competitors briefing, every

evening. It includes the information about the following stage - starting the day after. The road book presents the main characteristics of the stage route: drawing, schemes, notes, direction and mileage.

• SENTINEL: security system fixed on-board the racing vehicle. Through an alert ring, the Sentinel state that another competitor is in your perimeter, less than 300 meters far from you. This way the competitors are aware that someone may pass them soon and that they have to pay attention to it.

• « SPECIAL » (SS): stage timed section. The competitors enter the SS one by one, generally in the order of the previous stage classification.

• TRIPMASTER: indicate accurately the stage mileage. The tripmaster is one of the main tool/navigational system used by the co-driver.

• WAYPOINT (WP): GPS point characterized by latitude/longitude data. The Silk Way Rally has 5 different WP: WPV (WayPoint that you can see); WPM (Hidden Way Point, unseen); WPE (Eclipse Way Point); WPS (Security Way Point); WPC (Control Way Point). Those waypoint are mandatory places, where the competitors have to pass by during the race. The waypoint locations are not necessarily given to the competitors, this is why we talk about ‘’navigational challenges’’.

XI’ANA city with three thousand years history, a great capital of 13 dynasties – that is Xi’an, an ancient cradle of Chinese civilization, which hides the evidences of earliest human settlements and ruins of old villages. As a starting point of Great Silk Road, under Tang dynasty Xi’an reached the top of its power and became the largest city in the world. Today it is a developed megalopolis with more than seven million people, a multicultural center, one of the top three Chinese cities with the biggest number of universities.
